Finding Windows XP Serial off a crashed computerConfiguration:
i need to format and re-install the windows, but i have misplaced my key.
I need to recover my product key from my hard disk. I can still access the hard disk, but windows wont boot.
programs exist that allow one to get the product key from a booted computer. is there any way to get it off that crashed computer???
Otherwise is there anything I can copy over from the old data, to give them the same serial key validity.
I know there are programs around like viewkeyxp to retrieve the serial from the registry on a current running windows xp installation but I need their specific key obviously so is there a way to do it for instance by using Registry Editor and loading the hive files from the backup folder into a working Windows XP machine and locate the serial manually maybe?
Operating System : Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Boot up in a parallel copy of XP.

Open REGEDIT

If the information you want to access was in HKEY_CURRENT_USER: Highlight HKEY_USERS, choose "Load hive" from the File menu, open

C:\Documents and settings\\ntuser.dat.

When asked for a name, choose "OldProfile" (or whatever other easily remembered name you choose). Access/backup the keys you're interested in. Once you're done, highlight the "OldProfile" key, choose "Unload hive" from the file menu.

If the information you want to access was in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System or in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software: Highlight HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, choose "Load hive" from the File menu, open

C:\Windows\system32\config\system

or

C:\Windows\system32\config\software

(no extension). When asked for a name, choose "OldSystem" or "OldSoftware" (or whatever). Access/backup the keys you're interested in. Once you're done, highlight the "OldSystem" or "OldSoftware" key, choose "Unload hive" from the file menu.

All of the above is nice, but what is meant by a parallel copy of XP ?

What if the harddrive in question was mounted as a slave to a harddrive that actually boots and works..??

parllel copy = any PC running windows xp to which you have access to.. you should be able to access files from the crashed computer's hdd..

so,
having harddrive in question was mounted as a slave to a harddrive that actually boots and works.. is perfectly fine..

Sounds good so far, but now the big question is which registry key holds the product key from the old harddrive that I'm trying to retrieve the product key from.
