| Can't Update Windows | Configuration: |
I'm running ME on a Compaq 1800T laptop. Until recently, no problems. Then during an attempt to update one of the net utilities, after a prompt for an upgrade, my IE 6.0 started locking up. One error report was transmitted to Microsoft, and I got a response that a Win update would correct the problem. Any attempt to do a Win update also freezes the system. I tried reinstalling IE 6, forcing it to overwrite existing files, but part way through, that also froze. I downloaded Netscape 7.1, and that works fine, but still can't update windows, for it only works through IE, and every time, it goes to the routine to scan my computer for applicable updates, then freezes. I run Norton SystemWorks 2001, but it hasn't caused any problem up to now, so I've discounted it. Any ideas? I'm out...and highly frustrated.

Re: Can't Update Windows by leroi3 on April 16th, 2004 03:56:20 AM How much of Norton System Works do you run in the background? I only run the antivirus at all times and use the utilities as needed. You don't want a bunch of stuff running in the background while updating. Do you get any error messages? Exact error messages might yield some clues. How far along does the update get? There was a solution about a similar problem a while back, the solution was to move all files out of a certain folder to a backup location and then the update succeeded, sorry I don't remember which folder that was right now, but will try to find out.

Re: Can't Update Windows by shutte on April 16th, 2004 05:35:48 AM The update gets to the MS Update page and indicates that it is checking for the latest Win Update Software, but goes no further. No error messages; just system freeze. Any hints about the files being moved might just be the clue I need. Thanks for anything you have.

Re: Can't Update Windows by on April 16th, 2004 06:09:00 AM I can't find anything using the search function of this forum, probably my own ignorance. What I would try is to close IE, go to start>settings>control panel>internet options>general tab>settings>view objects and delete the "update class" activeX control and when you go back to Windows Update you should be prompted to install a new one.

Re: Can't Update Windows by shutte on April 16th, 2004 06:24:27 AM Alas, I did try your suggestion, and it didn't help. I'm apparently not getting far enough to trigger the installation of a new one. Reggie

Re: Can't Update Windows by on April 16th, 2004 06:58:03 AM You don't happen to have activeX set to "disable" in your security settings (security tab>custom level) of internet options do you?

Re: Can't Update Windows by on April 16th, 2004 07:06:42 AM Make sure you have javascript enabled too (same place as above). One more thing, if you have any script blockers installed such as Script Sentry, Scriptrap, HTAStop etc. you might try disabling them and try to update. Norton antivirus also has a script blocker built in (right click system tray icon>configure NAV>script blocking). Re-enable script blocking once your update is successful after rebooting. You haven't uninstalled Windows Scripting Host? |
Re: Can't Update Windows by Anonymous Ghost on September 13th, 2004 07:32:46 AM I am having the same problem, and also when i try to reinstall any microsoft programs, word etc, all freezes up |
Re: Can't Update Windows by Anonymous Ghost on October 15th, 2004 09:56:48 AM I had this same problem. I tried every fix on the net but nothing worked. I got it to work by copying the address from the frozen page and pasting it into the trusted sites in internet explorer. I also unchecked "require server verification (https)" |
