services.exe saturates CPUConfiguration:
I recently purchased the D-Link combo DI624(Hdw Ver. C3; FW ver. 2.42) router together with the DWL-G650(rev. B) notebook adapter. Although the system works, the DWL-G650 PCMCIA adapter is tying up my system. The file services.exe runs every couple of minutes and ties up nearly 100% of the CPU, causing everything else to come to a halt for about a minute. I searched the web, and apparently there are many applications that have this symptom, but I have isolated the adapter card as the cause. When I stop the device, the behavior stops. Earlier versions of Win2K were susceptible to this problem, but it was supposedly fixed in SP4. Nevertheless, there are people out there like me who encounter it.

Additional Comments:
This symptom is directly traceable to the use of the DWL-G650 card. On my desktop computer, I have a Linksys Wireless G USB adapter and encounter no problems connecting to the D-Link router. When I use this same adapter with my Inspiron laptop, I also encounter no problem. It also does not occur when I connect directly to the router with an ethernet cable.

I ran HijackThis both before and after stopping the DWL-G650 adapter. There was absolutely no difference in the log files. This problem has paralyzed my laptop; I simply cannot use it with this adapter in place. Should I return the adapter and get another, or is this problem likely to occur with any PCMCIA wireless adapter?

I have also had a similar problem. My services.exe goes up to 99% or so intermittently. I am running win2k pro as well and have a Linksys Wireless network card, and problems started when I installed it. I have scanned for NetSky virus and it was not detected, and of course the usual antivirus utilities and ad-aware, etc. etc. NOTHING gets picked up. As far as those programs are concerned my computer is clean. So what's the deal?!

I too have the DWL-650 and Dlink 624. However, I did not have any problems till I installed SP4. After SP4, everytime I boot, SERVICES locks 95% of CPU time and this continues for the first 10 mins. After that the laptop works perfectly. I also do not have this issue when I hibernate. It is only when I boot. I have absolutely no idea on how to get around this. Any help will apreciated.
Thanks, Hari

It's supposed to be caused by bad drivers. Check for updated drivers.

The problem is also addressed here:

Try downloading process explorer from sysinternals to try and find exactly what's causing the problem...

Ah! Are you using the HOSTS file for adblocking? If so, don't... Go back to the old HOSTS file. For some reason the adblocking HOST file caused services.exe to stall my comp for 30-60 seconds at a time every now and then.

I have the same problem .. started about 5 days ago. I'm running WIN XP Pro SP1 current patchlevel (not SP2). nt Authrity shutdown message also appears during this, and the cpu is pegged at near 100% making it impossible to correct. I have a 3gz 800mz FSB machine and it runs like $HIT! Restoring the O/S is out of the question. There is only 1 services.exe running .. it is the only one on the file system and all virus and adware scans have cleaned the machine. I picked up a few trojans in the scan using nod32 (Norton did not find these!). Now all is clean .. I also downloaded 15 different netsky and other work variant specific scanners from various vendors .. all came up with nothing. Registry cleaners are also negative. No changes have been made to the machine prior to the start of this behavior.

HEEEELLLLLLPPP

I've got exactly this problem after I installed the "supertrick" HOSTS file coming with Kazaa Lite K++ 2.4.5.9 and running EMule (not simultaneously with Kazaa). When EMule isn't running - no problem. There must be too much traffic with emule that chokes services.exe + big(?) HOSTS file.

After replacing the HOSTS file with an older version of supertrick, everything works back to normal!!!

The HOSTS file coming with 2.4.5.9 is OK by itself because it causes problems only on my DSL PC with Windows 2000SP4. It doesn't cause any problems on a WinXP T1.
