| D drive gone or still there? | Configuration: |
It's a long story but I try to make it as short as possible. I installed Mandrake linux 10.0 on my box with Win XP in it already. Well, after this XP didn't boot anymore. I was still able to reach my Windows data from Linux, though. After several tries to repair my XP installation or reinstalling XP I gave up, deleted the NTSF partition of XP (my C drive) during Mandrake's installation procedure but left the FAT32 D partition on the same drive intact. After that I installed Win98SE without any bigger problems, although there seemed to be something strange going on with fdisk recognising disk space in a weird way. I thought that was because of the Linux partitions (which fdisk doesn't recognise anyway), but now that I have Win98SE up and running Partition Magic 8 does not recognise any Linux partitions - guess none were created because I quit the Mandrake installation process before completing it. And here's the actual problem: my D drive, which was supposed to survive the whole mess untouched, doesn't work. It shows up in Explorer (along with drive E, which is my other hard disk), but when I click it I get the notorious message which says "D: not acessible. A device attached to the system is not functioning." Partition Magic only sees the new FAT32 C drive, and says there are two unallocated partitions, of which one is logical (go figure) and one extended partition. The logical unallocated partition and the extended partition are of the same size. Also, I have a mysterious F drive (a hard disk) appearing in Explorer. This shouldn't be there, F should be my first CD-ROM drive. The same error message comes up with this one, too. Could it be that I messed something up with the extended partitions and logical DOS drives when I created the current C drive? And is it possible to recover the data, if I can't make the D drive to work? All my and my fiance's work data were backed up there, not to mention four years worth of email...

Re: D drive gone or still there? by othehi on April 12th, 2004 09:47:46 AM I just saw a thread here on this same subject last week I think it was. Do a search here. In the meantime I will pass on what I can. Seems as though Windows and Linux use different parameters to create and utilize disk space. You have a condition where the two prtitions are actually overlapping each other. You need to leave empty space between these partitions when you create them. If no one else comes along here, I would suggest you post in the Linux forum for further info on this issue.

Re: D drive gone or still there? by montec on April 12th, 2004 03:51:41 PM OK, thanks. I tried to search for the message you mentioned, but couldn't find it. Anyhoo, it seems that DOS, somewhat miraculously, recognises the D drive and its contents without a problem. In Windows the situation is the same. However, moving the files on D to another drive through DOS is an excruciating process - I think I'll try to re-install Mandrake and see if it recognises the D partition. I could make the move there much faster.

Re: D drive gone or still there? by montec on April 12th, 2004 08:01:26 PM mosaddique: thanks! I downloaded Ranish Partition Manager and got some further info on the situation of the troubled D partition. This is what I get: "VFAT Extended LBA" "Problems with partition: Invalid layout of extended partition chain. Boot sector doesn't have valid information." If I just could get all the important stuff out from that partition I'd just delete it. But I only manage to 'get inside' by booting DOS from Win 98's boot disk. saksham: I had XP installed, but that doesn't matter now. I now have Win98SE up and running.

Re: D drive gone or still there? by montec on April 13th, 2004 01:04:09 AM Thanks again mosaddique! I'll try with GetDataBack, it looks quite promising. I'll create the disk2.txt file if GDB fails.
