booting problem by Anonymous Ghost on February 15th, 2003 03:55:52 AM If you have an AMD XP CPU, make sure your BIOS settings have the multiplier at least as high as the "nominal" setting (unless you connect the L1 bridges on the chip). For instance, the 2000+ requires a multiplier of at least 13. It will automatically set 13 or greater to the nominal value, 12.5. Anything less than 13 will cause your symptoms of having to turn the power supply on and off in order to boot. |

Computer Restarting Problem by supersharp on March 12th, 2003 10:17:21 AM About a week ago my computer started to randomly retart about once a day. This problem slowly started to get worse and worse as it restarted more oftern. Then yesterday it resatarted again, but after it did a disc check (due to the untimely restart) it restarted again not even letting me onto my XP OS. Now it will not let me on at all. If I cancel the disc check, it restarts. I have tryed going into safe mode but before it goes in it freezes. I have tred the 'Start your computer to the last settings that worked' option, and well, yes, it restarts. I am really baffled to what could be the problem to this. I have not added any new hardware recently, and I am currently running on my other hard drive installed on the computer with Win 98 on with no problems... Please could anyone give me some advice as all my college work is on the drive and I would be very upset if I had to format... :o( |

XP Professional Rebooting constantly by Anonymous Ghost on March 29th, 2003 02:46:01 PM As the title states, I am having a constant reboot/system lockup problem in XP Professional. I am not sure as to whether it is a problem with the OS as even when I tried to run Memtest86 to test my memory, the PC still kept locking up and rebooting even though I had not logged on to Windows. I have already tried at least three repair installation and two fresh installs, but this behavior is still there. Sometimes it even locks up when I'm in the BIOS. My specs :
Compaq Presario 5108US
-1.2 Ghz Athlon
-384MB RAM (although the computer only recognizes 376MB. I had a 164-Memory Size Error problem before and so I set the POST test to Full Boot. It still only acknowledges 376MB but it does bring up the 164 Memory Size error anymore)
-S3 ProSavage Display Adapter
- AC 97 Sound Card
Any and all forms of assistance would be highly appreciated. |

booting up problems by Anonymous Ghost on May 03rd, 2003 02:14:15 PM Over the past week I have had problems booting up my computer. I try for the better part of a half hour and keep shutting off the computer and then on again. Somehow during one of these trys, it finally boots up. I left the computer on for several days to keep from having to try this again, but finally shut it down for a few hours. The motor sounds a bit "tired" when starting cold, but, would re-boot if it was already running. Any suggestions? |

Win ME boot errors by Anonymous Ghost on May 14th, 2003 04:57:58 PM After a hard lock-up while online, I force shutdown my Compaq Pressario 1200 laptop. Upon reboot, about 2 seconds after Windows Millenium Edition began to load, the message "Please wait while Windows updates your configuration files. This may take a few moments." It hung at that point and no further drive activity ever occured. I tried safe mode with the same result. I tried step-by-step confirmation, and selected "No" to loading everything (including the registry) and still got the message immediately after the system loaded the ifshlp.sys driver. Is there a boot disk that will circumvent this hang? All thoughts welcome. Thanks. |

my computer doesn't boot, and it says some command missing? by xxzeroxcoolxx on May 28th, 2003 04:54:20 PM hi, when i turn on my computer it goes throught he normal steps, then when it gets to loading windows 98 it goes to a screen saying that their is a missing or corrupted file command.com then it says (e.g., C:WINDOWSCOMMAND.COM) if you could help me with this i would be really really happy......thank you |
re: my computer doesn't boot, and.... by Anonymous Ghost on June 02nd, 2003 07:41:25 PM Sounds like you may need to reinstall the operating system to restore the corrupted file (if it is in fact corrupt). If the system will let you boot in safe mode you could try running scan disk. I doubt you can get in with a corrupt command.com though. Just some thoughts. I haven't tried this, but , if you can boot from a floppy you may be able to start windows from there, then scan it. Good luck from a noob! |
Now my computer wont even start!!! by xxzeroxcoolxx on June 06th, 2003 12:12:21 AM Before my cmputer said that the command file isa corrupted or missing and now it is not even saying that, it just goes strait to the windows 98 booting and then turns off...this is really irritating me since it is my sisters computer and i can't even get into the desktop to make a boot disk, and i lost the old boot disk and windows 98 se cd a long time ago... If any 1 would have idea about how i could fix my computer e-mail me at XxZeroXCoolxX@aol.com thank you very much for taking ur time to read this... |

Memory Check Problem by Anonymous Ghost on September 14th, 2003 01:46:13 PM by dave194 on September 23rd, 2003 03:26:39 PM Check the seating of the ram memory chips, should be overlock clips both ends. Since you have changed a card and back again may have disturbed the seating.
If this fails take out RAM leaving one in, try start up again - if necessary replace with the other RAM etc. may have faulty RAM. good luck and place the chips on antistatic bag and hold on to the metal case to discharge your static. |

Presario 5108us models by Anonymous Ghost on October 09th, 2003 08:07:03 AM Everyone that has trhe problem of freezing up, you HAVE to use pc100/133 CL3, very important, you get CL3. most memeory is CL2, so you have to check, to make usre it is...Second, PC133, will NOT run properly, if you have the system in 100mhz mode. YOu have to upgrade the CPU to a 133mhz cpu, the max, i know of, is a AMD 1400 running at 266mhz, then change the jumper on the mobo, to run accordingly. |

Toshiba Laptop and Memory by Anonymous Ghost on November 08th, 2003 01:51:35 PM I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 laptop and the following has happened and it has me baffled.
The machine came with 128 meg of Samsung RAM
I purchased a 256 meg stick and installed it and it worked until I removed the ram and placed it in another slot.
The computer just sits it wont post not warnings no nothing just the light comes on to indicate that the computer is turned on and the screen backlight comes on. (if you install a wrong ram module in this machine it comes up with a warning just after the point that it hangs at)
So I installed the original 128 meg stick and it too produces the same result.
I remove another stick from another machine and the computer boots up and runs fine. So I purchased another stick of ram and it all ran fine. I then removed this stick to try another combination of ram modules to find the same result as above.
I am sure that this is not static electicity as the original 128 meg stick runs in another old pentium 2 laptop that I have and it works fine and I deliberately held one hand on the serial port (metal at the back of the machine) to earth myself to the machine while I changed the ram both times.
Im sure that if I buy another new stick of ram it will work fine until I remove it again.
Yes I did disconnect the power and removed the battery when installing the new ram
Help this is getting expensive
THanks in advance |
