There are too many tasks running in the background which delays the boot process(i.e start up programmes).Try disabling the start up programmes using ms config
through safe mode.

windows 98 will not shout down

My computer also will not shut down. It gets to the "Windows ids shutting down" screen, snd just hangs there until I manually shut it down.

This is a 50/50 chance that it will work. Boot to command prompt using an emergency boot floppy disk or the bootable CD. Change the path to c:\windows\command\> prompt. Type: scanreg /fix ...Wait for the result(s). If it has fixed the prob, remove floppy boot disk or OSCD then, turn off computer manually, reboot. If it doesn't boot to the OS normally, repeat procedure/steps but the change the switch to /restore e.g.: scanreg /restore in the c:\windows\command\> prompt. Wait for the results again then reboot. If nothing else works, well...format HD & reinstall OS, drivers & the applications. Good luck!
MSGSRV32 not responding by Anonymous Ghost on October 26th, 2004 07:46:03 AM
At the time of fresh installation of 98se, after inputting the sr. no. machine hangs. when we press ctrl + alt + del button it shows MSGSRV32 not responding.

If we install through ghost setup it hangs up before the start menu screen comes up.
