| Why are these partions so slow? | Configuration: |
I've got 2 80gb HDs partiioned up w/ a few running NTFS and a few running FAT32. The FAT32s and the C drive (small NTFS) are fast enough but when I try and access the 2 larger NTFS partitions (~32gb) I get an hourglass for 3-4 minutes (I've timed it). It's particularly bad in Windows Explorer if I expand the '+' next to the partition. After the delay it's fast and responsive thru the session. But if I kill Win Explorer and later start it again ... It's another 4 minute wait for those 2 larger NTFS partitions to start responding. What's going on here and what if anything can I do to tune or tweak or otherwise get my larger 32gb NTFS partitions to come out of their stupor a little quicker???

Re: Why are these partions so slow? by pgtr03 on April 15th, 2004 10:33:06 AM I tried defragging and that really didnt' affect anything - I didn't time it carefully but it might have shaved a minute off teh 'wake up' time... Any other suggestions? thanks,

Re: Why are these partions so slow? by wander on April 16th, 2004 04:20:49 AM Does your mainboard have a ide driver for your mainboard? You would find this on the mainboard cd. Another issue could be that your mb controller is older and is having a hard time talking to the newer ATA drives. I had a celeron system that I put a IBM ata133 drive in and had to use the ibm utilities to step the drive down to ata33 for it to work right.
