windows preftech folderConfiguration:
i have a folder in windows explorer called "preftech" ive heard this is a folder that you can empty from time to time if your computer seems to be running slow, was just wanting to get feedback before going in there and deleting files that maybe should be left alone, any feedback would be appreciated. From M$: Optimizing Startup Times by Using Defragmentation ToolsWindows XP Professional monitors the files that are usedwhen the computer starts and when you start applications.By monitoring these files, Windows XP Professional canprefetch them. Prefetching data is the process wherebydata that is expected to be requested is read ahead intothe cache. Prefetching boot files and applicationsdecreases the time needed to start Windows XP Professionaland start applications.Prefetching is further improved if the files are locatednext to each other on the outer edge of the disk. WindowsXP Professional optimizes the location of boot files and applications when the computer is idle. The optimizationoccurs in the background and lasts only a minute or two;you might hear the hard disk being accessed whenoptimization occurs. After the initial optimization takesplace, subsequent optimization occurs, at most, every three days. When you run the Disk Defragmenter tools that are includedwith Windows XP Professional, they can perform anyoptimization updates that are scheduled to take placeduring the next idle period. The Disk Defragmenter toolsdo not disturb the existing layout of optimized boot files and applications.Note * Computers running Windows XP Home Edition also prefetchand optimize boot files and applications.I have deleted all files there, evenLayout.ini, at times without problems. It will rebuild itself over time.

you can delete the content of this folder at anytime without causing any trouble. besides tutorials about prefeteching there is also some freeware programs available to manage and configure prefetching ... use google.Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'icq 10183575

Hi Al, I use a simple batch file to clear the prefetch from time to time.echo offclscd c:windowsPrefetchdel *.*end:Give it a name and drop it on your desktop.Lessons learnt the hard way are not easily forgotten.

I found the following file in prefetch:

slowdowncpu.exe-02826902.pf

Know anything about it. I may be wrong, but it seems that on restart this program automatically begins to run and then my computer locks up. Anything sound familiar? Have a workaround?
