This maybe due to many reasons. The most common reason though is dust.
Use a good quality CD lens cleaner.
If that doesn't help take the cd drive to your vendor for checkup/servicing to identify any other problem it may have. |

Sounds still but check the cables are all in correctly. I built a computer for someone last week and it all worked, then I went inside and turned down the fan, and all of a sudden the cd drive opened, but wouldn't work. I then thought I might have knocked the cable and I had, it was out slightly. So check the cables. |

If it plays music then the power supply and small 3 wire cable to the sound card is ok. I suggest that the 25 wire ribbon cable is unplugged or not fully pushed in to its slot. Try the mother board end as well. |

When I install a CD into my laptop DVD drive it does not reconize it. An error message comes up "Windows cannot read from this disk. I had to install a modem on my computer. when I went to open the cd rom for the installation, my cd rom will not work. The green light flashes on but the door will not open. I tried to put a pin in the small hole under the door, but that won't work either. What could be the problem? It shows up on "my computer", and I have hit the properties button for "eject" thinking it might open but it hasn't. What could be the problem? My CD-ROM tray opens and closes by itself every few minutes, 24 hours a day. The only way to stop it is to shut down the system. Again, when I turn my computer back on, the problem returns. "LG CD-ROM CRD-8480C" is my CD-ROM. Why is this happening and what should I do to fix the problem? |

Did you check your system for viruses and trojans?
Use McAffee or Norton or AVG Antivirus to do the scan. |

hi, last week i updated the win 98 to xp. the c-rom worked for the intallation, but not since i have xp. i thought it would be an update prob, so i completely formatted my pc, and made a clean new xp installation with a new cdrom i added. i find both cd-rom under hardware, and both are said to be running ok. howeverm the cd rom LG GCR-8523B openes, but never reads and asks me to "insert cd".
i cant find the problems, ide cable is ok...

It's also a good thing to check if your power supply is still okay and giving the right ampere output for the 12V and 5V rails.
Mine had a problem like this and it seemed that 19A on the 5V rail was not enough... a HEC-350VD-T solved the problem with 33A on the 5V rail.

I recommend that you get your drive checked by a hardware engineer. |

disc burn but do not verify cannot get them to work in cd-rom when using the dvd rom takes ages to load and still does not work. When opening file up shows items are there but will not play.

I have been using my laptop with the aforementioned DVD player for a few months now woth no problems, but in the last few days it refuses to read some DVDs - saying
"Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows"
I repeat - this only happens with certain DVDs, e.g. my LOTR TT extended version original DVDs, while others work perfectly well. I am using Power DVD, but I cannot read some DVDs at all, even from explorer.
Anyone have any idea what might be the problem.
I recently installed SuSE Linux on my laptop, but I seriously do not think that is the problem.
Please any thoughts???

My computer can detect the CD-RW and CD-Rom drives in the bios. A few weeks ago the drives where working fine, then they disapeared from the "my computer" it only showes the C:/ and the floppy drive. when i try to install new drivers or re-install the drives the WindowsXP OS doesnt detect the drives. I am very computer literate, and tried all that i can think of, can somebody please help me!!

My DVD/CD-RW drive keeps trying to read in short bursts but fails eventually. I did manage to get it to read my back up Driver disk after many atempts and it did download. This has not cured the problem and it is still playing up. Could this be cured by cleaning the head with a standard CD head cleaner. But how do I do this if it will not read it? |

Lots of problems, and not many solutions :( , i have a similar problem to many of you and if i find a solution i will be sure to post it here :D
My Problem:- My CD-ROM worked fine until a couple of days ago but now doesn't register that a disc is inserted whether Audio, Data or VCD, when i insert the disc it spins for a little while then stops dead, and windows XP pops up a little message.... "Please Insert CD" :(, i replaced the drive with an old crative 52xMX (old but still sealed and unused)and it has the same problem, when i tried the drives in my wife's PC (also winXP) they work fine... there are no conflicts and i have not installed any new hardware or software,i am at a loss now but hope to have it fixed sooooooon.... |

I have the same problem. I bought a new CR-rom 4 days ago cause my 2 yr-old CDRW completely bogged down. THing is, my new drive (Samsung 52x) was working fine until yesterday. Haven't been using the drive much then it suddenly refuses to read my CD's. I'm sure it's not the OS, lens, nor the cables. Need help pls. |

My CD-ROm Drive was a bit defective when I knocked onto it one day when it was coming out. Now, when I press the eject button, the tray does not come out but I can hear a monotonous sound and there is a light stating it is busy. When I check what thing made that sound, it was one of the gears that was rotating. Please tell me how to solve the problem. |

For all those with the GCR-8523B driver issue. The reason you cannot find a driver is because they do not exist. The driver is built into the product. Windows uses plug and play technology to get the driver from the device.

I dont know why but all of a sudden I cannot read from my A drive or my CD drive. If i boot using the A drive it will read the A drive and the CD drive (as in start computer with CD ROM support) but not when I am in windows.
If I use NERO, it will see the drive and burn to it, if I use InCD, it will see the drive and burn to it, I just can't read or access the drive.
Any ideas?

I can read dvd's from the dvd drive but not cd's (data or music) on either drive. However if I use a program like MusicMatch it can read a music CD. |

I have a dell computer Gx260 , My bios see`s the cd-rom and the Os see and recongnizes the hardware. But the drive when ever i put a cd- in the sleeve it starts up but then it just stops spinning ? Is this a hardware or software issue? |

It seems that Im not the only one that didn't have a problem and now my CD/CD-RW DVD doesn't work and when checking the system Can't find anywhere and cant clean because it doesn't read HELP |

when i am trying to back up a dvd, the process will finish encoding and prompt to insert a blank dvd, but when inserted it does not reconize, keeps reading the same message:insert a blank dvd |

on my computer when i click on either my m or n drive i receive an error message saying that the drive is not accessible. my device manager says that it is installed and running properly. what should i do? |

I don't know what happened, but for some reason the no adware that I bought says I am not registered and my avg free 7.0 says it is damaged. When I go to reinstall my avg it says d:\ is not accesible, the device is not ready. What am I doing wrong? Please help. |

I can play dvd`s and burn them but cant play cd`s or burn them either... can anyone tell me wat might be the problem.. is it the lasers??? is there just one laser for reading dvd`s and cd`s and one for coping cd`s and dvd`s |
