CD-ROM driver not present when bootConfiguration:
i cleaned off my computer to start from scratch, and when i tried to install everything back on my comp doesnt recognize a CD-ROM device driver. So i headed to driverguide.com and picked up and universal driver and put that on my C: with no avail. i copied the mscdex.exe file from a friends house still with no luck. checked out the manufacturer's site(optorite) and they claim there is no need for any drivers however have found other people have had similar problems.
so i'm wondering what else i can do, i've tried about everything i can think of. made sure i set everything properly in the BIOS, checked to make sure everything is plugged in properly.
any help is GREATLY appreciated

If you use a win98 startup floppy to do the install it will have the driver.
If you do not have a win98 startup floppy go to www.bootdisk.com and download a file that will create a bootable floppy with cdrom support.

Hi Brad,
here is a proper way to check your CDROM . First boot up your PC, then go to CMOS by interrupting it with the DELETE BUTTON. Check if the name of your CDROM is there or
not. IF it is not there , then there must be something wrong with your CDROM.
You can check the jumper setting of your CDROM .See whether it is in MASTER or SLAVE mode. try doing that b4 installing any software.

With many machines, to boot into BIOS you use Delete key, but by no means all. My new motherboard uses the F2 key and others can use practically anything (usually an F key though).
Similarly, to get to "Safe Mode" most folks hold down the Ctrl key which is great. But it doesn't work for all machines. Tapping F8 will get you there on virutually any machine.
There is some danger in making global assumptions about computers based on what happens to work on your own particular machine.
