Maybe the music CD is copy protected and hence not opening using explorer.

In any case do try to run a 'CD Lens Cleaner' and see if software disks open properly or not.

Please update if the problem is fixed or still there after trying out these steps

If you have a CD that was made on a CD-RW at home, some CD-ROM drives lasers are not calibrated to read recordable CDs, whose surface is different that that of a facrtory pressed CD's. Put the CD in a CD-RW and it should work.

Hi,
I am having the same problem. I have NOrcent RW481. Initially it was reading and writing all types of CDs. After some install/uninstall I made related to NERO , my CD drive is not recognising home-made CD-RWs.I am just wandering for solution...
Re: CD ROm Drive not ready by Anonymous Ghost on September 09th, 2004 01:49:30 PM
I am running Win2K and have problems similar to those stated by others here. I have two CD drives; one is CDRW/DVD. Both used to read all types of files. Then several months ago, they just stopped working correctly.

They will both play audio CDs and will read CDs others and I have made with data backups on them or HTML files. But stick a Software CD in them (to install or fix something) and they act like there is no media in the drive. Cannot open in Explorer or otherwise. Asks if I want to format the disk.

I have been very busy so have had no time to track down the problem, but now I need to reinstall MS Publisher to get a newsletter done and seeking some solution.

I am concerned that it was a Windows update that caused the problem as I had a period of time when I was getting errors with explorer.exe and when a computer restart would prevent my anti-virus programs from reloading - those have been corrected and I can find no traces of any trojan or virus on my computer. And I have run several spyware programs - I followed all advice re tracking down what is starting up on my machine to make certain that was not the cause.

I have unintalled and reinstalled the devices with no change in results.

Just wanted you to know you are not alone.

I had similar problem with Nero that causes these symptoms. Uninstalling will help.

Now I got the same problem without Nero and I'm searching for solution. Does anyone has any knowledge?

Ok, I found the problem! Google Desktop Beta affected same problems with my Win2000. Uninstalling helped again.
D drive does not see CD disk by Anonymous Ghost on November 24th, 2004 01:42:30 PM
Using Windows ME:
When I open "My Computer" it shows the A drive, C drive, D drive ( CD rom ) etc.
When I put a Disk (cd-audio or program like HP installation disk) into the D drive and try to open, I get a pop up, saying to put a disk into the drive. I've checked the drivers, and it says that this device is working properly.
Any help as to where I go from here will be appreciated, Thanks Paul.
PS have a Happy Thanksgiving
