after a compaq quick restore in windows
ME both cd drives faild to function, they both have yellow sign shows the drivers
are not installed
i triedt to go to bios f10
to see if boot sequence needed reset but computer was unabel to go to bios
i tried to go back to last known good, msconfig, unsuccesefll, it stops at the calender and can select any other day than the current date
is there a way i can take to fix this problem?

Make sure that all the cables and other stuff is secure. Next make sure the jumpers are set and any bios options are correct. If you are 100% sure it is the CD-rom and the warenty is 100% out of date open the cover and reset the laser. ( i know it sounds nuts but it worked for me) Gently push the whole head on the part that goes back and forth towards the center and then test it out. YOu may have to put it all back together. And do not touch the laser. Good luck :) |

i will try to summerize this post as much as possible being that i have exhausted all my resources, i cross my fingers you can help :)
first-i removed my maufactures modem to another slot for the very first time to put a sound card in its place, moving the modem to another slot
second-the modem could not be detected by windows, so i tryed installing it manually, while it installs just fine and is listed everywhere it should be, any attempt to use the modem wether in dialup, modem diagnostics, hyperterminal ect, the device does not respond.
third-after a suggestion from compaq that some windows drivers were lost, i did a full system restore
_fourth-i bought a new modem, still the same troubles
lastly-please understand that i have tryed any and all help provided in the help menu of windows, searched and tryed all help provided through compaq, spoke with a tech rep at compact, who so dutifully provided me with the same help i searched for in my own computer, all to no avail. installed, reinstalled both the old and new modems, which install just fine. under modems, modems diagnostic, more info, i get the message that the modem is not responding, as with in any case that any program is attempting to communicate with my modem. i am at a complete loss. have i damaged my motherboard in pulling cards and putting cards in to the point that it can no longer read a modem? another suggestion this time from Best Buy. I admittantly am no computer genius, self taught a bit but that is all. if there is anything that can not be found in the help index of my own computer since i have tryed it all that you may think helpfull, i would be elated to try it at this point.

Either you have a virus or some friend of yours put a executable file for this to play a prank on you. just delete the file in the latter case, for former one get a decent anti-virus to do the job |

I had to do a complete system restore and backed up my key files and saved them to cd.Now I've recovered from my system problem and am trying to installing my files again back onto my pc but the D: drive on my burned cd keeps asking toinsert a cd (which I have) in adaptec it shows as media is not ready. I did some how manage to get into the cd before and managed to restore my files but had then to restore system again as my pc had same problem as before. Since i've reseated cd in drive numerous times and only managed to access drive once and when I did it instantly locked up, so I had to do hard shutdown....any ideas....pleasssse |

If the tray doesn't come out then you should take the drive to your hardware vendor.
If the tray comes out and you insert the disc and cd drive refuses to accept:-
1) Try using a CD lens cleaner
2) Does the CD contain lots of scratches. (CD is gone)
3) Take it to your hardware vendor for check up |

I have the same problem, even with win98 boot disks the drive is recognized but never spins up or dectects the CD. I bought a new drive and it does the same thing! I am thinking now that my onboard IDE controller is to blame and I'm going to try a $20 PCI IDE controller card (in the mail) |

after opening the tray it will close itself in about 2 seconds. about 20% of the time it stays open like it should. it doesn't always read the cd-r that is in there. i know it isn't a virus or a trojan. i have also used a cd laser lens cleaner disc on it and that didn't help. any software suggestions before i crack open the case to have a look. |

sorry guys, RE-INSTALL the OS that you have on the computer, after making sure that you have the cd in on the SHINY side DOWN! entering BIOS (F1 or ESC of F10 etc.) just to see if the CD-rom/rw is detected... if not check IED connections (to the Motherboard also!!) if nothing break the cd-rom/rw, and purchase another... (you'll feel better for breaking it:} ) you also could try installing NERO INCD to see if cd roms/rw disks don't recognise

My cd-rw drive isn't working properly. It will open if the tray is empty, but when I put a disc in, it sometimes will read and sometimes will not (it opens my own recorded anime discs, but it would not read create-a-card). If I try to eject the disc, the drive won't open (I can it open through a ridiculous process I discovered by chance; i 'record' a CD from Roxio, and when it reads that there is data on the CD it will automatically eject it. This is the only way I can get it to open). I even tried what somebody mentioned: sticking a pin into the little hole. All it did was makae a very loud and unpleasant sound that I've never heard come from my computer before.
I'm going to check if our computer came with a cleaning disc (I think it did, but we purchased it two years ago) and I'll try that. I have a strong feeling it won't work though...
Any suggestions are appreciated ^_^.

well bud i took ur advice after trying everthing to get my rewriter working i finally lost the head took it out of the computer and smashed it. a costly habit to say the least considering it was 2 weeks old. ah well paid an extra few quid to get some1 2 install another one working fine now |

My cd-rw drive doesn't open unless it is just turning on. Here are 2 links I found. I have not tried them yet. My cd-rw drive I can only open when I just start up the computer. On occassion it opens momentarily but quickly stops working and is not read on my computer.

When I put any kind of CD into the CE-ROM drive, it first flashes the green light like it's trying to read the disk and then flashes yellow. I do not hear any movement inside the drive. I have taken it out and cleaned it. I have checked the device manager, and it states that the device is working properly. I have uninstalled the drive and rebooted. All results the same. Please help. I had the same problem with my CD/RW drive - the " please insert disk " message. I believe it started when I removed a disk with a program using that disk running in the background. I recieved the blue screen with a message stating to " insert CD # and hit or hit to cancel. I hit cancel and was not able to access the drive there after. After months of trying to figure what was wrong It finally began working after I did this :
1) open
2) place a software disk in the drive that is not recognising disks
3) disk drive icon in
4) click
I did this several times, each time my cursor would turn to an hourglass for several seconds after about the fifth or sixth try it started recognising disks again. It has worked ever since. Do not give up after a few tries at this, it not work for me untill I did it several times. However just prior to doing this.
I did this :
1)Dbl click
2)Dbl click
3)Dbl click
4)click tab at top
5) click the next to
6) Dbl click device that is not working
7) click the tab at top of window
8) under options if
9)click ok to exit all windows

I had the same problem with my CD/RW drive - the " please insert disk " message. I believe it started when I removed a disk with a program using that disk running in the background. I recieved the blue screen with a message stating to " insert CD # ( series or numbers and letters ) and hit (enter) or hit (ESC) to cancel. I hit cancel and was not able to access the drive there after. After months of trying to figure what was wrong It finally began working after I did this :
1) open (My Computer)
2) place a software disk in the drive that is not recognising disks
3)right click disk drive icon in My Computer
4) click (explore)
I did this several times, each time my cursor would turn to an hourglass for several seconds after about the fifth or sixth try it started recognising disks again. It has worked ever since. Do not give up after a few tries at this, it not work for me untill I did it several times. However just prior to doing this.
I did this :
1)Dbl click (start)
2)Dbl click (controll panel)
3)Dbl click (system)
4)click (device manager) tab at top
5) click the (+) next to (CD Rom)

My son built a new computer which works fine. When he first tried it the CDrom RW worked but now it does not work or even show the icon. It does not show up on "My Computer". We added a standard d:/ drive, to the A:/ and C:/.

AS far as the cd rom tray that wont open up . find a very small safety pin and stick it in the tiny hole on the cd tray and it will release the door to the cd tray . |

Dose the cdrom-rw show up in the system hardware settings .. i.e control panel, system ,harware,device manager, if so try deleteing the driver and and restart computer and let windows install it again . |

Unable to Burn a CD-ROM using a Samsung CD-RW Drive. It was working fine for a year now, suddenly it won't write, I recieve an error message saying that the disc may be unusable though I have checked and the disc is fine, have tried using different discs also.

hey i have . P2,350 Mhz, 256 SDRAM. I have 40x cd rom and 24x10x40 cd rw. I opened the system and took out the cd rw and placed it back again. Now after fixing the ide interface the computer just doesnt boot up. However if i place the ide interface of the cd rom to the cd rw the system boots. Basically only one of the two can work at one time. I am kinda sure that i dint disturb the jumpers or screw the BIOS. Please help me out !! |

My cd burner was working...then suddenly it stopped reading and I cannot write to it...no error messages except through ezcd creator which says insert a disc...I took the samsung sw-224b from My system and put in an aopen crw-4048 which worked for about a day and then it too stopped working...both still work on other systems just not on mine....I also cannot boot from the drives...is there a virus going around that disables cd/rw`s???? sounds like the kind of scummy thing the riaa would do to get people to stop burning discs...get the bad guys and all others are acceptable casualties |

i jst noticed my cd-rw now says under Nero Drivespeed tht it reads at 40x and writes at 12x as MAX :P its 48x write and 52x read. Wat is this guys :P
Second thought it is not my motherboard i had this working on it before but it stoped now without a cause. Now even when i insert a blank media it doesnt exept the cd-r(does not initialise. Hi i had bought a brand new ASUS CRW-4824A cd writer (48x24x52x) about 8 months ago. There were hardly any cds writen from it. To my aproximation about 30 CD-R and 2 CD-RW (x twice). Since long time i had been noticing this in the drive. The seek time for reading the cd was increased but it worked fine writign cd-R @ 48x and RW @ 32x its max speed. This drive had not been used for reading cds at all. I have 2 other drives for this. Last week i wanted to burn somethign and it wont initialise upon inserting a Blank CD-R. This was BENQ 80min CDS the same media i had used previously with no problems. I then inserted the original ASUS media and same thing. Then i poped in a normal audio CD it wont read a single track. Playing in media player jst resulted in playback wiht no audio output i tried playing from the drive and no sound comes from the headphone out but the light flashes as if its reading the cd. Played with the aspi drivers but im using XP and its not needed (i tryed tht). I then got online downloaded the latest firmware V3.5 andtried everything again. same thing but now it reads CD-RW and normal cds it erased a CD-RW and then wrote on it again. But as soon as i pop in a blank cd R the drive just spins trygint o pick up and gives up atlast. I tryed many types of media and same thing. ITs CD-R and audio cd tht has problem. I have other drives too and no problem with them. I checked the Interface mode of CD-RW and its DMA - Mulitiword Mode 1. Tryed PIO but no luck. The most anoying thing is when you reboot it hangs the whole PC if there is a blank cd in te writer. Realy anoying even freezes XP if i do that. I checked NERO DriveSpeed Tool and it says the curretn read speed is 40X i try changing but it doesnt change. All other drives are set to same 40X reading speed.. Wow this is lenghty :P beter wait for a reply now ..... I cant take it back to the place i bought it coz its overseas |

I have an abit kr7a raid motherboard and whenever I add a Hard drive I get a problem with my cdrom (memorex 1648) trying to stay open rather than closed. I have found in the past that disconnecting drives an rebooting several times eventually solves the problem but takes dozens of attempts before it works.
I have now installed a usb printer and it recognises the printers drive and the fun has started again.
Does anyone know what causes this and how to resolve this properly as I not really sure that my actions are really doing anything as perhaps I am doing something unknowingly as I get frustrated? |

I have a laptop with a cd and floppy exchangable drive, my floppy is recognized upon start up, but the cd when in does not even let the computer turn on.....if I unplug the cdrom drive the computer boots up ok? Any thoughts on how to get the boot up process to work and get the computer to recognize the drive? |

My cd-rom and DVD wont read a cd unless the machine is rebooted with the cd in it then everything works fine. I recently had the drive formatted so there is no restore available. When I incert a cd into my d drive it will read only "bought" cd's no cdr's. When I put in a cdr is says device to ready???? Any ideas. I had no problem reading cdr's up until yesterday. AG said a friend was playing a prank or there was a virus. I discovered through research W32/Magold-D (Norton did not detect) I did all steps listed in the manual removal but the cd-rw still goes in and out when the system is turned on. i am trying to run my recovery disc on my cd-rom. i can only run anything in dos mode. my computer which has windows95 will not run windows due to a malfunction in the vmm32.vxd files. how can i command my computer to run the recovery disc using only dos. it reads the d drive for just a couple seconds yet fails to load the much needed info off the recovery disc so that i can get back into my windows operating system. in other words i have no help from my windows operating system and cannot get it to load even in safe mode. any suggestions? |

I have an ASUS s4533 Motherboard using Windows ME and Nero v. 5. Excellent software and progam until a few weeks ago. Suddenly, my CD-rom drive was "locked" by some utility according to a Norton anitvirus scan.
This was discovered after I went out and purchased another CD-rom drive and installed Easy CD by Roxio. It worked for one day and then, soon enough, that same problem.

The drive reads CDs and at least one CD-ROM. For other CD-ROMS, eventually a blue screen appears and direct that a CD_ROM with a specific serial number be inserted and if already inserted/it is, the drive must be cleaned. Thanks, Marc

In my device manager it list my cdrw and has a message that says that windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. i have a compaq series 5000 and just recently i have noticed that the light for my Cd Rom burner does not go on whent he computer is starting. Start--Run type "regedit" without the quote marks.
Click Edit--Find search for "NO IDE" without the quote marks.
If it is found in the RIGHT payne, right click and delete.
Re-boot, if the cd-rom drive doesn't appear then Un-install your burning software, try the afore mentioned process again.
If you still have problems take it to a repair shop.

Got the same problem on compaq .350mhz. w98. CD Drive has disappeared from system after a bout of 'please insert disc' when it was in already. when I tried 'reinstall hardware' at 'system- device manager' - forgot I was in 'Cd Drives' and chose a floppy Disc drive, said 'Generic floppy disc installed' for a while then disappeared.and I have'nt found a way to undo that. In FDISK clicked 'reboot from CD' and it came up as A:\> instead of D:\> Yes I tried Typing in D:\> =bad command. Computers could save much time and work. |

June23 solved this beast of a problem thanks to a very kind article - I greedily read it but failed to keep the name guilt feelings now - suggested
go to safe mode and swap the 'bus mastering driver' in hard disk controllers in system device manager for the 'non bus mastering' - in intel drivers and restart hey presto I have a cd listed an working must be in safe mode to swap it or freezes up and use of emergency start up hope this works for you all here |

I have just bought a new PC with built in CD/DVD re-writer combo. When I try to load a game onto my computer such as Championship Manager 4, it will Install OK, but I cannot play the game. When i double clic the short cut it gives me the running icon for about 5 mins and then the icon goes away and nothing happens. How can I fix this problem? |

This story is VERY familiar. Having been there! If these things are happening to you...it is likley that ALL your eeproms have been contaminated and are spreading through any and all parts HW/SW/FW..Lost alot of nice stuff. Someone is a real creep to have released this. Not had any luck with update flashing, seems to activate on POST, and sit in ram waiting to pounce on anything. short of a solder station to change the eeproms and reflash in a CLEAN system ALL IS LOST!!!! Samsung 52*24*52 cd-rw is giving unknown problem.
Connected CD RW into Windows 98 machine.Installed Nero Express(Bundled software also).While CD Drive is without any CD or with a blank CD, PC hangs. Sometimes, on eject command, if tray opens to insert a CD, again it hangs. A solution is asked for. Please help.

Nero and then explorer could not find the CDRW drive. There was a conflict with my modem USB-I switched it to another socket and it nows works as normal. |

i had been trying to see how poorly a damaged audio cd i had would play, in the hopes that i might be able to burn a usable copy of it. i had first tried it in my burner, and was playing it in my cd-rom for comparison. things froze and i had to preform a warm boot. i was also unable to eject the cd. after this it is no longer being detected by the bios, nor by windows.
set in the bios as cd/dvd, i'm told that it is not atapi complient; set for auto-detect it shows as not installed. i really have no idea what is going on, any help would be appriciated |

i have a benq cdrw but i have problems with the drive it will not read cdr discs it will how ever read software dics that are brought with things such as the installation disc for freeserve, as i have read above the drive opens i place the disc in and it lights up but can not read so it stops and the light goes out if any one can help with this i would be so grateful. |

I have an MSI dragon writer CDR/RW 48-16-48 I tried to flash it's bios but there a power filure by the time so after that the driver is not detected by the bios.

Works fine when there is content on the CD. Problem is when I put a blank CD in. Window pops up asking that a CD be inserted. When I insert the blank CD nothing happens and the pop up doesn't disappear. |

I was launching Thief 3 and for some reason it was't as fast as it would have been. I've experienced this earlier on with me waiting only to find a window saying something about delay runtime, but it does work later on. Well anyway, knowing the result (plus I was a bit impatient that afternoon), I hit eject on my LG CDROM player, and in the midst of it reading the disk, the tray came out, but it's not been working ever since. I uninstalled it as well as installed it and restarted the PC and shut it down, but I was in vain. I'm pretty desperate now 'caue I'm addicted to the game.
Also, I tried other disks but it can't read any of them though the light flashes on and off, so will a cleaner actually work? I mean, what;s the point, it might not read the cleaner even, right? Thanks in advance! |

My CDROM drive is a 52 speed SAmsung.It gives problems with certain cd's hwereby it causes the pc to hang and the pc only comes out of it if I take the cd out.
It does this in making ISO's too but if I take out the cd the computer continues making the iso (even with the cd out!crazy huh.)
Sometimes with a specific cd (eg my Encarta 98 cd) if I turn on the computer with it in the PC the pc will not get passed the XP starting up screen till I take it out.I'm pretty desperate.Help,please |

my cd rw isnt reading the disk,i get a message saying the disk in drive e is not formatted do you want to format.
when i put the disk in the cd rw the light comes on for a few seconds then goes out but i cant hear any sound from the cd rw like you do when the cd loads up. i think i had this problem before and it turned out to be a virus,but i cant remember how to fix it,ive tried norton anti virus and its not detecting any viruses.

I recently installed windows XP (with win98 dual boot). Sometimes when I change CDs, "My computer" doesn't recognize that the CD was changed. It keeps on displaying the contents of the previous CD. Sometimes it works properly. This doesn't happen when I'm using win98. Please help! |

try puting your modem on the right communication dial-up port[usually port 1 or 3][u can see what port its on in the modem properties, then make a new internet server dial up connection so the new modem will know what to do-.if this dont work go to device manager and open properties of the modem and query the modem and then click the log and see what it says-make sure its configured right.if you dont have the right driver it will not cannect. |

I have had the same cd-rom drive and same cd burner for 3 years now with no problem. As of yesterday, they both will not read any disks I put into the drives. Never had a problem before. The only thing that I noticed is that my "Norton Antivirus" showed a "malicuous script detecter" for the "helpctr.exe". It prompted me to stop this script, which I did and now both drives will not read. They both make the sound that they are working, but then they stop.
Any ideas?

It is August 3, 2005; and I am yet another user having the same problem. I am using Windows 98, and the Device Manager says that the CD-ROM is working properly, yet the drive will not read a single CD. Perhaps there is dust on the optics of the drive, and a blast of compressed air will cure the problem. Perhaps the solution is deeper. What to do? What to do? |
