Re: Oracle 8i on Windows XP by nibbleguru on January 15th, 2002 06:58:27 AM

Please give the proper TNS error you are getting.

Likely errors are:

Problem: Database not started.
Soltion: Start database

Problem: TNSNAMES.ORA and SQLNET.ORA not correctly configured.
Solution: Use SQL*NET Easy Configuration tool to repair the files or manually update them. Ensure you
are connecting to the correct SID.

Problem: Ora-01017 Invalid username/password
Solution: enter username/pwd properly

Problem: ORA-12154 Failure to resolve service name
Solution: Check you're typing in the correct SID or alternatively, if installed locally -- this may
be left blank. Additionally, ensure the database is *started*.

Problem: Listeners not running
Solution: In control panel, go to services and double-click. Check for entry such as OracleTNSListener
and check that it has a status of started. If not, click the start button.

Hope this helps

well if %oracle_home%ora811bin is in your path then u can start it from a dos prompt. SQL*Plus the program itself sucks cuz you cant go back and change any typos u make.

install 8i on xp by Anonymous Ghost on October 07th, 2002 08:49:36 AM
there are couple of ways to get around the installation issue.
1. copy cd on to hd and rename Symcjit.dll. You should be able to start the installation.
2. get the oui patch(1507768) from oracle. Unzip it, rename the symcjit.dll and start the installation. point the source to the cd and should be able to start.

Oracle Service Problem by Anonymous Ghost on November 27th, 2002 07:35:06 AM
Hey guys,
I have Windows XP Home Edition and tried installing Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition on it. The SID i had given was DATABASE. It installed properly the first time, but when I changed the startup type for OracleServiceDATABASE to Manual and tried to start it, it would say "Starting" for its status, but it would not start for a long time. I uninstalled and reinstalled 8i and gave a different name, DB1, thinking that it would overwrite the earlier database. However, I ended up getting two services, OracleServiceDATABASE and OracleServiceDB1. Now both of these services try to start, and both of their status shows Starting, but nothing happens. How do I remove the multiple services with different SIDs? What should I do? my email address is peglin5@yahoo.com if anyone can help...thanks!
Re: Oracle Service Problem by Anonymous Ghost on November 29th, 2002 02:53:59 PM
Try to use svrmgrl instead of the service. Open command prompt. Type: svrmgrl connect internal startup.
It's not the way it should be, but it works on my machine (8i on XP Professional).
scott/tiger is not available but system/manager, sys etc. are still working.

Good luck.

CONNECTION PROBLEMS- 8i STANDARD EDITION (ora-01034 / ora-12560) by Anonymous Ghost on February 26th, 2003 04:43:24 PM
I GOT ORACLE 8i STANDARD EDITION TO WORK ON WINDOWS XP (COULDN'T GET PERSONAL EDITION TO WORK ON IT, TRIED EVERYTHING) BUT WHEN YOU RESTART THE COMPUTER & THEN TRY TO GO INTO SQL, FORMS OR REPORTS IT WON'T LET YOU CONNECT. THE REASON IS THAT ON THE PERSONAL EDITION YOU HAVE A "START DATABASE" OPTION THAT STARTS THE DATABASE FIRST & THEN YOU WON'T GET THE ora-01034 ERROR, BUT ON THE STANDARD EDITION YOU DON'T HAVE THIS "START DATABASE" OPTION. THEREFORE.........TWO OPTIONS WHEN YOU START/REBOOT (I PREFER OPTION 1)......

1. GO TO THE "svrmgrl" file (in a 'BIN' file - do a search for files if not sure where it is). Double-click on it and a dos_style prompt will open. Type "connect internal" (without the quotes!) and press enter. Then type "starup open". Then wait a short while and the database will be opened. You will then be able to connect to sql, etc without getting this error. It is a good idea to copy this file onto your desktop as a shortcut so that when you boot/restart you can access it straight away.

2. Via the start menu, programs, go to "Database Configuration Assistant" via 'Database Administration' - Choose 'Change Database Configuration', click next - click next again - after a short wait choose one of the options & click next - Then click Finish. Again if using this method it might be better to have it as a shortcut on the desktop.

BY THE WAY IF YOU ARE GETTING THE ora-12560 "PROTOCOL ADAPTER ERROR" THIS IS PROB DUE TO THAT YOU HAVENT GOT THE ORACLESERVICEORCL SET TO START AS "AUTOMATIC". GO TO YOUR "SERVICE FOLDER" (IN WINDOWS XP, RIGHT-CLICK ON THE 'MY COMPUTER' FILE AND CHOOSE 'MANAGE', THEN GO INTO 'SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS' AND THE GO INTO 'SERVICES' & SCROLL DOWN TO THE 'OracleServiceORCL' (That's what it's called on mine), DOUBLE-CLICK ON IT/CHOOSE IT AND CHANGE THE 'STARTUP TYPE' TO "AUTOMATIC". THEN WHEN REBOOTING YOU'LL PRBABLY GET THE ABOVE ERROR WHICH MEANS YOU NEED TO CONNECT YOURSELF ONTO THE DATABASE VIA ONE OF THE OPTIONS.

Running Oracle8i in WindowsXP by Anonymous Ghost on April 23rd, 2003 12:06:23 AM
when v install oracle8i under WindowsXP thenfor the first time it runs perfectly fine and after restarting it dosen't run..this is because the oracle service does not automatically instantiate the oracle database..for this we have to manually start the database..

1. start sql+ give user id as internal, password as oracle.

2. give the commnad.. startup at sql>

this will lead to the startup of the database...now

3. use the connect command to login with user userid..such as scott/tiger

hope this helps..remmeber u have to do this whenever the systems reboots...

creating views in Oracle by Anonymous Ghost on May 05th, 2003 06:47:03 AM
Can you pl. clarify me the following doubts.

1) If we selected 10000 rows from the select statement.
How we display (see) 30 rows(records) at a time on
the screen and then next 30 and so on. And If I want
to come back in the middle, to the sql prompt with out seeing all the
rows how it is possible. Tell me the command for that.

2) I am creating a view from two tables.
My boss told me to store that view in some 'xxx'
tablespace. Can we store the view in tablespace?
If it is, how can we do that (write Simple example).
If this is possible in only materialized views,
how can we do that.

3) Can we make index on views.

Thank you

Can't install Oracle 8i PE in Windows XP Home Ed. by d1lemon on July 21st, 2003 02:34:04 PM
I am trying to install Oracle 8i Personal Edition 8.1 in a Windows XP Home Ed. (SP1), 2.4 Ghz processor, 60GB HDD, 512MB RAM. The installation dies right after I click on the Install/Deinstall button. I have tried removing \hkey_local_machinesoftwareoracle, removing oracle services under \hkey_local_machinesystemCurrentControlSetXXXServices and renaming the files ociw32.dll and symjcjit.dll. I tried the installation again after rebooting the system and got an error with the java runtime environment. I tried searching for Sun's jdk 1.3.1 but is no longer available, instead I installed Sun's jre 1.4 and added the line Jrew=0x00080000 to the win.ini. Rebooted the system and tried to reinstall Oracle again to find myself back to square one: installation dies. (The previous instructions I followed I found at: http://www.comp.mq.edu.au/units/comp224/Oracle_Installation_Work_Arounds.htm).

Can someone help me on this please. Thank you.

About firewall and Oracle 8i on windows XP p4 pro by magoo on July 31st, 2003 09:01:15 AM
I have installed Oracle 8i on a notebook p4 pro with windows XP. I installed developer software in another oracle home. All services was fine and started. All listeners was fine and started. All configurations files (tnsnames.ora, listener.ora, snmp_ro, snmp_rw, sqlnet.ora) was fine in both directories ( net80 and orahome). But I still got
TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
TNS-00530: Protocol adapter error
32-bit Windows Error: 31

TNS: no listener

I checked services and listener was up!

I was thinking if problem was memory and I started to shutdown some aplications and trying to restart the listener via lsnrctl. When I shutdown zone alarm PRO 4( firewall software ) finally I can view status of the listener and I could connect to my database.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I restart computer and first shutdown zone alarm and the listener works fine!

hope it helps someone. It was two days of hell trying to find what was wrong with oracle!

You have to make sure the services logon as a batch job and logon as services is set to Administrator if you are loading as Administrator or your user sign which has Administrator rites.
If your machine is a Xeon or Pentium processor there are bugs in in the java which must be corrected. Also the JRE_Memory parameter in the oraparam file must be changed to -nojit - ms64m -mx128m.

invalid error in OCI call - oracle error with Centura SqlWindows by Anonymous Ghost on November 06th, 2003 02:24:05 PM
Using Oracle 8i with Centura. Get error "invalid argument in OCI call". Occurs when using a join between a table and a linked view with ROWID selected on the view. It only happens on certain machines running the application. It may have something to do with Win2K but I can't prove it. I think the problem is a dll file. What dll is this coming from? sqlora32.dll or ociw32.dll or what?

A Big Solution Just Follow me Gyz.....Leave it everything. by Anonymous Ghost on May 10th, 2004 06:19:56 PM
Q.Y Sql *Plus is not accepting user id and password in XP?
Solution:
1. Goto Database configuration Assistant, Create Database with Typical with the name (SID), after Finish.
2. Restart System.
3. Run (SVRMGRL) on cmd (command prompt) and dont close the window. just can do minimize.
4. then goto the Oracle application manager, then goto (Management Server) and press the right button. and add the Database name (SID) and ok or exit.
and try to login one time in (OAM) user: system, password: manager otherwise leave it.
5. Run SQL *Plus and apply user: Scott
and Password: tiger
and then every1 is invited this is my world.
If u like plz give me response. I'll feel good.

I have Oracle9i on Windows XP Home edition. I got it worked well for many months and have a huge amount of data in it. Later, I set the database and listener service to manual startup because I had to work on some other projects. And now, when I bring it up again manually, the database started fine and the listener went up well also. When I tried to connect via SQL Navigator the TNSLSNR.EXE crashed. I brought it up again and did a tnsping. Listener responded well only to crash about 2 seconds later. Please help. I need to set it up for a demonstration to my client urgently.

Re: Oracle 8i on Windows XP by Anonymous Ghost on January 31st, 2005 08:25:26 PM
Solution: If the error message "ORA-01034: Oracle not available" and/or "ORA-27101: Shared memory realm does not exist" appear, it means that your Personal Oracle8i database was not started. To start the database, start Windows Explorer, navigate to the C:\Orapo\Bin folder, and double-click svrmgrl.exe to start the Server Manager utility. Type: connect internal, and then type startup open; to start the database
