still xp with 2000Configuration:
Hi, I'm still not able to get this thing working.
Is there somebody who is more expierenced with this.. I've set up a network between xp and 2000, but I can't access the XP machine. I can access shared folders on the 2000-pc but not from 2000 to XP.
I am on the same subnet, both pc's have different ip's. I can ping the 2000 machine(on xp), but not the XP(on 2000).
whatt can be wrong? I disabled firewall's on both computers..Only thing running is norton antivirus on both computers. Even with switching that of nothing..Am i that stupid or what :)
I have client/servie installed with an TCP/IP protocol on both machines. Both machines share some folders.
Operating System : xp & 2000
CPU/Processor : amd/intel 320mb/128mb
RAM : amd/intel 320mb/128mb

Possibly - and it's a long shot...
Is the NIC in the XP box in the pci slot immediately adjacent (next) to the agp slot - and presumably the agp slot it in use...?
If so then that may be the problem?
These two slots share the same irq and a NIC so positioned will not work properly (if at all) when sharing the irq with the (active) agp slot. Have at least one slot between the NIC and the agp card/slot.

Another l-o-n-g shot - although it shouldn't be necessary on this occasion (only XP/W2K involved on this LAN) - enable netbios over tcp/ip on XP system (and perhaps the W2K too).
A site that may have some input for you is:
http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com
You navigate to "chapter of the week downloads" (left column) then scroll down to bottom of screen and go to previous downloads... i.e.:
http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/whitepapersByCategory/0,293837,sid1_tax294137_idx0_off10,00.html
There is wealth of info here for W2K3, W2K, XP; and on the earlier pages (4-6) there are several chapter downloads pertaining to XP problems - some specific (or at least in part) to XP networking.
e.g.
(current page -4):
Chapter of the Week: Windows XP Professional: A Beginner's Guide -- Chapter 8, 'Setting up and using a network'
Chapter of the Week: Windows XP Killer Tips -- Chapter 12, 'Doh!'
(current page-5):
Windows XP headaches: How to fix common (and not so common) problems in a hurry -- appendix
It's worth having browse/read of all XP downloads?
You have to register for access to the downloads (it's free). As best I can tell 'they' do not pass-on email details etc.; nor do they spam you...
Also it might not hurt to go thru' the whole LAN arrangement you have using Jo Helmig's info as a guide at: wown.com; similarly the info at practicallynetworked.com?

Its not possible to connect a W2000 pc via a switch to a XP pc, I tried all the solutions on the internet nothing works :(

1. same pw and Usern on both pc [NOT}
2. Fumbling about in the networksettings on both pc's [NOT}

Reason I think: Becouse W2000 is for the bussiness market Bill G never bothered to write the right software for both OS to operate. W98SE works just fine.
