Windows XP slow startupConfiguration:
When booting the pc the welcome to windows screen used to take 5 or 6 seconds - now its taking over a minute.
There is no software on this pc except the os.

Additional Comments:
This problem was occuring before - so we backed up everything we wanted to keep onto cd. Then we reinstalled winxp pro (fresh install), and boot after boot it is just so damn slow! We havnt installed anything else at all.

Re: Windows XP slow startup by Anonymous Ghost on August 31st, 2005 10:01:17 AM
ok, do the following and post your results:-

1. Defragment your hard drive. Use the built in XP defragmenter (dfrg.msc). It's the
only one that properly optimizes your system's prefetching to speed up boot time.

2. Go to Microsoft's website and download BootVis.exe. It will optimize your prefetching
even further than the built in defragmenter. Use both to get the best results: dfrg.msc
first, then BootVis.exe->Tools menu->Optimize.

3. Delete anything that you don't need in the Start->Programs->Startup folder, and
in the Registry under HKLM->Software->Microsoft->Windows->Run and HKCU->Software->Microsoft->Windows->Run

Don't use Norton SpeedDisk!--It may slow your XP system boot time by about 6 seconds.

Thanks.
Tried it - but there is no change at all.
I did a low-level format but think i may need to zero out all the sectors.
What do you reckon?

low-level format will not help in this scenario. and one should always avoid doing that.

I found a link that I found most bizzare. It said to go into control panel, network connections, right click on LAN, select TCP/IP and enter 192.168.0.1 for IP and 255.255.255.0 for subnet. Effectively, disable DHCP. I did this (substituting a static IP on my LAN for their suggestion) and rebooted, and sure enough, quite a bit faster. I know it is a stupid work around, but if it works... switch from DHCP and give your slow machine a static IP.

Fast mode is not disabled.
There is no difference with the bios/cmos from before.
I think i'll have to d/l something to zero out the sectors & reinstall the os?
