Your motherboard manufacturer website is the first place to look. They should also have a link to the award update program you will need.
Failing that, just type your motherboard make and the words bios update into google...but check the reputability of the site you get any file from.

If the bios won't recognize a 40 gig drive chance are it's too far outdated to be upgraded to that level. Most aftermarket hard drives come with a driver that can be installed in the boot sectors that will allow computers with oudated bios to recognize larger drives.

If only it were that simple. The BIOS update you ask for must be written expressly for that particular MBoard. This "support" is usually only done during what is considered the product life. In your case a BIOS update probably wouldn't solve the issue. The chipset needs to support parameters that aren't available on your MB. You have three choices. One: use the drive overlay, Two: buy a controller card that will allow you to use that drive without the overlay and at full transfer speed. Three: Get a newer MB and other hardware to go along with it. Drive overlays have a way to come back to haunt you. When you eventually migrate that HD to another computer you will have trouble accessing it.
