dos window, dos modeConfiguration:
I'm so rusty with dos!
1) I thought I used to be able to type "help" at the prompt and get a screen full of info or type for example "help dir" to get help with the switches and other info.
When I try these now I get a bad command error.
2) Also, from Start > Programs> ms dos prompt icon, my system goes into dos mode, shutting everything down first, and then restarting windows on exit. I cannot find my way back to the windows properties dialogue for dos mode so I can change back to "detect" when required or is it "shell"?
thanks for any help,
Audrey

'Help' was a pre-windows dos command. I don't think you'll find it in 9x.
You need to recreate your ms-dos prompt.pif file. I don't recall how to do it so I'll just email you a copy of mine.

Well I was fiddling around and for future reference all you need to do is create a shortcut to c:windowscommand.com and rename it MS-DOS Prompt and then copy it to c:windowsstart menuprograms. Be sure to rename or delete the old file first.

You posted an invalid email address but I guess you can create the file yourself as I explained above.

The "help" program may not be available, but you can get help from just about any DOS command by typing "/?" after the command. Try typing "dir/?" at a DOS prompt and see what happens. This can be in a DOS window, too.

Wow - thanks everyone!
I don't remember how or why I changed things in the first place - best to leave
these things alone sometimes....

Following on from Dan's suggestion, if you copy the two files (help.com & help.hlp) into c:windowscommand then when you shut down to DOS it will work just like the old days "help + command" (and you can still use /? as well).
You might get the odd spurious letter if you run it from a DOS Window but it was never inteded to run that way.
This saves cluttering up autoexec or making shortcuts.

I have an IBM Laptop that boots into dos and I would like it to boot directly into win 95.
