| Emachine Error 437 | Configuration: |
|
Running emachine 2700+ W2785, 510 MB/80 GIGAMD Athlon XPI began having problems so severe with XP & tried every known scan, but nothing seemd to help. The PC would hang on the login screen, the shutdown & would take forever to boot into safe mode or to get a box to enter password on login, not to mention the very frequent BSDs, so I finally stuck in the restore disk, rebooted & attemped to restore XP.The Norton Ghost would attempt to restore, but with funny numbers:Local File R:W2785.GHO 38162 MBLocal Drive (1), 76319 MB1/1 Type: 7 (NTFS), Size: 38154 MB DiskloadRestore runs to about 40%, stops at 9003 wlnotify.dll, 6:29 elapsed & 9:30 remaining & gives me the error: 437/Cannot open GHOSTERR.TXT, tells me to contact Symantec Support, and after clicking any key, it says the restoration was completed, take out the CD, and it reboots to nothing. I wouldn't qualify for Norton support - deleted Norton from the gitgo, ya know...went with AVG Free! Norton's site gave me info concerning CD-R & CD-R Troubleshooting, so I read it...not applicable whatsoever to my problem!I tried everything, even reformatting to Fat 32 on several drives and attempted to install 98 SE, which I'd rather be using anyway, but the drivers available for the intagrated board was NT only, as far as I could find, so I purchased a new 80 gig w/ same results on restoring... Next, I went to a freind's & booted with my HDD on his emachine as slave, formatted NTFS, rebooted with my HDD as Master, and it restored with no problems using his restore disk, Stupidly, I thought it might work on my PC when I got back home...lol However, I did notice something during his restore...his numbers were all different in the effect; he showed numbers in all instances like I posted above, but the Local File was 76319 or so, the Local drive was the same, and the Diskload was almost the same, but look at mine...weird, huh?In contacting Emachine Technical Support, they informed me that my warrenty was up, only by a month or so, and they killed me with kindness with the "You're out of luck!" thing. Since then, I have recontacted them, begged for advice & was told 90% of the time, it's the disk, but I'm unsure because of those numbers...I took out the battery, the RAM & tried to locate a jumper to clear the CMOS (CLR CMOS & FLSH_EN)<- and the only two I thought might be it kept the PC from firing up at all...lost my paperwork on the motherboard too...JC 1 & 2 (?) Motherboard numbers: D33007 & 0401/VRC407H - KMA3621597 AM39L -LWithout taking the CPU out, I can see Pheonix Pentium, but I cannot seem to get the clip off to see the numbers...hope that's enough info for assistance. Here's my question(s):1) Is there any means of the system itself, maybe the CMOS, keeping some type of record of the fact I never registered my copy of XP, restricted too many service communication attempts or Windows Updates via firewall or whatever, and could it be keeping me from restoring the PC? Could the MBR have some virus or something placed by a disgruntled Norton?2) Taking the CLR CMOS off completely kills circuit, hanging off one wouldn't matter I doubt...how do I clear the CMOS or is this a factor at all?3) If I wanted to go back to using Win98, which I much prefer, then should I be able to find the drivers for all of the integrated stuff? I am unsure of exactly what I'm looking for in all the below:Specifications Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition AMD Athlon™ XP 2700+ Processor (2.167 GHz) with QuantiSpeed™ architecture VIA KM 400 Chipset 512 MB DDR 80 GB HDD 1 4x DVD±RW Drive; 16x Max. DVD-ROM Drive; 3.5" 1.44MB FDD Includes eMachines 17" eView™ 17s2 Monitor(16" Viewable, 0.27mm dot pitch) VIA S3 UniChrome™ 3D Graphics (1 AGP 8x slot available) 10/100Mbps built-in Ethernet 56K ITU v.92 ready Fax/Modem AC '97 Audio Premium Keyboard, 2-Button Wheel Mouse, Amplified Stereo Speakers 6 USB 2.0 ports (2 on front), 1 Serial, 1 Parallel, 2 PS/2, Audio-In & Out 7.25"w x 14.125"h x 16"d http://www.emachines.com/suppo...;subcat=W-Series&model=W2785 are mostly all NT drivers.4) One other thing I cannot figure out is why the NTFS formatting/partitioning restricts my 80 gig to 76319 MB. What's being written to the remaining couple of gigs, or is that actually 80? The CMOS says 80!Here's about the only thing I found on this: I Flashed a New BIOS on a Emachines I got a 1 1/2 yrs ago, and right> after I booted into windows I had to reactivate XP Home. but here's> the problem???? my copy of XP came w/ the emachines, so when I had to> talk to MS, they told me, to give them my product ID> when I did, they told me that your copy is not a real copy of XP it's> an Emachines OEM, so you will have to contact> Emachines for Help, or you will have to buy a copy of XP!> well I was lucky to have a retail copy of XP laying around, so I just> reformated and installed that, I guees> the Restore Disk that came w/ the Emachines, are TOAST!!! due to> upgdating the BIOS, I thought flashing the BIOS had nothing to do w/> windows, but Boy , was I wrong!!!> BTW this new BIOS flash came form the mobo manufacture, & they have> no idea why the Restore CD's don't work, guess Emachines> BIOS-Locks-it's Restore CD's, but why does this suprize me!!!!------Unless you got the bios update from eMachines, the restore media will see itas a non-eMachines motherboard and will require manual activation. Tryflashing the bios back to the original if you want to continue using theoriginal eMachines configuration. When you flashed the MB, it was essentially seen as a new system.------No ,I got the BIOS Update form the mobo manufacture, Emachines, do not supply BIOS upgrades, are so they say! but why does that suprize me, one things for sure, I'll never, nerer buy and pre-installed OEM PC ever again, it's a lot cheaper to just build your on system and use a REAL MICROSOFT XP CD!!! it's a real shame, what OEM's are doing to consumers, in regaurds to upgrading them, your so limited in what kinds of upgrades you can do, unless the OEM provides them, your pretty much SCREWED!!! I'm real mad about the 749 bucks I paid for this CRAP a 1 1/2 ago!!!! but I'm a lot Smarter & Wiser now!!!!------Was there a need to upgrade the bios? eMachines are very cheap for thefeatures they include with a given system. I would suspect they make itdifficult to upgrade because of the additional costs of support. If you check the price of hardware and software necessary to build acomparable system with the specs of many OEM systems, you will see it isactually cheaper to purchase the OEM system. eMachines in particular makesit very difficult to upgrade their systems without purchasing all of thesoftware bundled with the computer. The do make this quite clear on theirweb site if you want to make a further investigation. The reason I asked if there was a need to upgrade the bios was because ifyou did need to upgrade the bios, it is usually because you changed somehardware. With the OEM restore disks as the only means to restore systemssupplied from eMachines, bios updates would only be a priority if it wasneed to fix a bug or usability issue. I would also bet the MB eMachinespurchases are different from the retail versions.I know you don't like it, but eMachines really didn't screw you, your painwas self inflicted by not researching the pros and cons of makingunauthorized bios upgrades. The bios is like the nervous system in yourbody, if it gets messed up by accident or by playing Russian roulette withrecreational enhancements the results are not good.----------------------So, in reading this, I Think I will do this before long too! (LOL!) I have several older PCs that I have built up from nothing but a case w/ motherboard & CPU, but if someone can possibly help me to get this thing back up using XP, then I would be greatful...Anyway, please forgive me for the extreme info, but I seriously need to get this PC back up for Wifie's schooling like yesterday! Any info will be appreciated:)Thanks,Cisco

Emachine Error 437 by maadhurimn5 on July 06th, 2005 11:31:11 PM I will read your Interesting and deatiled postand come with some detailed suggestions after a 2 hr absence from my PC:-(In the meanwhile, since you know about Hardware , I suggest the following on the premise that the PSU is probably not adequate (you did not mention its Make and wattage):1.Open the case with ESD precautions2. Remove Power connectors of HDD,CDD,FDD, Case Fans ETC3. Remove ATX MoBO Power connector 4. Remove the PSU from the case5. Install an ATX PSU of a Higher Wattage, >350 Watts if possible 400-450 from a PC where it does work properly,If you have space constrains inside the Emachines 'case, you may have to somehow "balance' the PSU Outside the case and still have its 'umbilical cord' attached to MoB Connector and and other Power connectors reaching the dsetination devices.. It is the trickiest part.6. Before you actually attach the Mother Board Power connector and other connectors as stated earlier, "Reseat" the CMOS Jumper from its current two pins (usually 2 & 3) to the next two pins (1& 2) for 10 seconds and back to default (2 & 3)to reset BIOS. 7.Reconnect Power and reboot. This test will most likely exonerate or incrimainte PSU as the causeM |
Emachine Error 437 by cisco2 on July 07th, 2005 09:56:41 AM Thanks, but the problem is really with those numbers I posted. I am unsure of why they are so different than my friend's PC that I restored my new HDD with, and it worked fine on his machine. Sorry for the detailed info, but I was trying to keep from ppl giving me advice that I had already tried. The power supply would be nice upgraded, but that isn't the problem. Thanks for the pin positions too. The CDs that I have might be corrupted, but I was truly hoping somone would come up with another reason those numbers are like that (diskload, etc...). On my friend's PC, his numbers were almost "all" the same, with the diskload being a few shy of the top 2 numbers:Local File R:W2785.GHO 38162 MBLocal Drive (1), 76319 MB1/1 Type: 7 (NTFS), Size: 38154 MB DiskloadMy friend's Local File size was 76319 or so, and the Doskload was about that but less by a few digits...could this be something to consider, considering they will charge me $20 bucks for a replacement set that might do the same exact thing?P.S. There were a few other questions up there too:)Thanks again!Cisco |
Emachine Error 437 by maadhurimn5 on July 07th, 2005 10:53:25 AM You have a lot of information out here. But unfortunately, they are so jumbled up on the screen here for us the readers, even after 3 attempts a cohererent picture does not emerge in my mind. All I can gather from there is that you tried to diagnose a Windows XP (not clear if Home edition or Pro edition)PC Boot problem and STOP ERRORS or FATAL Errors ("BSODS")with "different Scanners" (I guess you meantVirus /Spyware scanners) and later tried to treat them with Norton Ghost Recovery CDs aka "Restore CD" of unspecified source (Not sure you made them or Emachines gave them to you) which ended up in failure with an obscure error message. You then took your HDD and installed it in friend's PC and reformatted it [that was not a bad idea; it made clear to you and us that HDD is 'healthy' and 'viable':-)]Then you used friend's PC's Recovery CD and installed his System image on your HDD as a Master.[ If you were doing that to donate him your 'old HDD' as a second HDD it would have been OK:-)]You transplanted that HDD as your Primary master!! [Unless you two have IDENTICAL MoBo and other hardware this is doom to fail and it did.]Then you bought a new HDD but used the same Recovery Disc that failed in the Emachines PC of yours that had undignosed problems . [you should have anticipated the poor result because you have previously proven with the Old HDD that the HDD was OK but something else in your Emachines PC's hardware [+ /- possibly a corrupt Recovery Disc] was making your Computer Resuscitaion impossible from the very beginning. If you can take a look from outside of your genuine frustration at being 'sweet talked' by Emachines Tech support and 'unhelpful' Synmantec Norton tech support, you can see the real diagnostic possibility of a hardware problem with your Emachines PC. You are 100% sure it is NOT PSU as that is what I suggested to you to test. Can you try this:Remove the HDD and and leave everything else as is and turn the power ON.Tell s what happens on the ScreenWe will take it from there.M |
