| CPU 100% svchost, MS BLAST? | Configuration: |
Recenty I've noticed my computer will not cut/paste properly, and got lots of errors. Yesturday, while downloading Windows Media Player 7.1 I was dissconected from the internet(I'm using an external modem). I tried to reconnect but it just said 'unable to establish a connection' over and over. I also noticed that at this point, there were two svchost.exe programs running, one was moving from 0-2% CPU, the other was moving from 60-100% CPU. After running a virus scan (I use McAfee) I found that I had the MSBLAST.exe worm, so I chose to remove it. Now, there are still two svchost.exe programs running, one which is at 2% CPU and the other which is at 0% CPU, however the 'system idle process' is constantly moving from 2-100% CPU even when no programs are up. Also, I am still unable to connect to the internet, even after re-moving and reinstalling my modem. Any suggestions?

Re: CPU 100% svchost, MS BLAST? by ultrax on April 13th, 2004 01:02:47 PM Try to download the "Removal Tool" for W32.Blaster virus and fix this problem. After this, download the patch that corresponds the needs for total removement of this virus (you'll find it if u search in Microsoft for Vulnerability Blaster patch). Oh, download also "Spybot Search & Destroy utility and Stinger from www.nai.com and run them both. After those steps I think you will be 100% clean and smooooth... I'm waiting to tell me what happened...Alert me. P.S. svchost.exe is a system application that windows runs multiple times. You can have 5, 6 or even 7 svchost.exe running in your task manager view...it's not a virus. If Blaster could be seen in Task Manager it should be written as msblast.exe or something like that...Also, Blaster virus popups a Shutdown window that counters reverse, seconds before the system is down...hope i helped a bit.. Re: CPU 100% svchost, MS BLAST? by inazum on April 13th, 2004 07:52:30 PM Alright I have already downloaded and run Stinger.exe, and it found and removed MS Blast.exe, mslaugh.exe and Nadachi.exe. I tried to dowload the patch (using a windows 98 machine) and transferred it to my windows 2000, however the install window vanishes after 1-2 seconds and will not install properly. I also ran the Spybot removal program, but it came up blank. I am still unable to connect to the internet using my windows 2000 machine. What now?

Re: CPU 100% svchost, MS BLAST? by Anonymous Ghost on October 27th, 2004 07:31:42 AM I have found that I appear to have the blaster worm in that I am given a message to say that the computer will shut down in 50 secs. I have also discovered that when I send e-mails to people, they get a warning to indicate that my SVSHOST.EXE contains a virus. I have run the McAfee Internet suite, but it doesn't show it being present. I have also run Stinger, Shredder and AVG - all are negative. Please can you help me?? |

Re: CPU 100% svchost, MS BLAST? by Anonymous Ghost on November 21st, 2004 11:26:24 AM OK Folks. Heres how you do it (At least for win 2000 Pro)
STEP #1. Download the latest version of mcafee stinger at http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe
and scan you whole system or at least your windows folder(s) for viruses/worms. While youre at it, you might want to think about getting a
R E A L ANTIVIRUS like
NOD32 at "http://www.nod32.com/"
OR SOPHOS at "http://www.sophos.com/"
If you had one of these, you might not have had to come searching here, frustrated in the first place. :P . Get Torrentopia from http://www.torrentopia.com/ . Serch for Sophos. Dld nod32 from the website.
STEP #2. If you do find a virus/worm, you might need to follow the steps given by stinger, that is the patches to undo the damage done by the worm (Mainly MS BLAST).
----------------------------------------
For those who didnt find a virus/worm and/or whose problems persist, go to step #3.
STEP #3.
*** You Need To Login As Admin***
Win XP Users... Run Msconfig from the run dialog and disable DNS Client from the services tab.
Win 2000 Users...
Disable DNS Client from
START >> Programs >> Administrator >> Services.
TIP: You might want to dld MSCONFIG.EXE for win 2000. Its the winXP version but it works just fine. http://www.techadvice.cc/files/s29k2/win-xp/msconfig.exe
Alternatively, copy it from a win xp installation "windows/system32/" from a friend.
----------------------------------------
Grateful to Damir ^^(previous post)^^ for the tip, and getting me on the right track with my svchost problem!

Re: CPU 100% svchost, MS BLAST? by Anonymous Ghost on February 07th, 2005 04:37:28 PM -I had all of this, machine fine off line but after connect one of the 2 svchosts would run at 99 to 100 percent. Norton 2004 with all updates found the machine clean , registery cleaner also reported all ok , stnger found a few item that norton didnīt but nothing sorted the probem. So i dd a format and reinstalled win2000 with bare bones. on connecting to microsoft to get the updates the probelm came back after 30 sec connected. I installed EZ Firewall and all fixed. no more problems, cpu back to normal, thank god, my own fault really i relied on norton to much when i needed a firewall... |
