My wifes Sony Vaio desktop is not recognizing blank dvds when entered into either her dvd-rom drive or her dvd burner. It will recognize blank cds...so, what might the problem be?

CPU/Processor : Pentium 4 1.9 MHz

My computer says my hard drive is healthy and active, but when i open 'My Computer' window, it's not there. |
