You want to save your .dbx files.. when you are ready to reinstall.. I have seen several ways but this has worked the best for me and has never failed.. .. in the “new” outlook express you want to import these folders and messages to.. do this..
Go into outlook express and create each of the folders that you want to bring back into OE.. make them the exact name as the folders that you want.. once that is done.. go into each individual folder.. it sort of activates it when you do this.. once you have opened each individual folder one at a time.. exit OE…
Then find the folders located at:
C:WINDOWSApplication DataIdentities{142CB1C0-874B-11D8-AA0D-E57273351F2A}MicrosoftOutlook Express

And once done. Delete the folders you just created.. in place of that. Copy the folders from wherever you saved them from.. Make sure they are spelled the same exact way you did when you created those folders in OE.. .. once you have copied the saved folders into the OE directory.. you can exit..
Once you go back into OE.. if you open the folders again. Your messages will all be in place..
Hope that helps..

Will be trying several thing to get myIE/OE to set as default mail handler. A switch that may enable it, then a registry trick to see if IE repair will fix the snafu, then if those still fail, I guess I'll have to remove OE and try the IE repair again.
Hope I don't end up needing to reinstall IE just to fix the prob, but it started when I first tried clicking Yes to making OE my default mail handler and got this:
"Simple Mapi Support could not be enabled because MAPISTUB.DLL could not be found in the system directory or failed to load. Reinstalling should restore this file."
Later after inserting a fresh mapistub.dll, I don't get the prompt to make OE my, etc., but still my IE Prop's program tab's page fails to show any e-mail handler, nor can I figure out how to get OE in that box.
It seems that OE's tools>Internet Options>'make default' is for making OE the defult, etc., but it won't stick as still no OE lists in the box.
Sooo- If no ideas, it looks like I'm going to be needing to backup my wab and dbx's, but seeing you post, it looks more complicated than simply doing a find files, copying each folder and relocating it to a safe spot until after I finish my fix effort(s).
If true, and I simply can't paste the copied folders into a potentially new set of them, do I/must I delete the new ones before pasting the backup ones in?

Sounds good. Sure would like to fix my OE. Doing all I can to do so, less reinstalling IE.
You mention changing the location of where the .dbx (and .wab) file(s)are 'maintained'.
Such location assures a replacement when a repair or reinstall replaces these files with a blank version right?
Obviously saving these files outside of OE offers a backup, but is there a way to take, say the .wabb from one OS and incorporate it rather than overwrite it?
I mean, one OS has xyz addresses and the other has a thu w, short of individually dropping these files into the other OS's OE .wab folder if that's even how it's done. Of course if doing so, one must remove the file/folder being pasted, right?
Just guessing, but import/export simply loads/stores new files and/or folders in OE, right, and overwrites the original, right?
Lastly, I tried the MSI tools>IE' Repair Tool to see if it would repair OE and found nothing changed, even the wab & dbx files remained unchanged.
Before that, I tried a switch to see if such would re-enable or repair OE's ability to set itself into IE as my default mail handler, and the switch wouldn't work as I sheepishly deleted the Windows Update Setup Files as it's readme said safe to delete these files after install, and the neeeded Mailnews.cab has yet to be restored by me.
Spent a lot of time flopppying them back from my other laptop, e-mailed the one's too large to floppy and two remaining one's zipped at 1.89 MB, etc, can't be e-mailed as the server reports too large!
I thought 10 to 16MB e-mails were standard limitations, right? Guess not. That, or I've got issues with my other laptop's OE.
Anyway, there's another trick I can try guess if after I complete restoring the setup files. It's the registry one where we' enter the 0 (zero) value in place of the "1". Ref. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftActive SetupInstalled Components{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection.
Possible causes for this include server problems,
network problems, or a long period of inactivity.

I tried to change the format of my OE. I clicked on VIEW, then clicked on "Layout" upon which I ticked the various boxes that I wanted for my OE page. I clicked "apply" then clicked "OK". The page looked exactly as I wanted however when I exited the program and re-opened it, the new format did not remain but reverted back to the original. Any idea how I can keep the view I desire even after clicking Apply and OK? Thank you

Long ago, I created a password in outlook express but cannot remember it now. This was not a problem until I created a second email address, now when I try to switch identities, outlook asks for me password, which I cannot remember or guess! Can you help me?
