Floppy Drive error in Win2k ONLY!Configuration:
The floppy drive is behaving erroraneously.
1. I can read and write to the floppy disc without any problem FIRST TIME.
2. If I insert a second floppy after doing r/w operations on first one, same contents are displayed in the second one too.
3. If I try to access the files displayed, it will display a message saying that file doesnot exists, check the path.
4. If I insert a corrupted floppy in the first instance after boot, and then If I insert a good floppy disc, it will be displayed as corruped and I cant access a floppy disc untillI reboot the system.
5. Same floppy drive works absolutely fine when I access it in Linux. So this may not be a hardware problem.

Additional Comments:
I have Nortons antivirus and tried to access the drive afrter uninstalling the antivirus. But still it is giving the same problem. So, Norton's is also not causing much problem I think.

I just want to confirm surely if its a hardware problem or not, since you are able to access it in linux, chances for this are remote but can't be ruled out completely.
Do one thing, insert a new floppy into you drive. write some data onto it. Then access the floppy. When it says that floppy is corrupted, try accessing that floppy on some other floppy drive. If it works, then problem is in the Floppy Drive's Read head. But if you get an error, then there is a chance on write head of floppy being damaged. So for that write data on a blank floppy on some other pc and try reading it. If it reads correctly, that means your drive is not writing data correctly.

BTW, WAREZ/pirated version of Win2K may have this kind of problem ;)
Please Note! by vikubel on August 08th, 2002 03:37:21 AM
Thanks for the suggestion. Yesterday I tried to access the drive in another system and worked fine. So no R/W head problems. It should be a S/W problem and should be with Win2k. So any solution?

I am having the exact same problem! No clue how to fix it.
Update by Anonymous Ghost on September 24th, 2002 04:35:19 PM
Do this: Open Computer Manager
-Device Manager
-Select Floppy Disk Drives
-Click the Disable button & answer yes to the popup
-Click the Enable button to renable disk drive
Now you can use the drive again, but only ONCE! Not much of a fix.

Floppy error(s) during POST and WinXP set-up by Anonymous Ghost on March 02nd, 2003 01:25:59 AM
I am trying to install WinXP Pro using an Adaptec 29320LP host as the boot device. The system will POST fine, but gives a "floppy disk(s) fail 40" when "Boot Floppy Seek" is enabled in motherboard BIOS. I get as far as pressing F6 to load the 29320LP driver during Windows set up. After inserting the floppy and pressing enter, the floppy drive lights up, but Windows prompts "please insert the manufacturer-labeled disk into drive A." I have changed floppies (same story with USB FDD), cables, went to default setting in BIOS, etc. No luck either!
floppy drive problem in xp by Anonymous Ghost on March 07th, 2003 11:30:14 AM
Regarding your posted : floppy drive problem in xp
Did anyone ever get a solution?

I have 11 brand new systems with XP installed and have repeated but inconsistent erriors with floppies.
Errors range from “this disk is not formatted” even after using the same disk in the same machine only minutes before.
Or simple “insert floppy disk into A:” as if there was no disk.
I can however recover the data almost 100% of the time using EasyRecovery Pro, So it appears the data remains intact.
We are an internet café so it’s a real pain in the backside.
Cheer,
Dan
win2K floppy lockup by Anonymous Ghost on March 11th, 2003 07:26:18 PM
The floppy disk errors (not formatted, "insert disk" when one is inserted, disk failure after 4 minutes of seek time etc.) in win 2K must be Bills way of saying he doesn't want us to be able to store information remotely any more. I struggled with this for some 8 hours before I found out it's a win2K problem.
Hey retards by Anonymous Ghost on March 15th, 2003 08:41:37 PM
Stop blaming Microsoft because you are stupid. They are hardware issues. It's not MS fault that the floppy drive is an old piece of crap and that the I/O of them is just as flakey. Not all manufacturers follow standards just to make them cheaper (we are talking 5 to 10 cents cheaper per unit here) and the end user ends up with a dodgy floppy drive with which they then proceed to blame the software company for making it now work.

Heres an idea, don't be a tight arse and get a decent floppy drive like a SONY or Mitsubishi. It may be a whole $2 more and then you will find out the difference between cheap and quality.

Everyone bitches and moans about this and that and everytime I help them it turns out to be cheap hardware.
2K floppy error by Anonymous Ghost on March 18th, 2003 10:39:55 PM
Interestingly enough, the floppy problem (i.e. disk not formatted errrors and no disk in drive errors) hit me hard after reinstalling two 2K systems after slicking their hard drives (due to virus recovery). These machines worked fine for two years with these same operating systems, but they were UPGRADED to 2K. After I did new clean 2K installs, yes, the floppies don't work. Hope that helps you, it doesn't help me much. If someone can, please post a message!
Floppy in Win2k reads first time by Anonymous Ghost on March 22nd, 2003 12:36:27 AM
Hi, I'm having the same problem. It reads the first diskette and then any other disk I put shows the contents of the first one. In the same day, I tested three different Os. WinMe: No problems. WinXp: All Ok. Win2k installed twice, repeat the problem.
If it is a hardware problem It shouldn't work in any Os at all.
I think NEC is not a cheap one, maybe old, but never had problems.
This win2k it's from kazaa, an ISO of 378.447.872 bytes, check the version, maybe It's corrupted.
No solutions yet...
Maybe buying original Os??
2K floppy hang by Anonymous Ghost on March 23rd, 2003 01:26:16 AM
I've got the 2K floppy hang on 3 machines all upgraded to 2K. One machine I've reinstalled 2K 4 times, and attempted a NT4 reinstall (the original OS) which failed so far. I purchased a new Belkin floppy PNP floppy to test the hardware theory, and still the floppy fails. For this to happen on 3 machines after upgrading to 2K means it's more than hardware. The test machine is an ASUS Pentium III 500 w/512K RAM. It should be able to handle the load, but no. The symptoms point, incredibly enough, to 2K affecting the BIOS, or somehow crashing the mainboard floppy handling capability. I really need help with this, it's been about three weeks down on all 3 computers.
floppy not formatted by Anonymous Ghost on March 24th, 2003 05:20:44 AM
when i try to open the floppy formatted on win 95/98 or preformatted, ERROR:Disk not formatted appears. The only solution i found was to format the disk on win xp and then use it on win 95/98/xp. it will work on all three system. see whether it work. If it worked, inform me on

Do not try to be smartass, if you do not know what the solution is.

It is definitely the problem with win2k OS. How come the same floppy drive we have been using for 3 years all of a sudden have problem when using different OS.

Even when different Service Pack are installed.

microsoft needs to solve this, as they created it
Floppy - disk format by Anonymous Ghost on April 04th, 2003 09:14:44 AM
I also have seen the problem of floppy disks being accessible on a WIN9x machine but not on an XP machine. We have both where I work and people bring in disks from home. The disk is fine, accessible, and its properties shows it having a FAT file system. I put the same disk into an XP machine and it tells me that the disk is not formatted. The properties shows the file system as RAW so XP is obviously not recognizing the formatting. In particular, today I formatted that disk on the XP machine, it then showed a FAT file system and was accessible. I put that disk into the Win98SE machine and it was accessible. I formatted the disk (full format, not quick) in the Win 98 machine, and this time it was accessible from the XP machine. This is NOT a hardware issue. It is a software issue that I can find no good explanation for anywhere I look. I would love to see this explained. Why drives themselves may not show up, I also have no answer for, but have not done an upgrade to XP, and honestly wouldn't.

Please insert disk... by Anonymous Ghost on April 16th, 2003 10:08:28 AM
Both my cd-wr and floppy went at the same time and both come up with the same thing. Mr. Gates had agreed with the music industry to make a program that would stop anyone from downloading music and copying it onto a cd. Apparently, he has backstabbed his bread and butter customers. Thanks for the memories Bill.
Floppy access problem in Win2K by Anonymous Ghost on April 16th, 2003 10:37:17 AM
Yes, that's a purely software issue. I can explain this conclusion. When I tried to access a floppy in Win2K system, it couldn't be read. When it happened with several floppies, which were fine when accessed from other systems, I had to doubt the hardware first and afterwards I found the hardware to be allright. Then, I did a trick: I booted that machine from a Win98 boot CD, accessed the floppy from command prompt, and WOW! it worked fine. Since then I'm giving the same treatment for all the floppies which couldn't be read from Win2K. It's again Microsoft, the culprit.
Floppy problem in Win2K solved! (for me) by Anonymous Ghost on April 18th, 2003 01:51:07 AM
I had the same problem. Floppy's would boot normally; Win98 and Linux would access the floppy drive; but Win2K would not. Tried everyting, even zeroed the complete disk. In the end, upgrading to BIOS version 1016 solved the problem. Now back to rebuilding my disk...

Floppy problem due to BIOS? by Anonymous Ghost on April 20th, 2003 02:11:49 PM
I tried to access my floppy (with the "format" problem under W2K) on the same machine with a W-ME. This worked without any problems. Thus, I think, the problem in general is a W2K problem, not necessarily a BIOS problem (concrete case from today excluded). Any comments or further ideas? (I have a Asus A7M266)
Floppy problem due to BIOS? (Comment) by Anonymous Ghost on April 20th, 2003 02:24:45 PM
Actually, I think it is in the combination W2K-BIOS. I solved the problem by updating the BIOS of my A7V333 motherboard (see above). Before, I could access the floppy from Win98 and from Linux, but not from W2K - usually, that is; sometimes, unpredictably, I got at least a directory listing. My guess is that it is a timing issue. In any case, it must be something between W2K and the BIOS that is to blame. Whether the bug is in W2K or the BIOS, or perpaps both, I have no way of knowing.
BTW, has the previous poster upgraded to the latest BIOS and is (s)he still experiencing problems?
Floppy problem due to BIOS? (answer on comment) by Anonymous Ghost on April 20th, 2003 03:26:46 PM
No, I did not upgrade - I just checked the features of available updates, which, to my feeling, will not solve the problem. I have Bios Rev 1004A, the newest is 1007. I would try to update if everything else fails. Any comments? Thanks! You may reply to walter @ kuhn-im-netz.de
floppy problem w2k by Anonymous Ghost on April 21st, 2003 07:42:03 AM
I am a microsoft trained systems engineer and have also experienced this floppy access problem with w2k, I have gone through all the previous fault diagnosis procedures and still have this intermittent fault on a clients pc. As yet I have found no solution, if I do I will post it.....It is definitely a software/bios problem although I would tend to lean towards the software being at fault as I have upgraded the bios already.
RESOLUTION by Anonymous Ghost on April 21st, 2003 02:01:44 PM
CAUSE
This problem occurs on disks that do not contain a media descriptor byte in the BIOS parameter block (BPB) of the boot sector. Some older preformatted floppy disks do not contain a media descriptor byte. Older product disks may also not have the media descriptor byte.

The media descriptor indicates the type of medium currently in a drive. With MS-DOS and Windows 95, you do not have to set the media descriptor byte. Therefore this problem does not occur with these older operating systems.

The media descriptor byte is located in the BPB of the boot sector at offset 21 (15h) and in the first byte of each FAT on the disk.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, re-format the floppy disk with Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;140060
Still that problem / media descriptor by Anonymous Ghost on April 22nd, 2003 02:26:48 AM
Concerning the solution, it does not work for me. Formatting on W2K results after nearly eveything is done in an error (on any disc I try).
Also, this problem just came up some weeks before. This discs had been read on the system without problems in the last year.
So, to my personal feeling, W2K has another problem..

Still that problem - FUNNY Feature by Anonymous Ghost on April 22nd, 2003 04:54:01 PM
Now I tried to format a partition I wanted originally to be used for Linux. However, even the formatting of that part of the harddisk does not work, after some 30 seconds of formatting W2K claims that formatting could not be completed...
Beside, I tried to repair W2K (using the repair modus when booting from the w2K CD). Did not solve...
And, under W2K itself (my default installation) exactly that CD rom ist not accessible with the same error (however, I could use to boot it).
What the hell did MS invent? Any idea?
Many many thanks! Walter
Floppy Problem with xp by Anonymous Ghost on April 23rd, 2003 03:06:33 PM
I work for a software company that uses floppys to keep people from copying there software. Lately, and it always seems to be with winxp, when instaling the software I support. I get errors that the floppy is not formatted, would you like to format it now. Iv tried the floppy on another customers computer. Of course the comp is usually not running winxp and the floppy can be read. Anyway what Iv done is diable everything in startup with msconfig, and what ya know. The error goes away. Now I know win2k doesnt have msconfig, however yiou can get a copy of the "msconfig.exe" online or from the winxp install cd. then drop a copy of it in to "c:winntsystem32" Then got to start->run and type "msconfig". Blam you got msconfig in win2k. then disable everything in starup and see if you still have the problem. Maybe just maybe you could turn things back on in startup and determine what is causeing the problem, if in fact this fixes the issue. If you have any questions email me at:

I actually found a solution from Microsoft. To resolve the problem I had to use regedit to open the registry and look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{4D36E980-E32511CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Delete the UpperFilters (and LowerFilters if any) Restart PC and all is well with my floppy drive. Hope this helps someone else. Thanks, John Blanchard
Floppy drive - insert disk by Anonymous Ghost on April 26th, 2003 06:21:06 PM
okay - here's one for you - driving me insane - I have win XP - installed last dec - floppy worked fine UNTIL last weekend i wanted to install new memory and harddrive. The floppy drive is enabled in Bios - Device manager says it is working properly. The light comes on when i try to access a: drive but then it asks me to insert a disk!!!?!???? I have uninstalled and reinstalled the device AND the controller, I have also unconnected the cable and power supply and reconnected again - red line is on pin 1 etc. still no solution.

Floppy Problems by Anonymous Ghost on May 14th, 2003 08:24:05 PM
I am installing MS-DOS 6.22 on a brand new P4 machine, with new floppy. I spared no expense (thought I was saving time). I have the same floppy problems as everyone dealing with ME/XP/NT/etc.
The floppy drive worked for 2 days and just quite this afternoon. I tried formatting in a WIN2000 machine and can use it there all I like. But the new floppy gives me nothing but errors. If I set the BIOS to check floppy on startup I get an Error (40).
Given this I suggest its not Windows but a floppy/drive/motherboard problem.
Floppy Problems by j1mb0b on May 16th, 2003 11:28:15 PM
I came to this forum to look for an answer to this same problem.
I have 3 m/c (2 types) with the same floppy problem -- one type is a P-III (A-Bit SA6-Raid) with Win2K Server. The other is an AMD Duron (Gigabyte GA7ZM) with Win2K Pro OS upgrade SP3++ 3 days ago => Instant Problem !).

The problem began sometime after SP3 + PostFix. I changed the FDDs, upgraded the BIOSs & Chipset drivers on both m/c -- POOP ! I even turned on Floppy Seek on Boot as a test. NADA. WAWA (Willy's Army Wins Again).

At this stage (23:30 & 3 weeks) I declare the score: MS-4, Customers-NoScore.

I just ran OnTrack SystemSuite 4 Disk Verifier on several floppies -- all tested as "Readable". NOW Explorer can read them !

Definitely an MS problem !!! For now, try to find a free test utility to do this at Boot or on demand until a fix is made. Are you sure you want automatic upgrades from this corp ?

Cheers. Pls forward any fix to my (open) email. TIA.

Floppies are unreliable media. They are not known to work for months. A floppy giving up after 4-6 weeks is perfectly fine. Sometimes students are also responsible for this, like taking out the floppy when the "reading" light of drive is still on.

I wrote of my floppy problems on May 14th..new machine, best drives, etc. Problems continue and this is before Windows is loaded, we're actually talking Dos 6.22 here!
Over lunch I went out and bought the cheapest floppy drive I could find, $13.85. Works perfectly.
So there is some problem with the floppy system that seems to not a Microsoft problem, but one from the hardware maker.
Oh, and forget about buying quality, just worry about what works. I wish I could send my drive to the school of May 20th for you to test. But the shipping would be more than the drive's worth!

Floppy not detecting by Anonymous Ghost on May 25th, 2003 07:28:35 PM
I've just built a pc (Windows XP) and my floppy drive is not responding. It passes through the POST screens fine, everything is fine until you want to use it. The light on the drive lights up through the POST screen as it should, then it goes off, so I know the cables are correctly placed (and I have played about with them). I've tried another floppy drive and 2 other cables (1 brand new) and still nothing. Both the floppy drives and the cables work perfectly on my XP machine. Has anyone got any good ideas? If I try to connect to A: all I get is a message saying "Please insert a disk into Drive A" - anyone please...

Many thanks, Gary.

A floppy fix... by Anonymous Ghost on May 27th, 2003 02:28:49 AM
Hi. I had no problems with my floppy until recently my hard drive crashed, and had to change a host of stuff and reassemble back my computer.

Before, I was running XP fine with no problems with the floppy drive (it was a 7-year old floppy drive I had plucked from my old MMX computer). It only started acting up once I replaced the motherboard and CPU, which I thought was kinda odd.

I have even tried reading the disk in plain DOS and Windows 98, to no avail. File system was read as RAW. Had the same "disk not formatted" problem.

So I went out and got me an $18 brand new Sony internal floppy drive (Model: MPF920-Z), replaced the 7 year old "antique", and it has worked fine so far with no problems. Thought I'd just share this. Good luck.

Floppy not detecting by Anonymous Ghost on May 31st, 2003 06:17:10 PM
Yes! Gary (dj_humpyg@yahoo.com), I have the same problem with my floppy. Since moving over from 98SE to XP Professional I cannot read floppies and get the Please insert a disk into Drive A message. Gotta' be a conflict. This is so weird!
Oh, Anderson? Got the great $18 Sony. Same problem. Glad it worked for you.

Floppy disk(s) fail (40) by Anonymous Ghost on June 03rd, 2003 01:34:27 PM
When I start my computer in the morning I get the above message.
After pressing F1 the computer boots up normally (Win2k) and the floppy drive functions normally. I can write and read without any problem.
It can´t be the OS that causes the message. The motherboard is an Asus P3BF. Bios 1016.
It is more annoying than a problem for me. What can cause it?
Floppy disk(s) fail (40) by Anonymous Ghost on June 11th, 2003 10:46:38 AM
Running XP. Had a hard drive crash. Went to reload get "Blue screen of death" and then pukes out. Repartioned drive, reformatted from a bootable CD. Floppy failure message comes on. Floppy drive came out of another computer and works fine. Changed cables etc. Still no good.
ASUS CUsL2 Motherboard. Thought about re-flashing bios, but cant't without a working floppy. Any ideas?
floppy disks failing under 2K by geoff-acad-user on June 14th, 2003 11:09:16 AM
I have this problem with my students at the FE college where I teach. I Thought I'd solved it by re-formatting all new disks under either XP or 2K before use. But problem cropped up again Fri. I hope that maybe, a student took the disk out whilst the drive was being accessed. This problem is very serious as AutoCAD students widely use floppies for their City & Guilds courses; and disks are required for test results. Needless to say that we do not have CD writers. At home I have used floppies that date back to 1994 and rarely had problems in the past. Of course I usually use new floppies now.

HELP!!
RE: Floppy not detecting by Anonymous Ghost on June 20th, 2003 05:13:26 PM
JC

I never had problems with my floppy moving from 98SE to XP. While a lot of people are suggesting it has something to do with the OS, I can't vouch for that on my end since the transition was pretty smooth.

After I changed the motherboard and CPU (from MS-6341 and Athlon Thunderbird 1.2GHz to an Intel D845PESV motherboard and Intel Pentium 2.4GHz), things started behaving strangely. Flashed and updated the BIOS as well, but to no avail.

Heck, I even unscrewed my floppy and shot out all the thick layer of dust caked in it, and cleaned the head as well, but again, to no avail.

So really, I am not so sure XP is solely to blame.

floppy disks that dont appear formatted under win2k, even though they are by Anonymous Ghost on June 24th, 2003 02:48:40 PM
i work as a network designer and consulter and also build pc's for the same company. i had the problem with two computers, one XP Pro and one Windows 2000. both of them could not read floppy disks at all, but when i changed the drive in the XP Pro system, it worked fine. i changed that drive from a brand new NEC drive to an older Sony drive i had in our inventory. it works fine now, but the windows 2000 one will still not. i have tried 3 different floppy drives in the system (NEC, Mitsumi, Sony) and none of them work. i also tried the registry fix mentioned before and microsoft's solution to the problem. none of them work, and i am left with a pc that needs to be delivered to a customer, but no one can fix it.

any ideas, please email me at brian@modern-tech.com

Floppy disk(s) Fail (40) by Anonymous Ghost on July 01st, 2003 01:58:30 PM
Floppy disk(s) fail (40)

This message will appear due to the following;
1. If the floppy cable is connected backward. - be sure the red stripe on the cable is connected to pin#1 on the floppy and the twisted end is towards the floppy.

2. The floppy cable is loose. Try replug the cable.

3. The power plug is loose or not connected to the floppy drive.
4. If you are using a SONY Floppy drive then be sure the red stripe on the cable is connected to pin#1 on the floppy - the connector orientation is a little different

Floppy Drive Errors In XP & 2000 by Anonymous Ghost on August 05th, 2003 06:56:42 PM
I also have problems with floppy drives in XP giveing i-o errors; complaining of bad media; disk not formated etc.
Everthing works fine on the same machine when booted from DOS or 98.
This happens more frequently for me
on AMD xp processor machines.
I just found a supposed fix from microsoft KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;811839
Fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;811840
No joy for me yet but i'm still trying!
The above mentioned article is about changing processor power state transition timings (C2 to C3).

My guess is that this problem is a combination of the media descriptor byte issue; microsofts' dropping support for older floppy formats (you can read but not format some of these)
a 3rd party 3 mode driver is needed to format in older formats eg:720KB
and finally the OS changing power state of the processor mid operation.
I think that microsoft intends on dropping the floppy entirely and that is why they let this annoying problem remain.

Ethernet recognition fails on Win2k pro by Anonymous Ghost on September 02nd, 2003 10:02:56 PM
New installation. Mother Intel D845GLLY with 2.0 ghz Celeron processor. When the machine is turned on, and when the windows session is completely started, the 3COM fast ethernet card is not recognized by Windows 2000 Pro, so the intranet is not ready to use. BUT, when reboot the machine (without button reset, only windows reboot), after the complete reinitiation the 3Com is recognized!
But indeed, when I shut down the computer the trouble is back again, and the two-reboot process is required for the net card detection.
I tried changing the card. I probed another 3com equal cards and two more of other brands too. I tried changing the PCI slot too but nothing.

What can to be happening? This is my most strange stuff with computers since the last decade :(
Any help would be appreciated, and sorry about my poor english (so far from Argentina).
Thanks in advance.
New XP install, Floppy "insert disk" error by Anonymous Ghost on September 21st, 2003 01:06:24 PM

I am running a self built AMD 2600, ASUS A7N8X Deluxe (2.0 with BIOS 1005), 1024MB RAM, XP Home. I've tried the fixes listed in this thread but none have worked. I'll update if I find any solution.

"Can somebody out there, with an answer on the XP - "insert disk" or "disk not formatted" error, respond."

Try using the floppy on some other computer, chances are that the floppy you are using has got damaged.
Floppies do get damaged pretty easily.
Re: machine reboot when saving on floppy by Anonymous Ghost on November 20th, 2003 01:51:23 PM
I'm having a similar problem. The difference is, when copying files from the floppy drive to the hard drive, the system reboots. I though it was related to the size of the files (which would indicate a RAM chip problem), but after much testing, it appears random and not file size related.
AN ANSWER TO FLOPPY DRIVE PROBLEM by Anonymous Ghost on November 27th, 2003 11:40:36 PM
please!. No I don't have the answer, I'm asking for an answer.

Please insert a disk into drive A:

Now I took my computer apart and then put it back together.

Environment - Windows 2000 Pro
Givens - cable is aligned with pin
- cable is working (worked before)
- drive is working (worked before)
- driver is working (worked before)
- WIN2K sees the Floppy drive and Device Manager says it is working properly
- disks are not corrupt and properly formatted

Problem - put in any disk and 2k prompts "Please insert disk into drive A:".

Since I have A,CDROM,C specified in BIOS, upon reboot, the A: drive is accessed.

I disabled and then renabled to use this device and have reinstalled the driver.

WHAT IN GOD'S NAME IS GOING ON? THIS PISSES ME OFF SO MUCH THAT MOSTLY EVERYONE HERE HAS HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM.

Re: Floppy Drive error in Win2k ONLY! by Anonymous Ghost on December 16th, 2003 11:17:14 AM
Heres a simple soulution.....

Had the same problem with my new Win2k box.

Had a cheap Belkin that kept giving me the "Insert Floppy in drive A" error.

Replaced it with a Sony. It worked once, then same error.

It turned out that the drive was just a little to close to the front of the chassis. Though when I inserted a disk it stayed in the drive, it did not give that full, satisfying click. It gave more of a dull click sound. Turns out the disk was not seating fully into the drive, thus thre drive could not read the disk.

Try taking the drive out of the rack. and test if it works. If it does it could be only a matter of setting the drive far enough back in the rack.

Yea, a real forehead slapper, but it took an old IT guru of 25 years to figure this out. I was about to edit my registry.

Just run the OS setup again without formatting, from inside of windows itself (no need to use bootdisk), it will replace any corrupted or missing files :)

Floppy conflict (I know the cause) by Anonymous Ghost on April 02nd, 2004 11:06:38 PM
I don't have a solution but....I had to flash my BIOS in order to fix a bug to enable the BIOS to detect drives higher than 32gig.
Ever since then, I've had the conflict error on my floppy. Conincidence? I don't think so.
I haven't tried it, but perhaps flashing back to the original BIOS would make it go away. That would confirm my suspicions.
Floppy Drive problem solved by Anonymous Ghost on April 03rd, 2004 09:37:02 PM
Turns out the floppy error is a misleading error. I was upgrading to XP professional and got this error as well. Read somewhere that conflicts like these (IRQ 2F8) are between the com ports. Search the net for conflict IRQ 2F8. When I realized this, I pulled out my modem (which acts as another com port even tho it is a card). IRQ 2F8 conflict goes away and floppy dirve is back in business.

I can't explain why there was no problem with previous OS's. XP pro doesn't like it tho.

Cheers.

Re: Floppy Drive error in Win2k ONLY! by Anonymous Ghost on June 09th, 2004 08:33:12 PM
I have had this problem on and off for the last couple of years. IT IS NOT the FDD (tried several new ones of different makes on different machines) and it is not the diskette itself (tried different OS, FDD and different brands). And not motherboard or BIOS (tried several mthbds with updated Bios). No solution presented so far works.

Bluescreen while accessing floppy on WinNT4.0 by Anonymous Ghost on August 25th, 2004 06:25:55 AM
I do have this problem on many (if not all) machines at work. (all are HP Vectra with winnt4.0 with latest sp.) Since I have to do a lot of disk copying (about 70-100 disks a month), I stumble over that problem a lot.

Usually during copying I get a bluescreen after avg. 10 disks. The only things I have found out so far are:

a) it has only to do with "disk access". It does not matter if I format, diskcopy or just move some files onto that disk, it is the "disk access" that counts.

b)The bluescreen itself shows always the "floppy.sys" as the culprit.

Because it happens just every now and then, it could be something like a "logfile overflow" (the logfile is full and: boom!) To me this looks like a lousy programmed floppy.sys driver. Is there an alternate floppy.sys driver around which might "behave" better?

why am i getting operation system not found on my lap top
Possible Solutions by Anonymous Ghost on October 15th, 2004 12:06:14 AM
1st, if you get the error "Floppy Disk(s) Fail (40)" -- or something similar -- the floppy drive cable is likely hooked up wrong, even if BIOS sees it fine.
2nd, I had the same problems as many people above, with my floppy being very flaky. I just went out and bought a new Sony mpf920, installed it with the same problem. I have previously noticed a different loudness to the "Click" when inserting a floppy, and realized that without a good satisfying click, the OS fails to be able to access it. An above post reminded me to check this problem; I slide back the drive perhaps 1/16" to 1/8", and now my drive works perfectly! Give this a try if you're not getting that CLICK!
3rd, troubleshooting any problem requires a strategy. As mentioned above, if you can't create a disk, trying making one elsewhere, and see if you can in fact read it (or vice versa). This at least lets you know your cable and floppy drive are not having issues with your operating system. I would also recommend trying to boot from a disk that you KNOW will boot ok on another computer. If your computer won't boot, the problem is NOT with the OS. Try resetting BIOS settings if you've tried the cable different ways and that didn't help (I would suggest writing down all of the current BIOS settings first, afterwards you could even start changing them back and see what caused the problem). Lastly, why not try moving your problematic floppy to another computer ??? Use all the connections from the other PC, taking note of how the floppy cable is connected. Do not install the floppy into the bay, just rest it somewhere it's safe, and see if it works then. That should tell you whether the floppy works ok or not.
After you've ruled out particular causes, you can start looking for compatibility issues with either your motherboard, OS, or resource conflicts.
Good Luck!
On a personal note, to those people who think sarcasm or cynicism is always enjoyable, I divine the day your computer takes a sh** on you, and you're left scratching your head, no longer the smart***.

Re: Floppy Drive error in Win2k ONLY! by Anonymous Ghost on December 05th, 2004 03:30:53 PM
I just got an Alienware top of the line computer with Windows XP to replace my old HP with Windows 98. The first two days, the Alienware computer opened everything just fine. I have a flash disk (connected to USB port) that was on my old computer and that I had transferred to the Alienware computer, the Alienware accessed it just fine. Last night, I took the flash disk off and put it back on the old computer so I could transfer some files. The old computer gave me "Disk not formatted, format now?" when I tried to access the flash disk. I took the disk back to the Alienware computer and it also said "Disk not formatted, format now?" when I tried to access the flash!

Then this morning, I tried to put 3.5 floppies into the AW; at first it read them but then it gave a clack clack on one, and then it started giving the "disk not formatted" message, to any disk we put in. Even weirder is that when we tried to read the floppies on the old HP (Windows 98) it did the same thing...read them at first, but then started giving "disk not formatted" and now it won't read anything either (even if it has not been in the Alienware). Neither computer will access its A drive at all, e.g. when I try to format the disk, it cannot access it. Sometimes the error message is "insert disk" or "A is not accessibele, No ID.." What the heck is going on?
