winupd.exe virused - needs replacingConfiguration:
My winupd.exe file has w32.beagle.M@mm virus. Norton Anti-Virus wants to quarantine it and can't fix the problem. (I have latest version and it successfully fixed a copule of other files with the problem). My Win98SE disks don't have a copy of this file and I can't find a way of getting it from MS sites as an item in its own right. Where can I get a replacement? Operating System : Windows 98SE
CPU/Processor : AMD Athlon 1600 MHz

O.o Why would you want to replace winupd.exe? Its a trojan. Norton can't get rid of it because there is another file which respawns the file everytime its deleted. Best thing to do to get rid of it is to reboot in Safe Mode, and delete the winupd files from C:/windows/system and C:/windows/system32. You'll also want to go into msconfig and remove it from the startup programs list, and also look around in regedit for it [look under Microsoft>Software>Windows>CurrentVersion, its usually hidden around there].

I have the same problem. I am about to reboot to safe mode, but when I tried the reg edit thing, it doesn't work because winupd.exe blocks regedit from opening.

rename regedit.exe to regedit.com then open & remove the entries. You can change back after removal.

How do I remove winupd.exe. I stop it from running. Go into msconfig and it shows for a couple of seconds and it is gone. I cannot edit msconfig. winupd is very evasive.

others i'm concernd about that i dont know how to kill are atimon.exe and mpr.exe i dont know what they are...

Do not delete or rename MPR.EXE or MPREXE.EXE or you will not be able to boot into windows in either safe or regular mode.
You will get 2 error messages (MSGSVR32 and SPOOL32 invalid page faults) and startup will hang.
I made the mistake of renaming MPR.EXE and ended up having to boot to dos prompt and renaming it back to original name using dos commands.

Here is the w32.beagle.M@mm removal tool page from the Symantec site.

My winupd.exe got corrupted, I've tried straight file deletes, safe mode deletes, tools to eliminate it from the Startup menu. But it keeps coming back.
The anti-virus programs can't get rid of it either.....Please someone help.
