| DEP Blocks Video Viewing | Configuration: |
I have just installed XP Service Pack 2 and it has caused problems accessing my videos within a folder containing my MPEG and QuickTime videos.
When I double-click the folder with the videos in, a message then pops up from Windows Explorer and reads: "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.."
The error reoprts signature reads: "AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 60.2900.2180 ModName: unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000"
I could access the folder before the XP2 update without any problems. It happens everytime I want to view what videos are in that folder.
Additional Comments: My PC is up-to-date with drivers, virus free, degragged, thoroughly scanned all disks for error. Also scanned for spyware and adware.
The videos aren't currupt or incompatible. The only way of viewing them is by opening my Windows Media 10 Player and selecting the file required.
Thanks in advance.

Re: DEP Blocks Video Viewing by Anonymous Ghost on January 09th, 2005 10:52:17 PM What is happening is windows explorer enters into the area of ram set off for your "specially privaleged" processes. DEP shuts it down as if it were something BAD |
Re: DEP Blocks Video Viewing by Anonymous Ghost on February 27th, 2005 06:58:24 PM I get the same problem, it happens when WMP attempts to preview the video files - turning off DEP (/noexecute=alwaysoff in boot.ini) does fix the problem. However it would be nice to be able to use DEP (only available in XP SP2 on Athlon64), so I would like to find out what codec is causing the prob. I have already removed the old divx codec |
Re: DEP Blocks Video Viewing by Anonymous Ghost on May 31st, 2005 08:37:41 AM I had the same issue when I set up my new AMD64 3400+ with XP SP2.
I realize that I can not click on folders with AVI,MPG and either shortcut to that folders. DEP protection stopped explorer.
I HAVE FOUND THE CAUSE AND FIX IT.
The problem is caused by software bugs in the SHELL CONTEXT EXTENSIONS that are loader by explorer. When they conflict each other and corrupt memory, DEP stop explorer prior it cold cause the OS corruption. That's good. It was a nightmare to find the conflicting extensions in REGEDIT until I have found a marvellous utility freeware, that shows all the installed extension and let's you to ENABLE/DISABLE tham and do the test to find the buggy one. You can find at: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/shellexview.html
So I tried and.... SURPRISE ! It was WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 10 Thumbnail Image extension extractor. Just disable it and all works ! I had a similar problem in the past with an ID3 tag extractor for .mp3 extension.
I will leave DEP active, in ordert to have signs that a software is buggy... |
