Re: Emachine COA work on another pc? by Anonymous Ghost on February 28th, 2006 01:15:59 PM In practice, the COA keys need to match the version of windows. OEM keys only work with OEM software, Retail keys work with retail software, (this applies to home, professional, and MCE). You can install your e-machines key ona different computer *IF* you have an OEM install CD, which generally discludes recovery CD's. In practice, I've found that most OEM CD keys will fail microsoft's 'activation' process even if the software accepts the key. I have no proof, but believe that this is because the keys are licensed by volume. I have tried reinstalling windows (with matching CD's and Keys) from several manufacturers, including DELL and Compaq, and have had the keys fail. As long as you are doing things legitimately, you can call microsoft, explain the problem, and they will usually issue you a new key. Worst case, go out and buy a legitimate copy of XP retail (pro, home, or MCE, depending on your needs). As long as you don't use it on more than one system at a time, and you don't go through the product activation too often, you can install it on any system you want. |
