Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on August 31st, 2004 04:51:13 PM *Name is Denis* well I recently fixed that 1-min shut down by downloading that MSBlaster Patch from windows patches.
NOW i have the same problem as you guys which it relates to "Generic Host Process" and it has to "close" even though it is blatantly Inconvenient.
i would appreicate any help.
I am currently trying to see if deleting the Spyware/adware might fix this problem... again any advice will be appreciated |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on September 15th, 2004 01:26:59 PM Me to guys...came on here to see what the deal was. I reformatted my box...all went smoothly...then while installing my video card drivers I got that same message. Some of my drivers installed right...something however is nasty wrong inside it's little case. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on September 15th, 2004 10:48:02 PM I have been getting this error message when I sign onto AOL. I generally have to reboot, but if I can stay online for a bit, my task bar turns from blue to beige, then I know I need to reboot. Anyone know what can be causing this? |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on October 01st, 2004 05:14:01 AM Not sure I have a solution, but perhaps a clue...
I have a new XP install on a new machine. All worked fine out of the box. I patched it with SP2 and my problem started immediately (slugish performance when first connectining on-line via dialup, taskbar locks up, and clicks get queued up till "whatever it is" finishes, then all happen in a rush etc.)
Against windows advise, I disabled XP firewall, and installed an older version of Zone Alarm (I don't like the auto check for update feature in the newer one).
On first access to the net after, Zone Alarm asked for generic host process to access net, and then to act as server, but stated that it was trying to communicate with Micro$oft. I allowed it to connect, but not to act as server. Zone Alarm bounced several connection attempts from Microsoft machines, then everything went back to working as normal.
What has redmond snuck into SP2? |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on October 03rd, 2004 10:06:44 AM I have the same stupid error, just not while surfing the net with my pc, but when I want to connect my notebook to the internet via my desktop. It started with me after SP2 installation also. I am really considering format c: again. Will try the zonealarm tip first though. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on October 03rd, 2004 09:51:31 PM I am reciving the same message. It started after I installed SP2. I attempted to uninstall SP2 and that didn't help. I did use system restore and went baack to a time before I installed SP2 and it resolved the problem. I let SP2 reinstall and it is back again. Microsoft hasn't posted anything about it yet. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on October 04th, 2004 11:19:23 AM Im getting it to. Clicks queing up, pauses, etc, then the generic host error. After a recent virus scare I have repeatedly cleaned my harddrive and also installed SP2... |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on October 05th, 2004 08:39:19 AM Sine I've denied generic host process server rights, I haven't had a problem... Don't know what it is supposed to be be doing that it isn't, but I can access the net without any hassels, and have had no error messages... |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on October 05th, 2004 10:22:23 AM This problem can be solved by uninstalling XP SP2 and re-installing it as a user who has full administrator privileges. Also, make certain that all programs including Anti-Viruses are shutdown before installing SP2. The Generic Host Process Win32 problem is caused by files that were unable to be overwritten due to file open activity. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by mrcool011 on October 06th, 2004 03:27:53 PM i just started getting the same message about the generic host thing. i got windows xp and sprint dsl. but every time i sign online that message pops up and if i dont click the "dont send" button the internet works for a few minutes longer but still stops working after that. i did alot of viruse scans on the comp like housecall scan, and avast and spybot s&d and adware adn removed a sasser.a worm and had enough time to download the patch but it still doesnt work. now another thing. when i sign online it wont let me play videos or music. butif i restart my comp and dont sign online it lets me play them.i have no clue how to fix this. andi never got the sp2. i dont know hardly anything about computers so what is this system restore thing and how do i use it? |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on October 07th, 2004 05:00:05 PM I too am getting this error. I've looked everywhere. It started for me after I installed WinXP SP2.
I found this on Microsoft's web site. I think I'm going to rebuild to get rid of this ridiculous SP2. It is truly a POS.

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on October 10th, 2004 08:24:46 PM Ditto, I'll be working online and it'll pop up, then when I click "Don't Send" or "Send Error report" my Aol Instant Messenger dies, and so do my Internet Explorers, it's as if I'm offline, but it shows I still am in the side task bar (two little computer windows with blue/black screens) So I double click those to see, and it won't open, it won't even let me shut down, I have to either unplug the computer or shut it down.. which is pretty bad for the computer... I need help! (Also I have no idea what ZoneAlarm or whatever is, never downloaded it...) |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on November 03rd, 2004 10:59:14 AM Solution for me - but don't know why it seems to have worked.
Had similar problems with GHP error messages when connected to internet. Couldn't figure out how to fix - tried reformatting hard drive, reloading operating system (Win2K Pro) and all other programs several times to start with "fresh" system. Problem returned every time I surfed internet, (never any other time).
Since only happened when surfing internet, I suspected the problem may be with Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser. I used both IE 5.5 & IE 6, had same problem with each of them.
SOLUTION
I downloaded and made a copy of the Mozilla FireFox browser and Thunderbird email program; then installed and used them exclusively after reformatting, etc. again. RESULT - NOT ONE ERROR MESSAGE!!! Not a single problem at all and it's been three weeks now since I did that.
I have absolutely no idea why this seems to have worked, but it did for me. So, you may want to try downloading FireFox, use it for a while and see if error messages disappear.
Hope this may help. |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on November 23rd, 2004 05:37:12 PM A smart gal at HP gave this solution and it worked for me:
This issue could be conflict of flees between HP software and the Operating System. Disabling Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) in Windows XP will resolve the issue.
Please perform the below steps to resole the issue:
1. From the Window Desktop, click Start, and then click ControlPanel.
The Control Panel will open.
2. Double-click the Administrative Tools icon. The Administrative Tools window will open.
3. Double-click the Services icon. The Services window will open.
4. Double-click the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) icon. The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Properties (Local Machine) windows will open.
5. On the General tab, click the drop-down arrow in the Start-up Type box and select Disabled.
6. Click Stop. A window will open with a message stating the service is being found. When the message closes, verify the ServiceStatus displays Stopped. Repeat this step if necessary.
7. Click Apply, and then click OK. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on November 24th, 2004 01:13:34 PM I am indebted to the A/G who spoke to a smart gal at HP. Will try what is reccommended and report back. In the meantime thanks for taking the time to post your message. |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on November 26th, 2004 06:30:55 PM I just spoke with HP. This fix works. Control Panel, System, Advanced Tab. Under Performance click "settings" and then the "Data Execution prevention" tab. Select "turn on DEP for all programs except those I select." Then select the "generic host...." box and re-start your computer. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on November 28th, 2004 02:20:41 PM I have had the same problem with the GHP error popping up and the DEP closing it on boot-up. This will happen for 3 times before the system finally quites. I tried disabling the WIA as mentioned from HP, but that did not seem to work.
I then looked further into the firewall service(windows firewall under control panel), I have a router with firewall and so the firewall is off (under the general tab). I did find that although the firewall is suppose to be off, the system has it on for the network connections (under the advanced tab). I unclicked both the connections manager and local area connection and the error did not come back on reboot. Also, the navigating speed for my computer and IE came back. Hope this helps for anyone still encountering problems. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on November 29th, 2004 11:31:31 AM I posted the AG 11/28 message and forgot to add my printer information. I have a HP 2510 using the wireless connection. The PC is wired to the router. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on November 29th, 2004 02:22:57 PM Hello every body, well... I have the same problem with the GHP error popping up... I already done the WIA thing, will wait and see if the problem is solved, and report back. I hope you good luck!!! Thanks for the support. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on November 29th, 2004 02:38:45 PM Anonymous Ghost...I tried both "turn on the DEP except for programs I select" & selected "generic Host" and also disabling the WIA. Only after disabling the WIA did my computer get back to normal. I recently installed drivers for an HP 7400 series wireless printer/scanner. The problems started after this, so in my case it is fair to say there was a conflict with the HP drivers.
Thanks for your help. You have saved me tremendous aggravation! |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on November 30th, 2004 08:26:42 PM w00t This worked... whoever talked to the HP chick and posted it thank yA!, didnt take long and was super ez.. hopefully i wont be back again hehehehehe |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on November 30th, 2004 09:11:38 PM none of that worked. i can't even access my firewall properties, they wont open. It also says i have no speakers....what is going on?! |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 01st, 2004 06:36:44 PM I disabled WIA and turned DEP off for GHP and that took care of my problem.
I started getting the problem after installing the drivers for my HP 2510 all in one. I downloaded the latest drivers from HP for the install so I know it is not an old driver problem.
Incidently, I did not have the problem when I was running the printer wired to the network, I only got the problem once I turned the wireless connection on. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 04th, 2004 12:06:41 PM Same problem as everyone else. No audio, can't turn on firewall in Windows Xp with sp2. My problem started after visiting a webpage that checks your firewall. My antivirus popped up saying there was a virus attack. After that could not get on the internet until I shut down my firwall. After rebooting I go the dreaded message and all of the above mentioned problems. Have tried each and every fix listed here and other forums. The microsoft fix was way off base. Surely all of the error reports to MS should have sounded a alarm someplace!?? |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 04th, 2004 04:28:19 PM I am a tech consultant. I too, recently installed a new HP 7400 All-in-One Wireless unit at my office. This error message has occured on our wireless laptops and hardwired desktops. So far I have disabled the WIA and my surfing speed has returned. HP looks like the culprit problem and so far I have found disabling this administrative option to be the solution. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 04th, 2004 04:31:46 PM After numerous attempts at fixes, reloads, virus scans, worm, trojanand whatever else and reading hundreds of posts in forums someone said they had found explorer cache loaded up to max with crap frum surfing various sites. I dounloaded Privacy eraser pro and ran it. HOLY CRAP!! It erased stuff for almost a half hour and freed up 289 megs of pure crap from IE cache. I suppose you could do this manually as well. No more Generic Host Process errors under any circumstance!!
GIVE IT A TRY!! |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 05th, 2004 07:59:50 PM i emcountered the same problem ""Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close..." i am not an computer expert, it would disable my internet connection, i spent considerable amount to have it rectified, all in failures, i removed the Service Pack 2, to my surprise my computer has been working fine.... |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 06th, 2004 08:30:24 PM Hey all
Yeah this "Generic Host Processes" message has been giving me the sh*ts for while now, but I think I fixed the problem on my comp... by the way I'm no computer genius so I don't know if its totally gone from my comp or just hasn't appeared in a while...
I went into start/search and then I did a search of my whole computer for something called "svchost.exe"... after I did that search, a whole bunch of memory dumps (I think thats what its called) came up with "svchost.exe.hdmp" or something like that... I just deleted those memory dumps and the problem hasn't come back in a while...
Anyway I don't know if it will work for you but it worked for me.. if someone finds and actual solution could you please post back.. thanx

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 10th, 2004 06:54:01 PM I have found that many thing are causing this problem with the same results. One thing in my case has bee CODECS! Any new audio/video software which has new plug ins or added codecs. I had a brain fart going back trying to trace backwards any thing unusual I had added. I had been trying various plug ins and codecs for win amp and various players. I deleted the codecs I had acquired off the net and the GENERIC HOST bullcrap has been gone now for over a week. All the bug chasers, trojan removers, system scanners, virus scanners, swinging dead chickens over my head and chanting mantras all had no effects or answers. I think crap is riding in with new software patches or programs which creeps into things that have to do with audio hardware or printer hardware. Obviously it is so sneaky that MS has yet to discover the source or the cure. Also obvious I am no computer guru but I have searched hundreds of forums and chat rooms looking for answers to fix this crap and have been one of the lucky one's who have found a place this has ridden in on me. Think back! Try the least obvious thing you can think of. It came in on something you introduced into your computer. You may have to delete and live without whatever application or hardware that caused it. Once you find the thing that did it to you send that to the author of that software so they can disect thier code and see what has snuck in to it. Good Luck! |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 12th, 2004 12:55:33 PM i bought a new pc TODAY.
- the first thing i did was instal a my Broadband Speedtouch modem, then connected to the internet.
the first thing i did was to download zone alarm firewall
after installing the firewal i began getting these damn messages.
now let me remind you - it DIDNT come from any programs other that the ones supplied with the computer - as i hav't installed any.
when i press crtl+alt+delete i see FOUR svchost. programs running.
will deleteing them bugger something up really badly? i don't think ill be doing it at the moment.
it is worrying though - and im getting the slow internet - followed by a sudden rush of page loading.
HELP ANYONE!!! |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 12th, 2004 08:58:54 PM Where did you download from?? You say it happened after you downloaded Zonealrm. Possibly something hitch hiked in from the download site. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 13th, 2004 01:11:58 AM i downloaded zonealarm from zonelabs website - i highly doubt it 'hitchhiked' from there.
i think it's on the systen straight from the factory - in xp from the start
what can i do about the 4 running processes right now... |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 13th, 2004 02:11:02 PM If you attempt to look at this logically (thank you Mr. Spock!) there seems to be no logic to it. HP print drivers, codecs, modems, any thing people add to a system suddenly triggers this. SP2 or no SP2. The only thing that seems to be the same is the addition of something. I have been using XP since it's inception and have never run into this problem until the last couple of months. I have added junkware from all over the world and tried hundreds of new things on the same system I am using now. Never even knew what a Generic Host problem was until recently. In all of the forums and postings I have read that same pattern seems to fit the majority of the people posting. There must be something introduced into the internet community that sticks below the surface of your isp or someplace out there just waiting for a download to occur and then slides on in with it. This is a virus in it's truest form. So evasive that can not be detected until eneough people with the knowledge and power can discover it.
Just my humble opinion! |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 15th, 2004 06:03:08 AM I have to agree with the above post. I am currently running a small network at my work place. I have had to reformat all the computers on the network and law and behold i still get the same message. I havent installed anything apart from my internet connection and downloaded the windows update. I think there is a new super virus on the internet, that as soon as you download something it creeps into you machine. Damn thing......clever though if you think about it....??? |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 15th, 2004 08:28:34 PM I had the same thing after having some malware removed from my computer and decided to go with the SP2 update. Ultimately we ended up uninstalling the damn thing to stop it from occuring. I have searched all over and no one seems to have any clue, including microsoft's website . I have some doubt about it being a virus since a simple uninstall of the software kills the issue. It sems to lie within the SP2 program itself. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 16th, 2004 11:53:41 AM I have the same problem. Run all the "fixes" - I ran AdAware and FixBlast in SafeMode; disabled WIA, Norton Anti Virus, HiJackThis, Spybot. All to no avail.
Now, I am thinking that this is a Firewall issue - but don't know enough about what ports or things to look into. Funniy thing is, I have Norton Internet Security - and now it does not launch on start as it used to - but even when NIS is NOT on, I get the stupid Generic Host process error. I do have an HP printer and scanner, but have disconnected them. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 16th, 2004 12:34:04 PM ONly One solution ! Format your HDD. Reinstall OS. Don't connect to Internet without Updated or new virus Software. !!!!!!! Understood????? |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 17th, 2004 09:23:45 PM Take a look at the following link - the problem is a FIREWALL problem. Likely Zone Alarm or Norton.

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 19th, 2004 12:30:11 AM Tried that site. No fix there. Did away with all firewalls and antivirus programs. Still same problem with or without! |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 20th, 2004 10:34:36 PM My problem occurred as a result of installing Nod32 antivirus software. IMON (email monitoring) seems to conflict with Choice Mail (anti-spam e-mail software). I'm running XP sp2 with ZA Pro. If I quit IMON or quit Choice Mail, My problem is eliminated. I thought the conflict was in the POP3 port settings, but I reconfigured them and set my e-mail client(Outlook 2003)account, ChoiceMail, and Nod 32 to read port 112 and thought the problem was fixed, but after 45 hours, the error reoccurred. If I come up with anything shortly, I'll be sure to post. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 21st, 2004 08:10:36 AM I recently bought a hp 2710 Printer, and had this problem, after trying many things, I read the comments made to someone by a smart gal at HP, I am truly greatful to that person for sharing there information with us, as it has cured my problem, it truly does work. I then followed the instructions msconfig/stop HpwuSchdl to remove 0x009a96bc problem. And for those who also experience hpq08 problem during shutdown, the answer is; go to start/programmes/start up folder, delete (shortcut folder) Digital Image Folder, and hey presto all works fine |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 21st, 2004 10:37:05 AM For those whose problem is not related to HP printers, there is a workaround, but it may not be as helpful as you want. When the "Generic Host Process error" appears clik to get more information on the error, you will see some *.dll file. If you don't recognize it, you will have to copy that file into Windows Search and look for it. Once you have found it, right clik on it, select properties and note what program it is associated with. That program is the one that has the faulty Dynamic Link Library, dll, file. SVCHOST errors are generally caused not by SVCHOST but by the dll's they are hosting. A dll is essentially a list of instructions for a particular part of a program. If there is a problem, rather than a programmer having to rewrite the entire code for a program, he only has to replace a particular dll file that possesses the instructions he is dealing with. Printer drivers, for example often have the extension ".dll"
The short of this is that there may be a conflict with some program dll's that are incompatible with XP sp2. If everything was fine before SP2 was installed then you only have three choices: Revert back to SP1; wait for a Microsoft update; or wait for your software manufacturer to introduce a new dll or driver. In the meantime you can quit using the offending program or it's offending component such as IMON (email checking) in Nod32 antivirus or just continue to put up with the intrusion. See, I told you the workaround wasn't all that satisfying. ;-D |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 22nd, 2004 09:57:00 AM Oops, I missed one other potential workaround. It does appear as mentioned earlier that if you have a software firewall like ZAPro that you can disable Generic Host process from acting as a server. I've tried this with regard to my problem regarding IMON (e-mail checking) in Nod32 antivirus, and after 36 hours I have yet to have a conflict, but I'll need another 36 hours to be sure this works.
I also have yet to notice any collateral problem as a result of preventing Generic Host Process from functioning as a server, but only time will tell. Hope this helps. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 22nd, 2004 07:56:45 PM btw if you goto start > run
and then type cmd
type shutdown -a and it will abort the system shutdown.
just a handy little hint. i find that the generic host process manages to download megs of shit off the net and i have nfi what its downloading so i made zone alarm block it but then internet pages wont load up... :( |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 22nd, 2004 10:27:57 PM Hmmm. I'll have to try that, but then I haven't had a problem with internet pages loading with Generic Host Process blocked as a server in ZAPro. I do have "trusted and "internet" under Access both enabled for GHP, but just not as a server.
Thanks for the tip, however. If I find I need to re-enable GHP as a server I will use your suggestion. :) |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 04th, 2005 05:32:07 PM I would suggest repairing xp, do this by boot from cd, and selecting a "new installation" then when u select what drive/partition to install on select the partition driver that already has ure xp installed, then select the "repair" option when asked by pressing R, this usually fixes things like annoying errors. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 04th, 2005 09:59:42 PM note found this on hp:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c00273968
An exception must be created in the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) tab for the following programs:

Hp digital imaging monitor (hpqtra08.exe)
Hp image zone fast start (hpqthb08.exe)
Perform the following procedure to create exceptions in the DEP:
Click Start and then Run. The Run window opens.
In the Open: box, type sysdm.cpl.
Click OK. The System Properties window opens.
On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
On the Data Execution Prevention tab, do one of the following:
Click Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only to select the OptIn policy.
Click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select to select the OptOut policy, and then click Add to add the programs that you do not want to use the DEP feature.

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 10th, 2005 10:28:41 PM Flippin Microshit has received thousands of error reports on this by now. NO FIX! The big concern with them is to promote and sell new product. The hell with the junk that is already out here unless you are willing to pay BIG BUCKS by the hour to fix the junk they have created. I have been stuck with this problem for months and can not find a working fix anywhere. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 11th, 2005 05:15:34 PM had a customer who had the countdown problem, was able to get in through safe mode after a few tries. sp2 was downloaded into computer and i uninstalled mcafee and reloaded the newer internet security 2k5 and problem came back. unloaded mcafee and repartioned drive with windows full edition home xp and loaded mcafee immediatly. downloaded updates for mcafee and then downloaded sp2 and seems to work fine now. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 16th, 2005 02:44:38 AM There is a patch on th HP site that solves the problem for all people using an HP All-In-One Printer. Thank God! I wasted 2 hours trying to fix this! -Bob |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 16th, 2005 11:38:48 PM My recomendation guys..
once you install SP2.. SHUT DOWN its firewall, if you do a port scan via web, you will always find OPEN ports.. why? because SP-2 as some built-in auto detectors and "RAW SOCKET" connectivity wich lets microsoft windows servers to connect to your computer ( NT core of windows did that in my system, so I have blocked its port, the ports are 135 and 1025, sometimes 1026 )
these are open always because of the new way of running aplications installed in SP-2)
so get sygate, and block them.. I've had no problems with that. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 17th, 2005 04:28:06 PM don't know what is causing this problem but i can tell you for sure it is not related to service pack 2, i'm a tech support representative (contractually bound from saying for who) and i have been dealing on and off with the same customer for a week to try and resolve this issue. the pc doesn't have xpsp2 and has been reinstalled from cd twice at this point. we are currently attempting a reinstall again after erasing and recreating the drive partition with fdisk. will post again in an hour or so after i see what happens. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 18th, 2005 07:22:19 AM Take a deep breath, a beer and than:
navigate to start/settings/control panel/system, go to 'Advanced' tab, go to 'Startup and recovery'> settings and uncheck 'Automatically restart'. This doesn't solve the problems, but at least will not restart anymore. If (doubtly) will continue to fail some services than navigate to start/run, type 'services.msc' and do the same thing with the service that fails.
Cheers |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 20th, 2005 04:26:06 PM after reformatting the drive with fdisk and reinstalling windows the issue was still occuring, what seems to have fixed it was this series of steps
7. Click Apply, and then click OK.
still don't know what is causing this but it appears to be an issue that is built right into windows, reinstalling makes no difference |

SYMPTOMS
When you run a program in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Data Execution Prevention – Microsoft Windows
To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program.
Name: program name
Publisher: program publisher
Data Execution Prevention helps protect against damage from viruses or other threats. Some programs might not run correctly when it is turned on. For an updated version of this program, contact the publisher. What else should I do?
If you click Close Message, the program quits, and Windows Error Reporting gives you the option to send an error report.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because Microsoft Windows XP SP2 uses the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature to help prevent damage from viruses and from other security threats.
DEP works alone or with compatible microprocessors to mark some memory locations as "non-executable." If a program tries to run code from a protected location, DEP closes the program and notifies you, whether the code is malicious or not.
RESOLUTION
To avoid this behavior, contact your program vendor to see if an update is available that enables the program to work correctly with DEP.
WORKAROUND
If your computer is set to apply DEP to all programs and services, the DEP error message will have a Change Settings button. If an update to the program is not available, follow these steps to add an exception for the program from the DEP error message: 1. When you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section, click Change Settings.
2. Click to select the check box next to the program, and then click Apply.
3. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click OK two times, and then restart your system.
You can also add an exception for the program by using System Properties in Control Panel. To do this, follow these steps:1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
2. Click the Advanced tab, click Performance, and then click Settings.
3. In Performance Options, click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Add.
4. In the Open dialog box, locate and then click the program.
5. Click Open, click Apply, and then click OK. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click OK.
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
MORE INFORMATION
If your computer is configured to turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only, the Change Settings button will not be available from the DEP error message.
You can view the DEP configuration for your computer in System in Control Panel. To do this, follow these steps:1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
2. Click the Advanced tab, and then under Performance, click Settings.
3. In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Data Execution Prevention tab.
4. Note if Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only or Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select: is selected.
When your computer is configured to turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only, you cannot add an exception for a program. This is the behavior that is by design in Windows XP SP2.
If your computer is configured to turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only, and the DEP error message continues to appear, a program may be installed that extends Windows functionality. This program may be installed so that it causes a DEP problem in an important Windows program or service.
If this behavior is recent and has not occurred before, you may be able to prevent the DEP error message by removing recently installed programs. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 24th, 2005 08:56:33 PM AUGH!!! I am so not a computer person an am struggling with this same error! It seemed to start after outlook quarantined a W32/Bagle.z@MM virus. I then began getting the message the above message and To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Name: Generic Host Process for Win32 Services. No matter what I click next I also get svchost.exe - Aplication Error. The instruction at "ex009c96bc" referenced memory at "0x00000000." The memory could not be "written" Click okto terminate the program click cancle to debug. No matter what I click, I get Generic Host Process for Win32... error and start over. It's maddening. My McAfee didn't catch (and I can't delete) the virus and this stupid geneirc Host Process error prevents me from working. My computer even generates this error when I am not on line and am trying to run nearly anything or go to "My Computer". I have also recently installed HP2610 Photosmart All in One printer. Per above advice, I will try to uninstall it. Any other suggestions for a computer idiot? |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 26th, 2005 04:55:48 PM Generic Host is an HP problem!!
my desktop has the Generic host problem and wouldn't stay on-line until the ip software was deleted and a manual connection set up ... for some reason the manual connection allows the computer to go on-line (plus i negoiated three free months of dial-up service)
prior to deleting the ip software, i noticed after being booted from the internet, the computer reported the modem was still 'being used by a program'. To end the program i had to shut down and sometimes re-install the modem driver before the unseen program would release the modem
In exhasperation, I started using my work laptop to go on-line at home, but also wanted to print documents on my home printer ... so i loaded the driver for my HPphotosmart onto the laptop...
... guess what? 2 days after the photosmart driver was loaded onto the laptop, the same generic host problem appeared .. even with the latest updated driver
i think the HPphotosmart is tying up the modem in conflict with microsoft updates ... which would explain why so many people report the generic host problem arriving with SP2 ... the reason for saying this is because my desktop worked fine with the photosmart until shortly after i downloaded MS updates 6 months ago
by the way, uninstalling the photosmart driver does not resolve the issue ... nor system recoveries, nor destructive recoveries, nor installing a new hard drive
but i can say this, HP is fully aware of the generic host problem.
When i sent my desktop to HP last week for warranty service to correct the generic host problem, the lady taking the repair order asked me if the repair was related to generic host ... i asked her how she knew, but she backed away as if the company was looking over her shoulder
under any circumstance, it's time for the public to storm the HP bastile at 1800-652-6672 and get a new printer or a company fix!!! Two of my computers are mucked becasue of this problem. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 28th, 2005 01:49:16 PM Man i read ALL the posts, i tried All the solutions and still the BLOODY GHP error pops up! is there ANYTHING else plz that u can suggest? i'm desperate :( |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 29th, 2005 02:15:01 AM I'm willing to start a support group. So as I understand it now, it's all related to HP printers?? And we're stuck with this blasted issue until they come up with a fix?? Is this remotely close to correct? |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 29th, 2005 01:14:15 PM The same error message started to annoy me after i got a new HD and installed it and started to Defrag my old one. I stopped the Defragmentation before it was finished and this was the turning point... I think I´m screwed |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 29th, 2005 07:49:55 PM I have not been running any kind of hp anything and I am stuck with this problem as well. It never tries to shut down my computer but after the error happens I can no longer access my sound devices, I can't use the built in Windows XP firewall software and my wireless networking is killed. Can't seem to blame HP exclusively for this. Something seems to ride in and attack a XP computer. My computer alone has sent over 100 error reports to Micropuke and no fixes there either. Why is this such a tough problem to resolve? You can't seem to find a viable answer or fix any place!! |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 30th, 2005 01:00:23 AM Hey all, I too had the GHP errors on boot after installing my new HP Photosmart 2610 All-in-One. Saw this post and called the 800 number in previous post,(800-652-6672) got HP tech support, and he promptly and courteously walked me through downloading a patch and adding some exceptions to the DEP entries list. This eliminated my problems completely. It seems to be something between Win XP SP2 and the HP software that came with the printer. Many thanks to this forum and the nice guy at HP for helping get my 'puter sorted out !!!!! |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by toddzan on January 30th, 2005 01:45:03 AM Exciting to hear HP resolved someone's GHPerror; sounds to good to be true but I'm calling first chance I get. Will post sequela. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 30th, 2005 01:22:14 PM After struggling with this same problem like all of you, I followed the advice of 2 of the people. I disabled the Microsoft Imaging under the Control Panel Administrative Tool and added the hpquatro08.exe to the execeptions and I am back in business. HP should be shot. This clearly is an HP error and given the many dollars that we have all spent on their products, we should all force HP to give us our money back. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 30th, 2005 08:05:08 PM Okay people, I however, have a different problem. I haven't installed anything possibly related to HP, the closest thing to HP that I might have on here is my Kodak easyshare camera. My printer is Cannon, and my computer is of Dell origin. Have you all had the problem of your internet just suddenly sort of freezing? For instance, I'll be on yahoo and AIM, then they disconnect. I'm still online, because the connection button is still at the bottom right of my screen, however I can not view webpages. So I have to sign off and sign on all over again, just to wait another ten or so minutes before it decides to crap out on me. If this isn't related to the Generic host thing for win32, which I currently do not know how to fix, would perhaps anyone know how to fix this problem with the internet? I use dial up and its really annoying. Help... ugh... I didn't do anything to deserve this, it's been going on since about January 16 and I'm about to lose my mind... |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 31st, 2005 06:45:28 PM Right lets get one thing clear
THIS ERROR HAS NOTHING TO WITH HP, MODEMS, UPDATES OR ANYTHING ELSE
How people get this error I do not know but once you get it, it can drive you ***** INSANE!
I got it, formatted my hard drive, installed my modem and it was there, i could go on the internet for no more than 2 minutes before something would ***** up!
but did this:
Which was metioned earlier.
HOLY CRAP! IT ***** WORKS!
THANKYOU GOD!
THANKYOU JESUS!
THANK THE ***** LORD!!!!!
and most of all THANK THAT SMART GAL AT HP!!! |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on January 31st, 2005 06:58:11 PM I should also mention, when i formatted my harddrive and installed windows there can be no virus there: am i right or am i right? yes i think i'm right.
so the only thing on the computer is windows xp service pack 1a (original disk btw)
then i install an antivirus program evrything cool right. then i install my modem and update the antivirus program
all of a sudden it finds a virus in windows .... why?
i have a suspicion that the antivirus is finding a virus in windows which is not actually a virus and when you disinfect it, you getting the generic host Win32 problem
anyone else noticed this or is it just me? |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on February 04th, 2005 01:56:02 PM This error is actually related to LSASS.EXE, this error will occur when the Virus program itself bombs out. LSASS.EXE is the Sasser virus. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on February 04th, 2005 10:53:03 PM *joins wagon* Unlike most of you I dont have an HP printer or scaner, still "win32 generic..." window pops up at least 3 times dayly and makes it unable for me to sign in again. I usually have to reboot after that. I recently did a sytem recovery for my computer when it didnt want to shut down everytime I tried to shut it down. I found this

but i dont even want to try it because ive been hearing in other places that it dosent even work. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on February 06th, 2005 03:14:33 PM Re the GHP problem.
This was coming up so often, causing the net to freeze or the processor to run at 100% tied up with svchost.exe that I was about to bin the whole machine!!!!
So..........
I formatted, loaded xp, norton, internet drivers. Updated Norton via the web, and almost immediately GHP came back. Instant depression.
So........
I formatted, loaded xp2, Norton, Internet drivers, then updated Norton via live update directly without actually going via IE.
From this moment I've had a nice clean machine and no GHP problems.
Subsequently gone through details of svchost.exe problems. I see this is a legitmate XP programme, however there is a virus/worm infecting a machine with the same name. I would suggest that it is this svchost.exe that is the crux of the problem and can infect a machine through a browser that has no proper firewall. Further it appears to evade anti virus detection!!!!!!!
I await correction. |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on February 14th, 2005 12:17:52 PM I think it has nothing to do with printer and scanner because I just had my laptop reformated and have a fresh System, but when I started using the Internet then I started to encounter this problem. I think it has something to do with security settings or Internet, because I am not using my laptop for internet browsing I never encountered this problem. |

i get the same generic host error, but instead of having to restart, i have NO sound. However, if I leave the Error window open, i have sound.
my taskbar goes from the XP blue colour to an old grey Window ME One...
Also, on my desktop a weird Zip file appeared called "hosts" after opening it, it has one file in it: Hosts and the type is just "file"
Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated. |

Guys and girls, I've had the same problem and have been following this post for months now. It is NOT to do with HP or any crap like that. Simply...Get Webroot Spy Sweeper and Spygate Personal Firewall, both free. And get rid if you have it of Norton its RUBBISH! And get to Panda. Thats it nothing difficult, you can get most of it on www.download.com. |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on February 26th, 2005 07:51:41 PM There was a post back on Jan 31st....about antivirus thinking the sp1a actually contains a virus because of new updates and the SP2. I reformatted... installed drivers, norton, and boom back.... did the almight '7 step process'- great gone!!! UHMMM NO! Now the error seems to be showing up as a windows messenger error - same symptoms though. Booted off the net.... and unresponsive system. Very annoying and trying at this point.... I'm pulling out my hair at this thing. I can't even do anything on the internet..... this happens to me every single time. Not once a day, everytime! Anyone out there think this is a microsoft thing??? |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on February 27th, 2005 05:40:34 PM my guess is... possibly related to messenger. remove it from start up, or uninstall it and use the oldest version. i did it in addition to other suggestions and I think this really worked (knocks on the wood) |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on February 27th, 2005 09:16:42 PM Well it's windows messenger i'm using - not even attempting to try to download msn messenger. I figure that'll just send it a huge spiral downward.
I'm not able to install that SP2 with any success. Anyone else having that problem?
AND Norton won't run properly either. Can do scans, but it won't enable to AutoProtect. Anyone else with this problem? Have re-installed many times....
Just reformatted yesterday if that helps.
Someone pleaseeee help me!! |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on March 12th, 2005 04:35:06 AM Hi I am Raghu Menon from India.
Give it a try
Windows Worms Doors Cleaner
http://www.firewallleaktester.com/wwdc.htm
Most of the worms, in particular the most famous, use known vulnerabilities in Windows services which are enabled by default and that often can't be disabled via the OS's configuration. Even with these services patched with Microsoft security fixes, they are still exposed to the Internet at large ready to be exploited by the next exploit. Server side services are not covered by windows worms doors cleaner which aims only home users computers, who themselves shouldn't run any webservers.
These webservers should be patched and can't really be disabled without removing the service offered to the Internet (like the website).
These ports/services on client side are :
* DCOM RPC (listen on port 135) MS03-026
* RPC Locator (port 445) MS03-001, MS04-011
* NetBIOS (ports 137/138/139) MS03-049
* UPNP (port 5000) MS01-059
* Messenger service (uses RPC/NetBIOS ports) MS03-043
Windows Worms Doors Cleaner allows you to close these services the worms rely on.
Note : Kerio Firewall 2.1.5 (I suppose so the whole 2.x series) has a bug while disabling Locator and/or NetBT service, it displays the following error message "Windows - Fatal Application Exit. Kerio Personal Firewall Driver : Unable to attach 'TCP'". However unlike I have said in the previous note, Kerio 4.x series is not affected by this bug. There is nothing I can do about the Kerio bug, I can't fix their software, and Kerio would probably answer you that the update is the 4.x series.
=> a fix recently available Here

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on April 24th, 2005 11:26:32 PM I just built this computer a few days ago and was worried it was something I had done to it. I'm glad, albeit in an odd way, that this is a problem many people are having and that it's most likely due to microsoft updates.
So, here's my story. I downloaded the updates like the rest of you and had pretty much no problem. That was until I shut down my comp, of course. The damn thing took forever to shut down, so I finally got fed up and turned it off manually.
Anyways, I get the same "Generic Host Process Win32" bullshit everyone else seems to be getting when I log onto windows. I do have one other problem, as well, but I'm not sure if it's related. The sound on my computer has been, for lack of better words, "acting screwy". The sound on the speakers sometimes goes out and other times it only comes out of one speaker. (Actually, the speakers for my comp are either on or don't work, but my headphones will always, at least, have sound coming out of one ear.)
If anyone else is having this problem, please, please e-mail me at Gio87@comcast.net. Much appreciated. Thanks in advance! |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on June 01st, 2005 08:55:30 AM Hi, I've had this problem for probably over 18 months, upon start-up only. I also suspect that it had to do with the installation of our All-in-one HP printer about that time. So for over 18 months, it has just become a way of life using this computer. Start it, wait for the error sound and the error boxes to pop up, then click out of them.
Two days ago, I stopped getting this error! Mind you, I don't miss the extra steps on start up, but I'm wondering how it fixed itself!? Anyone else have a magic recovery from this annoyance without having done anything? |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on June 15th, 2005 07:38:47 PM I had this once until I went to: Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools > Services. Scroll down to "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and richt click on it. Select "Properties" then click on the "Recovery" tab. In the top 3 drop down boxes, select "Restart the service". This helped to clear it once for me, but when I find something else out, I'll let ya'll know. P.S. This is only for XP. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on June 17th, 2005 03:51:15 PM Oh also, it's not only caused by the HP printer or the SP2 update. I don't have an HP printer or the Windows update and I have it. I just don't have sound anymore. |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on July 12th, 2005 01:27:54 PM Well guys, the 1 min shutdown is acutally a process called lsass which is a .exe and a .dll . Both are processes related to shutting down your computer via the start menu. In this case, a virus called Sasser (and sometimes Blaster) have attached themselves to that process and give out a call to shutdown the system. In this case AVG antivirus will usually find it, if not then go to Symantecs site and download the corrosponding tool to remove the virus for whatever version of sasser or blaster it is...as far as the Generic Host blah blah blah. I havent figured that one out yet... |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on July 17th, 2005 12:40:54 AM I have the same problem, when connecting to the inet, the taskbar locks up and the system slows down.. and another thing, I used to run kerio instead the WinXPSP2 firewall, but now not even google loads in the iexplorer or mozilla, (the explorers remain looking at 'localhost' and freezes) I try to uninstall/intall kerio about 2 times, but trouble seems to stay! Now, I unistalled kerio and run the integrated Win firewall and now pages loads, but the taskbar sills lock up when connecting, there is a trouble in some of my instances of 'svchost.exe' (the larger one on memory) 'cause when I terminate it via taskmanager the taskbar works properly when connecting, etc.
The problem with my kerio and my explorers remains, even disabling network sequrity, no web page can be loaded on my explorers.
This problems comes to me after installig/unistalling various elements of ISS 5.1.
I decided to backup all my work and restore my PC with my Nghost DVDs. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on July 17th, 2005 09:18:09 AM Hey all,
I just had the same problem and seem to have fixed it.
There is one or more files that seem to cause the problem. I find them in c:\Documents and Settings\computername\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\content.ie5\ (used the execute function in the startmenu) whilst deleting all the files there hoping to delete a dreaded spyware file or worse. I couldn't delete certain maps, thus I disconnected myself from the internet and turned off every internet explorer and tried again, with success! By the way, you'll notice that after having disconnected your computer from the internet, the error stops popping up.
It's always good to delete all your cookies and the junk in your temporary internet files (including the hidden content.ie5 subdir). Gets rid of most spyware fast! |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on July 25th, 2005 08:36:36 AM Finally solved this problem on my computer.
Try this one. Windows XP (SP2).
1. Go to Control Panel
2. Go to Administrative Tools
3. Go to Services
4. Disable IPv6 Helper Service (this is not a critical service in most networks)
5. Try restarting.
This solved it. I hope it ends most of the inquiries regarding this problem. |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on August 19th, 2005 06:40:48 PM Ive had the problem for the longest time and tried everything i read on alot of websites.. NOTHING EVER WORKED.. Until I tried something i didn't read and tried to figure out the problem myself.
So If you have this problem and all else fails, do what I did.
Go to Start, then Run. Type in MSCONFIG. At the top you will see a tab named services. At the bottom you will see a check box named "hide all microsoft services" click on that. Look at the remaining services and see if you have a service named "Machine Debug Manager". If you do make sure its unchecked (if its checked uncheck it) and click apply than ok. Restart your computer and it should never pop up again. |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on August 27th, 2005 09:27:23 PM My hats off to the person who suggested disabling Windows Image Acquistion. This fixed a very long battle I have had with numerous svchost.exe applicatione exceptions (even though I routinely virus scan this machine and it sits behind a firewalled router) and the Generic Host Process shutdown problem. I even went so far as to reformat and reinstall everything and the problem came back to haunt me again. Even the 'hotfix' from Microsoft didn't fix it. I believe the culprit is my HP Photosmart 2610 or my Kodak Easyshare, however, after running services.msc (Start-Run-services.msc) and changing the setting for Windows Image Acquistion from Automatic to Disabled it has FIXED EVERYTHING.
Thanks a bunch, I have tried everything thing you can find from a Google search on Generic Host Process Error and svchost errors. This was driving me crazy. |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on March 16th, 2006 03:03:28 PM Ahh , worked like a charm. Kudos to however talked to the HP gal. Thanks again. Here's the fix again:

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on May 24th, 2006 03:29:20 PM Well, I'm working on my employer's Dell laptop, pretty much a brand new machine, and she keeps getting these errors when she's working on it. I let it do its thing, then Googled, found you folks and used the Admin Tools procedure listed up top. So far, working like a charm.
This problem *seems* to be tied somehow not just to MS "updates/hotfixes" (MANY of which come preinstalled on the machine!), but also with HP printers and software.
We've got a wireless home network going on here, and had to remove an HP5550 because it simply stopped working (again, pretty much a brand new piece of equipment - I'm not one to give up but my employer is), and we're now down to sharing an HP7410 7400 series all-in-one. I've had some problems with IT that last couple of days, and can't help but wonder if these issues are related.
In any event, thanks to the folks who've posted the fixes, I've got you bookmarked!
Cheers! Marina |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on July 13th, 2006 01:17:23 PM I never had that problem before, then after instaling Norton 2006, I tried to print from my Dos base accounting program and that's when I got the error message, some how they seem to be linked, because I unistall the antivirus and everything is fine now. I tried the Microsoft patch, didn't work and actually it seems to be a problem when the system trys to update the virus definitios and the windows updates. |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by kdogg on August 16th, 2006 01:47:23 AM Started having Generic Host Process error pop up. I don't think I downloaded anything new. It just started happening. About twenty minutes after turning on the computer, the message would pop up.
After the error message, the task bar would turn into the beige retro style for a few seconds and switch back to the XP blue.
I use a media player called gom player which plays avi files. After the error message pops up, if I try to play an avi file using gom player, I get an error message within gom player that says the computer does not have the codec for the audio. Then I get video but not audio. Gom player plays avi files fine before the error message, but after the error message, no audio.
If I restart the computer, it will play the avi files with no problem until the error message pops up again. Even after the error code, winamp works fine. I hear all other sounds.
I looked at the image acquisition thing but it is not active.
I deleted the hot fix 873333 cause I read somewhere this is the problem. Didn't work.
One of the posts said to go into msconfig and turn off Machine Dedug Manager under the services tab. I did it. My computer has been on now for an hour. NO ERROR MESSAGE yet. Avi files play sound.
I'll post again if the error message pops up again. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by kdogg on August 16th, 2006 01:50:20 AM About the above comment...
I tried the Microsoft fix, IT DID NOT WORK.
I could still get on the internet with no problems after the Generic host error message. |

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by kdogg on August 16th, 2006 11:25:22 PM Turning off Machine Debug Manager DID NOT WORK. Finally got the Generic Host Process error again, and after that no audio for avi files until I reset the computer.

Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on August 29th, 2006 10:57:01 PM I get constant svchost.exe error messages. I have a new Toshiba laptop running Windows XP Media.
The error messages read:
=====================================
Data Execution Prevention - Microsoft Windows
To help protectr your computer, Windows has closed this program.
name: Generic Host Process for Win32 Services
publisher: Microsoft Corporation
=====================================
and...
=======================================
svchost.exe - Application Error
The Instruction at"0x009996bc" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be written.

So far a few programs have a hard time saving files, and IE will generate these error messages also. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on September 18th, 2006 08:09:51 AM It appears that there are many possibly unrelated problems with its own perculiar symptoms but each of them gave the same error message.
On my PC, it gives out that error message shortly after I go online. After the error message, the Internet will be disabled. Unable to restart my Internet without a reboot.
The problem started shortly after I upgraded my Win2000 to WinXP. I uninstalled my Zonealarm thinking that WinXP already has its own Firewall, I won't need Zonealarm to slow down the start-up. For some yet unknown reason, my WinXP Firewall has not been switched on although my McAfee Antivirs says I have an active firewall.
I was prepared to do all the steps as suggested here, but I decided to re-instate my Zonealarm...and the error message is gone. I have been on the Internet for about 2 hours now and no more error and disabling of my Internet. I could see from my Zonealarm status that there is an attempted intrusion almost every few seconds, no wonder my unprotected Internet Explorer wanted to "preserve" itself by shutting down whenever I log onto the Internet. Hope this could a solution for some of your problems also.
I do not have any HP devices and I have not installed the latest WinXP patch yet. I am still on service 2 straight from the XP installation CD.
My antivirus did not detect any virus or Blaster worm. |
Re: Generic Host Process for Win32...Error by Anonymous Ghost on September 30th, 2006 02:57:34 PM hehehe!!! guys found the answer!!! its stupid ports opened by the worm!!! all you gotta do is close them!!! i did all teh antivirus checks, all teh stupid patches it didnt go off!!! hehe then i digged deeper!!! it wasnt hardware or any other software i installed, i reinstalled xp after completely formatting the hard drive!! well this is the problem!! the worm leaves 2 ports open and leaves a boot sector of itself!!! all you gotta do is close teh ports!!! they are RPC Locator (445) and DCOM RPC (135)!! use this software click here It makes it a whole lot more easier!!! |
