Re: Winlogon.exe - Application Error then Blue Screen by Anonymous Ghost on October 09th, 2004 08:21:07 AM Since last May, I've had a winlogon.exe - application error. If I ok to terminate or cancel to debug, I just blue screen and have to reboot. I just pull it out of the way and continue working. I've loaded Service Pack 2, which does nothing to fix this problem. It's a real PITA. Can anyone help me???? Please????? |

Re: Winlogon.exe - Application Error then Blue Screen by Anonymous Ghost on December 06th, 2004 04:08:20 PM I have just been through this one and should you find it interesting, these are my findings:-
Cause - probably adware (in my case)Look2Me, a very persistent and nasty piece of work which tries to contact www.ad-w-a-r-e.com
What to look for - *.dll's that are updated every time you login
Where to look - \WINNT\System32
These dll's attach themselves to WinLogon, Rundll32 and Windows Explorer, such that if they are removed or disabled, thus making their companions less capable, they return the above message (WinLogon or Explorer in my case)
Solution: This is NOT seen as a virus although Symantec have ackowledged it as dangerous. I have just downloaded Ad-Aware SE from www.lavasoftusa.com and it has found all the critical files that seem to be causing the problem.
But before downloading Ad-Aware I had already disabled the activity of this pernicious software. Ad-Aware has just allowed me to clean up completely.
Hope this helps those that have been frustrated by this bug. |
Re: Winlogon.exe - Application Error then Blue Screen by Anonymous Ghost on December 07th, 2004 01:49:19 PM Further to the last comment. The size of the files to look for is around 220Kb. They will be hidden as System files, so you will need to turn on "view" hidden files in the Explorer. In the Registry look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\Notify. In there you will find an entry that changes its name, but has the name of one of the files that you find in the %SYSTEM% (WINNT\System32) directory. You will probably have no alternative but to reboot the system from the CD and execute a repair. First reboot a couple of times to check which entry in the registry is getting altered and then you will see the file name to delete.Reboot the system in repair mode, and delete the file from the %SYSTEM% directory. If you have the correct file you will be free of the pest. You will have other files lying around associated with this as no software that I have found can spot. As the file names change and the registry entry changes I cannot be more specific or give a list of files. You must just observe the behaviour and then take the action. Good Luck. |

Re: Winlogon.exe - Application Error then Blue Screen by Anonymous Ghost on June 21st, 2006 08:10:03 PM Good site! It is very creative and includes a wealth of information. |
SOLVED Winlogon.exe - Application Error then Blue Screen by Anonymous Ghost on July 06th, 2006 09:56:59 AM It's simple, just download hijack.exe and killbox.exe. Run Hijack. Look for these types of process in the hijack log:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: arergiti - arergiti.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: bdicjulx - bdicjulx.dll (this is only an example, it will not be the same dll files in your case, just put the types of these trojans for your understanding) kill all these dll files comes under the heading "Winlong notify" using killbox (use the option 'delete on reboot')..and it is simple as that...nothing to worry. |
