| (another) problem geting computer to see cdroms | Configuration: |
OK. here it is.
I recently aquired an abandoned and abused computer and have been slowly getting it back up to a running specification i can be happy with, mostly with the help of Boards and other online entities. Funny thing, ive had it for weeks and i JUST realized that neither of the two cd rom drives are recognized by windows. they ARE recognized by the bios at startup, so im thinkin i may just neeed the drives *problem* Neither drive bears ANY markings or branding characteristicts, that is to say, they are blank and i have no idea of their make/model/yadayada. is there anything i can do short of dismanteling the computer and checking for makings, and if it does come down to that, is it certain that i will be able to make these drives work ?
any help apperciated.
| Operating System : microsoft windows 98
CPU/Processor : AMD K6 333 MHz
RAM : Actual:60 MB
Additional Comments : This computer was a donation to me and could use some TLC (im workin on it!!)

Change Drive Letters in Windows XP by Anonymous Ghost on March 14th, 2005 10:26:59 PM When you add drives to your computer, such as an extra hard drive, a CD drive, or a storage device that corresponds to a drive, Windows automatically assigns letters to the drives. However, this assignment might not suit your system; for example, you might have mapped a network drive to the same letter that Windows assigns to a new drive. When you want to change drive letters, follow these steps:
Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
Under Computer Management, click Disk Management. In the right pane, you'll see your drives listed. CD-ROM drives are listed at the bottom of the pane.
Right-click the drive or device you want to change, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
Click Change, click Assign the following drive letter, click the drive letter you want to assign, and then click OK. |

Select the Device Manager tab in the System Properties window. Click on the device type you wish to change, for example your CDROM. Double-click the critter who's drive letter you want to set. You should now see the Properties window for that drive. Click on the Settings tab. At the bottom a box should read "Reserved drive letters." chosse a letter, under Start drive letter: and End drive letter:. If the Start/End letter options are grayed out, look for a checkbox labeled Removable. Check it, select your drive letters, and then uncheck it. Hit the OK button and reboot. You should see your new drive letter assignment when you open up My Computer. Easy! |
