| Increase MFT? | Configuration: |
|
Alright I feel abit foolish, so basically I'll ask simply how do you increase your MFT file? I thought the MFT was your page file, but diskeeper keeps telling me to increase the MFT in volume (since it keeps saying that 99% of my MFT file is being used so defragmentation of it is likely, however I have controled my start up programs and only usually use about 20% of the page file). My page file is just over a gig in size, since I know its best to take the amount of ram and double it for your page file. So as foolish as I feel not knowing this one any help on the subject?DougWindows Xp HomeCeleron 2.8 Ghz768mb RamGeforce 5700LE PCI Card 128MB 128 bit

It is best to let Windows XP manage the page file itself unless you have some unusual requirements. Windows starts of with 1.5 times RAM and adjusts is as necessary. With 768 Mbs of RAM, it probably adjusts it downward.Fixed size page files, while beneficial in Windows 95, slightly less beneficial in Windows 98, is completely unnecessary in Windows XP.Stuart |
Increase MFT? by wanderer4 on April 28th, 2006 05:48:45 AM the NTFS master file table [mft] has no relationship to the system pagefile. The master file table contains all of your folder and file entries. Its what knows where everything is on your disk.I have noted the issue in XP brand new installs that the MTF appears smaller than I would expect whereas some installations have what I would consider a expected size for MFT.Having not looked deeper into the issue the only possible solution I can think of is a complete reformat of the partition with something like Partition Magic and not xp install. |

Re: Increase MFT? by Anonymous Ghost on June 11th, 2006 08:17:59 AM RE MFT and paginf file:
Let me beg to differ here with the esteemed colleagues. On an issue or two. It is TRUE that a doubled paging file size it a bit over-kill,esp.with the RAM that comes with most systems. 1x to 1.5x the ram is good.
HOWEVER,allowing Windows to Mng your page file is just asking for a fragnention nightmare, that and the recucling bin. I recommend a "static" paging file rather than the the default "dynamic". In XP click My computer, click properties, select Advanced tab, click the "Performance" settings button then "Advaned" tab there. at the bottom under Virual Memory click change. You'll see your drive listed with 2 fields with a number the 1st lower than the 2nd. As a rule make the first the exact number as the second. click "Set", then "OK" your way out of there and reboot.
MFT change. The Program "Diskeeper Pro" which is the big brother of the current windows defrag program, has an option in there to chenge it. you can make it any size YOU want or allow Diskeeper to make it a recommended size.
