How to recover from Windows 10 black screen?

Whenever I try to open the lid of my Surface Book, I see Windows 10 black screen when trying to come out of sleep or standby. I cannot even see the mouse usually but sometimes I do. What should I do? – Sarah

This has been an issue with some Windows 10 laptops. It may manifest in slightly different forms like you may see the issue on a fresh boot, or when coming out of sleep. You may or may not see the mouse cursor. Microsoft has done lot of fixes so you should not see this problem as often but lets look at what you can do to get recover from Windows 10 black screen.

Option 1: Recover from Windows 10 black screen using power button

  1. Make sure power is plugged in.
  2. Press and release the power button quickly.
  3. Wait for few seconds.
  4. If you see a battery icon flashing on the screen, your battery is dead and you may need to wait 10-15 minutes before you can turn on the laptop again.
  5. If your device was fully charged and already powered on, wait for 10 seconds or so. You should now be able to recover from Windows 10 black screen. If this method doesn’t work, please try option 2.

Option 2: Recover from Windows 10 black screen with keyboard combination

  1. Press the key combination Ctrl + Shift + Win Windows logo + B.
  2. This will attempt to restart the graphics driver.
  3. Wait for 10-15 seconds to see if it resolves the issue.
  4. If it doesn’t attempt option 3.

Option 3: Recover from Windows 10 black screen with volume keys

  1. Press Vol Up + Vol Down simultaneously 3 times quickly within 2 seconds.
  2. This will attempt to restart the graphics driver.
  3. Wait for 10-15 seconds to see if it resolves the issue.
  4. If it doesn’t attempt option 4.

Option 4: Recover by forcing restart

  1. NOTE: This option could cause data loss especially if you have some unsaved data.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 5-10 seconds until the machine powers off.
  3. Tap the power button once to start it again.
  4. Wait 10-15 seconds to see if it resolves the issue.
