Crashed my os... help?!?!???Configuration:
Winlogin.exe unable to find component is first error when booting up, also says services.exe unable to find component when loading, and says that shlwapi.dll was not found.

This is what happened,

I'm not computer guru at all, and we've had problems with this system ever since we got it. My husband watches the baseball games on mlb. com, every now and again the pop up won't come up for the play by play, and the only way I've been able to get it to do so is to do a system restore to the last time that it worked.

Last night, while doing the system restore, the computer completely froze in the middle of it, and I turned it off. When I tried to reboot it, it comes to a black screen with a box that says on top: Winlogin.exe unable to find component, then inside the box it sayst SHLWAPI.dll was not found. It only gives you an ok button, so I hit enter, and the next box pops up and says the same thing inside, but at the top it says Services.exe unable to find component. When I hit enter again, it tries to reboot again and the same thing happens over and over.

I had to create a new partition and upload the OS again in order to get online and figure out how to fix this. I'm really hoping you can help me get back to using the original partition, because obviously we lost alot of stuff on the computer.

Help, please!!!

I'm SOOOO discouraged, Not at all impressed with Dell since we've had this one, I hope you can help. I thought of trying to do another system restore now that I can get it booted with the new partition, but I'm scared to do anything else to it! We really can't afford to take it in to a shop. Thanks in advance for anything you can suggest.

I looked at performing a system restore, but it won't let me, because its only working off this partition and I have no history to go to....

Hmm..
Are you able to access the older partition from My Computer? It should show up as drive.

I can't get it to boot with the older partition, when I boot up it basically asks me which partition I want to use, I'm not skilled enough to know how to access it, how do I do that?

Yes... ok, I see what your saying, it is there. Not sure which is which though, now. How do I tell which one is the old one and which one is the new one? And can I repair it from there?

Good that you found it. Now go to start > run. type 'cmd' and press enter.
in the window that opens you will see a path.. something like 'X:\Documents and Settings\Username'

Tell me that path, and also tell me the name of the two drives you see in 'My Computer'

Great F drive is your new partition and C drive is the old one.
Double click on C drive and navigate your way through. Copy any files or data you need to the F drive.

If you get some errors while copying data you need to follow the step highlighted at http://www.jkg.in/37-permission-denied-data-recovery-in-windows-xp.htm and copy the data to F drive.

Your 'My Documents', 'Desktop', 'My Pictures' of the older drive will be accessable thru 'c:\documents and settings\username'

The easiest route for you would be to back up all of the files and what have you on the 1st partition and then to just erase that partition(reformat) I'd also suggest just backing up your partition and reformatting the entire thing so you only have 1 partition again. For a non techie, this is the easiest way to go.
