windows protection error by Anonymous Ghost on April 15th, 2003 08:32:59 PM Win98.
I tried a number of suggestions involving scanreg /restore & /fix.
But what solved the issue was removing the new (6 months old) memory chip that I had added.
For some reason it had just stopped working and was causing this error.
It may be that the scanreg stuff also fixed something, but I can't prove that. |
What to do if this is happening on NEW INSTALL by Anonymous Ghost on April 22nd, 2003 02:45:40 PM If this occurs repeatedly after installing a fresh copy of winows (the systems halts when trying to load windows 98 and says "Windows Protection error. You must restart the machine." and "C:WINDOWSSystemvmm32.vxd missing/unable to load".
If you just boot into safe mode once it seems to resolve the issue during initial install. This seems to happen before it installs the majority of device drivers- the first of the Win 98 reboots.
Unfortunately in my occupation (I.T.) we still have to deal with the occasional Win 95 or Win 98 machine, personally I see no use for 95/98 considering it isnt even a real operating system- still just a dos shell. Best solution- get a real OS like Win 2K or XP- (Hell, even Mac OSX is better and more stable than 95/98/ME) |

"windows protection error" with no other message by Anonymous Ghost on June 26th, 2003 04:12:14 PM just got this repeatedly trying to reboot. it's a very *hot* day here in UK. checked out CPU temp (Gigabyte easy tune)- found that it's way above the normal and so dropped side off case, switched off power and left for few sec, PC now boots fine... could this problem be related to overtemperature at RAM or CPU ?
Will experiment with running CPU at lower clock settings - perhaps when it cools down I shall have fewer problems ?? ian |

Win 95 Freezes by Anonymous Ghost on July 20th, 2003 04:33:35 PM Reformatted a small hard drive, no partitions, installed win95 without a problem, but when it went to restart itself it freezes at boot up. If I boot to the "a" drive and then access the "c" drive, open the windows directory and type win I get the blue screen which says VFAT error. Tried everything Microsoft suggested about the ifship.sys file and remarking out the maxfilecache=4096 file(even though that file wasn't in my system.ini). But so far nothing is working. This drive was in an old 486. Is there a FAT issue I'm missing? Any advice welcome!Replies can go to bareboard@aol.com if preferred. |

Re: Windows Protection Error by Anonymous Ghost on November 27th, 2003 08:33:12 PM About "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer".

Re: Windows Protection Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 12th, 2003 07:10:24 AM When "windows protection error..." occures after fresh installation of new systems or hardware devices THE PROBLEM IS THE OVERHEATING INSIDE THE CASE, WHICH AFFECTS EITHER THE CPU&MB OR THE MEMORY MODULE. After replacing the coolers the system works properly.of course, there could be a driver problem, but in 99% of cases i found a hardware malfunction. So, my advice is to contact your vendor and claim the warranty of these products.sorry for my english, but i hope that my advice will solve your problems.P.S. my job is SIS manager, so i could see a lot of pc's having this problem. |

Re: Windows Protection Error by Anonymous Ghost on December 18th, 2003 06:46:45 AM Two tips:
1) If you are have problems with IFSMGR causing Windows Protection Errors, check your config.sys - it should include the line DEVICE=C:WINDOWSIFSHLP.SYS
2) Using the window configuration utility (Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information ... then ... Tools>System Configuration Utility) you can do a Selective Startup. The selective Startup allows you to knock out various parts (including all) of the configuration components, from the boot sequence. Assuming that by removing all of the components, your PC boots cleanly, you may then re-introduce various components and quickly identify the root cause of a boot failure. (Once you have positively identified that the CONFIG.SYS causes the problem, test each line individually using REM.) |

Re: Windows Protection Error by Anonymous Ghost on March 09th, 2004 02:37:01 AM Came here from Google searching for a solution after experiencing problems similar to that in the original post (I'm amazed that this thread has been active for over a year!). I have a system with similar specs to that in the original post.
My problem with the message 'Windows Protection Error... " started last night (9th Mar 2004) after I'd tried using a utility that toggles ActiveSync on and off (I've had problems with the Activesync process freezing my machine on shutdown). I've noticed that when I restart the computer, the PC thrashes the a: drive for a bit. I managed to shut down the PC once last night without the message and that was when I had a floppy disk in the a: drive.
I am going to try some of the suggestions I've seen here and will post the results - successful or not... |

Re: Windows Protection Error by Anonymous Ghost on March 12th, 2004 11:08:38 PM windows protection errors are usually only seen on laptops of the older generation when trying to use "copies" of windows operating systems, like on install, if your using a pirated copy, like one that was burned using regular music burning software or the files were just highlighted & copied over that would be a first thought, nero solves this, nero will reproduce software cd's flawlessly |

Re: Windows Protection Error by Anonymous Ghost on August 25th, 2004 08:15:16 AM i get the same problem on two different machines doing different things
1: starting game 'the sims' installed since more than a year, nothing special installed recently - blue screen of death with a vxd-error - escape - rebooting properly shutting down windows 98se - black screen of sudden but sure death telling: 'windows protection error. you need to restart your computer' - always again - safe mode starting possible
2: 3 days later on another computer, other hardware, after installing a new game, not rebooting windows, starting it: same procedure
the first machine ran fine with w98se for over 2 years now and could be renewed anyway, what i did after finding no solution in all forums i visited, but the second computer: no way!
i extracted 4 files from the newest .cab-file located in windows\sysbckup containing system.dat, system.ini, user.dat and win.ini and cool, here we go again
hope this helps!

Re: Windows Protection Error by Anonymous Ghost on August 25th, 2004 01:33:01 PM i had the same problem. "while initializing device vkd". its caused by a power failure. what you need to do is insert the win 98 boot cd and type the following command on the dos prompt to run scandisk d:\win98\scandisk.exe/all.
this should fix the problem.
Hope this helps
