Well first option is to take a floppy, insert it into floppy drive. Right click, the floppy drive in My Computer and click Format. Choose the option the you wish to copy system files only. Also make sure the box of 'Copy system files' is checked. This will create a bootable floppy for you.
It will be a good idea to copy from 'command' directory inside your windows directory:
- format.exe to format hard disk, just incase anything goes wrong and drive need formatting again.
- fdisk.exe, in case you wish and partition your hdd.
- scandisk.exe, to check drive for errors.
The second option, (easier one) is to simply copy the contents of the folder EBD lying in the 'command' directory under your windows directory.
Make sure the contents of the folder are copied and not the folder, that is, files should be a:\autoexec.bat instead of a:\EBD\autoexec.bat |

You swapped the HD with a known working hd (i.e. one that worked in another computer) and nothing happens? No error messages? nothing? Just sits and stares at you?
You have a motherboard problem, either a card is causing a conflict, your BIOS has been subject to hostile action, or the mobo itself has just decided to give up the ghost. First thing to do is yank *everything* from the system. Every card, every cable, everything. Even pull the memory chips. Boot the system. You should get a couple of code beeps for no memory, no video, etc. Insert each item back into the system one at a time - memory first, then video, then hard drive. If your system is functioning, but has a conflict or bad part, this is the only way to eliminate it. Examine all cables for bent pins, exposed/crimped wires, etc. --- or, take it to your local computer shop; if you have no technical expertise, the money spent is worth more than the headache you will experience. |

I have windows 98 - I went to use my computer the other day and it started up as normal until the windows 98 screen flashed the second time and then it gives me some selections and I can only start in safe mode. It appears that I no longer have an E: drive (cd) either. It is a computer that I use to keep books and does not have internet. The only thing that I can think that I have used the drive for is to view vacation pictures but I had looked at the same disk before and the computer worked fine after. What could be wrong and how would I go about fixing the problem? |

I bought a used laptop from the internet and now its having problems. I have no documentation for it except the front and back cover of the windows 98 license, which means i DO have my product number. I totalled my HD and need to reinstall 98, but I have no disk and microsoft wont help because its "out of warranty". Please, any assisstance would be greatly appreciated. |

I reinstalled Windows 98 on a computer and replaced the CDRom with a CDRW. Now I get the following message. Missing 3v.dll on Windows 98 CD-Rom. Then when I go to Internet Explorer it says "Not enough memory to continue. Close down one or more applications and no applications are open. What can I do to fix this problem? Some windows files were deleted off of my computer...like WIN.com ...now whenever i turn on my computer i cant even get my computer to get past the starting up Windows, it gives me a space to type in a command but ive typed in everything from "Run" "Abort" "quit" but it would say i couldn't run this program in DOS mode. i cant even install anything because you cant install during the startup process..p.lease someone help it would be greatly appreciated |

my husband erased everything on the hard drive after he crashed it. we don't have a start up disk. I was able to find the toshiba companion disk. the system won't boot. I can get the dos prompt. |

hi i tried installing winds xp from winds 98 and when installing unable to copy file cdrom.exe to winds nt which it dont have on it also no sound installed on my laptop dont know why can u help and the seetings are messed up also |

Hi,
I accidentally deleted sys.ini. Now when I try to start my computer, it shows the window98 screen for a bit then tells me that sys.ini is missing and that I have to run Windows Setup again and to press any key to conitnue and when I do it shuts down. So when I restart, I press the control key to enter set up, I press A to boot up from A but it then tells me to remove all disk and media... what can I do? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

I tried to play a game on a used windows 98 computer, it stopped in the middle of the installation. I tried to start in safe mode, but I get an error message that says error loading mouse drv. need in install windows. I do have a start-up disk that I made, but I don't have the installation-cd. |

Help... I tried to reinstall my win98 restore disks. The disks are corrupt and now when I try to install again...I am prompted with "no operating system" I have an original 98 disk but I cant boot I dont have a startup disk that will recognize the cdrom. How I get a startup disk that will let me reinstall the win98..

I was given a system gateway e-3400 and the software was supposed to be good. I have twenty boot disks and no real win98. I have started by formating c: and fdsiking it. So the next step is to get the cd d: drive to load a good version of win98. I have lost this disk and asked MS and Gateway to replace it they both same to not care if I reinstall it or not.
Should I buy one used or install something else? Win98 was the one installed. |

You can reformat your hard drive using the win 98 cd rom, it contains the same files as the start up disk you are trying to create. Setup will format your drive. |
