When booting my system, I get a blue screen with the following message:
"Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. System halted"
Using a boot disk I can access the hard drive, so that seems to be OK. The problem is loading Windows ME. From reading this and other boards I have tried the following (everything short of a system restore):
* Scandisk: found no errors
* Scanreg: found no errors
* Scanreg /fix: stated that "Windows successfully repaired registry" (even though scanreg stated I had no registry errors).
* Scanreg /restore: stated that no backup files were found - unable to complete.
The reason I am focusing on my registry is that the last thing performed on this computer was a registry defrag using a non-Windows vendor software program. I have also read that this could be a RAM issue, but I am not sure how to check that.
Any ideas I may be missing? How do I check my RAM if I can not boot into Windows? If I do a system restore, will it overwrite my drive? There are files there I really need to keep if possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!
