deleting win98Configuration:
I've recently installed win2000, was win98SE. I believe win2000 drops itself into a folder called 'WINNT'? I still show a folder called 'WINDOWS' which I think would be for win98? Can I delete the 'WINDOWS' folder?

Try renaming the folder to something like "Win2dows". Then restart your PC. If Windows 2000 complains about missing files, you know that it still needs the old WINDOWS folder.
If you need to de-rename the folder because it is still needed boot into Command Prompt or the Recovery Console.

That's a bit drastic! Start a command prompt from Program Files or enter CMD in the Run box. In the window, enter SET - you'll get a long list of stuff, somewhere in the towards the end will be "SystemRoot=", which tells you the Windows folder you've installed W2000 into. It'll probably be C:WINNT - if so, you can safely delete the WINDOWS folder. The W2000 install would have shown which folder it was going to use during that process.

But what if randy75 still has some programs that refer to DLL files in the WINDOWS folder?

They won't be able to find them because they won't be looking in W98 registry, but XP's registry. He'd have to reinstall them under XP.

I meant W2000's registry, of course.

I've had to delete a Windows folder in similar circumstances in the past, and even KNOWING that there's no reason it might cause any grief, still paused with my finger on the mouse button.....
