Internet Explorer & Windows Explorer (desktop shortcuts)Configuration:
Everything was working fine on the computer (Win XP), and then all hell broke loose. I downloaded a video clip from a friend off msn, and then after watching it, I could no longer load up Internet Explorer, or Windows explorer. None of the folder shortcuts on my desktop work anymore (I'm assuming b/c windows explorer is the program that's used for exploring folders). Now I don't know if the video file is the cause, but it happened after watching the video.

In any case, when I click on the IE icon, nothing happens, and when I click on windows explorer or any other folder shortcuts on the desktop, all the icons and even the taskbar disappears for a couple of seconds, and then reappears.

I have a lot of work and valuable IE Bookmarks/Favourites, so I can't afford to lose the ability to browse for my files. I'm using netscape right now to type this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

edit: I've also tried to do a System Restore to the previous day. It didnt work, and I haven't unrestored it.
Operating System : Microsoft Windows XP

Nothing is lost. Nescape/Mozilla can import favorites from Internet Explorer, and Microsoft provides favtool.exe, which works both ways.

But these are only temporary solutions. Your long-term problem is a hijacker, Trojan, or Virus that's wedged its way into your desktop. This can happen because Internet Explorer is an integrated part of Windows. I can almost guarantee that you have Active Desktop turned on, and a hijacker running.

I'm having the same problems as everyone else on this thread, and I have XP Home Edition. I can't open any file on my computer, as in anything that is a file, not just "My Computer" (I can open installed programs though). So, I've tried to download Hijack This, but when I do, I can't open it anywhere. I've tried puting the folder in various places (C:/ drive, Program Files, Desktop, etc...)

Well, I downloaded the new version of Ad Aware, ran it again, and it found about 13 components, and spy-bot found 1 red component (Alexa).
and....EVERYTHING SEEMS TO WORK AGAIN!

When I ran Hijackthis again, there was only ONE line that was no longer there:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BCF96FB4-5F1B-497B-AECC-910304A55011} - C:\WINDOWS\hhU.dll
