Have the same problem. Use Netscape 7.1 doesn't affect it. Got the bug from wi-fi here at kinko's in LA. Sometimes the bug goes away. IE6 runs fine. Check their website www.grandstreetinteractive.com. They say their not spyware, there more like a bug for pop-ups and ads. e-mail me billw65772@aol.com

PS. their is no software on their website to download like they claim.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on June 20th, 2004 03:35:03 PM
My theory about the badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com problem is that it's a bug,
not so called malware. Never the less, I filed an official complaint with the IFCC
(http://www1.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp).

I think this is an unwanted component developed by grandstreet' that was
automatically installed by one of the less reputable sites I visited. When IE starts,
the component redirects the user's home page to point to the home page of grandstreet's
client. (In my case a portal called searchmyrequest.) If that's not bad enough, this
particular component is attempting to use a bad URL when redirecting IE's request
for my home page, thus causing the endlessly flashing badurl message in the status bar.

Of course different users can have different home pages, so I created a new user account,
logged on as that user, then, without starting IE, I set the home page to be something
safe, like Yahoo or Google. (Right mouse click on the IE icon and select properties from
the short cut menu. This allows you to change your home page without starting IE.) My
new user account allows me to access the web without any problems (so far).

Follow up:

I logged on as the original user-- the one with the badurl problem. I checked the
system registry (Start->Run->regedit) and discovered several references to
searchmyrequest (the portal I thought grandstreet was trying to establish as my home page)
under

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL

I deleted these entries, and now IE starts without any problems (so far) in my original
user account. (Of course editing the registry is risky business. If you screw up, you can
restore the last good system registry by pressing F8 during system startup.) Of course
on other computers grandstreet' may be trying to set the home page to a site other than
searchmyrequest, so this tip may be of limited use to others.

P.S. I am running Windows 2000 Professional.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on June 21st, 2004 12:56:32 PM
ok well my antivirus detected this as the badurl trogen it creates a backdoor for hackers to get into your system by blocking access to your internet it effects your browser directly snd is undetected by most antivirus programs on a file somewhere in your system there is a small messege text on the bottom that the text string sayes
badurl_grandstreet_interactive
to fix this just delete this file and unplug your modem and plug it back in and you wont get this gay messege
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on June 21st, 2004 05:43:26 PM

I've been trying to search my entire system for any files with badurl or grandstreetinteractive or similar file names.

i've been at this for too long and have tried multiple things....Someone please help...i'm a rookie at all this!!!

I'm having the same problem as the person who started this thread. My computer is doing the exact same thing. I'm a rookie too and have no idea where to look to find this file. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on June 22nd, 2004 03:24:33 AM
Well - I picked this nasty badurl.garndstreetinteractive crap from the WIFI service at a hotel in atlanta...

However - I just solved it by trying somthing I saw on this page. I created a 2nd user. I logged on as that user and sure enough got on the network and could view sites. Then I switched users back to thye original troubled account and ran Internet explorer. ALAS - IT WORKED!!! I did not mess around with any registries or anything. I just switched back after running IE in the new account. It is like the process erased whatever was causing the problem. This was making me crazy! I hope the issue stays fixed!!!!
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on June 22nd, 2004 11:42:45 AM
I am also having this problem. I am running windows 98 and have tried everything stated in the tread other than creating a new user. I was looking at the flashing site name and what also appears in there is www.errorplace.com and detecting proxy settings. Don't know if that makes a difference in anyone's analysis of this.

By the way, by creating another user do you mean for the computer or internet log in user. Forgive me I am not very technically able. I know windows 98 is different than xp or 2000 with this.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on June 24th, 2004 02:12:22 PM
I have tried everything above, and I still can't get on the internet and I still keep getting that flashing message. I am using XP. I am going crazy with this!!!!
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on June 25th, 2004 11:38:40 AM
Download and run CWShredder. It removes CoolWebSearch and many of it's variants from your system. It work for me on a XP Pro.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on June 25th, 2004 04:24:08 PM
I have the same problem on my system at home. I'd like to know where or how it got on my system.
I want to send a Special Thanks for the post to the person running Windows 2000 Professional because that's what I have at home. Now, I won't waste Friday night on trying to fix the problem.

Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on June 29th, 2004 07:12:20 PM
Its easy to get rid of. I downloaded CWShredder and it got rid of it. Everything started working fine as soon as it was done.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on June 30th, 2004 09:36:32 AM
I had this problem on my Windows 98 machine ... and in trying to eliminate it ... I found a 2nd version of Internet Explorer had been written to my hard drive. It said Internet Explorer followed by some weird number. I found it through the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, removed it and my problem was solved. Hope this helps you.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on June 30th, 2004 02:42:34 PM
You can also try this... It appears that the company www.drsnsrch.com is the one putting the registry entries into the PC when you visit some websites. The company's product ShopNav, is the culprit. If you go to their website, you can see the uninstall instruction under 'Support'. It will give you a couple of registry entries to run and remove the specific lines. It replaces it back with the default microsoft message
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on June 30th, 2004 05:44:51 PM
Update to the post above at 3:24 PM. Even if you remove the entries from the registry manually, there is a hidden program that runs to reupdate it perpetually. It is really really getting annoying... Anyway, you have to remove all registry entries at the root level that contains "systb.dll" or "systb.exe". And you also have to remove the program c:\windows\system32\systb.dll and systb.exe.

That should at least stop from this annoying thing to keep changing your registry setting. Then, you can run other utilities such as CWShredder and Adaware to protect your system. Good luck.

I am having the same problem here at the Residence Inn in Denver. I have tried the cwshredder, Ive tried creating a new user... NOTHING WORKS. This is driving me insane. Dial-up sucks.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 01st, 2004 05:58:44 AM
I GOT IT! Yeah, I feel your pain. I went through the same thing until last this morning. There is free software by LAVASOFT called "Ad-Aware" that found this bug and killed it, but I did have to download the newest update to Ad-aware since it didn't get it on the first. Very small and quick to download too, and I'm on a 26K connection (Yes, I live in the boonies). This bug looks to be in the Registry according to that "Ad aware" scan. It found 26 things on my computer, but there are probably 10 or so reg entries total, that probably belonged to this bug. I'm not an advertiser or anything, i'm just a regular dude who happens to work as an I.T. Analyst with a local hospital, but hey if it fixes the problem, I thought I could pass it on. I do know that this "Ad Aware" software was recently reviewed in "PC World" magazine. I think you can find it at www.pcworld.com. Did I mention it also found a few other interesting spyware files. My browser runs better now too. It's almost like a virus scan but it looks for Data Miners, Advertisers, spyware and other malicious B.S... I hope the FCC reels these jerks in.

Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 01st, 2004 03:14:12 PM
I posted early, with Windows 98. I tried changing users, I tried Ad Aware. I deleted the alternate explorer. Nothing worked. My adaware program was from a disk in PC World magazine. It has not been updated since Feb. Since i can not get online to update it I am out of ideas. If I can get a friend to download CWShredder and update my adaware I will try that. An other ideas?
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 02nd, 2004 03:19:23 PM
Hey, I went under add/remove programs and found the bad Internet Explorer and Outlook express files. I treid to delete them, but it said "there was an error trying to uninstall this patch". AHH!! does anyone know what I should do now? System restore has worked in the past but I tried it again today and it did not fix the problem. Thanks in advance for your help.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 03rd, 2004 05:51:32 PM
You could start the computer in safe mode and then try to go to add/remove programs again and see if you can remove them from there. You get to safe mode by pressing F8 when the computer starts. Also, deleting the files from the registry is not that difficult, just be careful. Go to start, run and in the blank type in regedit. When the registry screen opens (you can tell because you will see words like HKEY_USERS, etc...Go to edit, find - when the screen opens type in badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com and wait. Then you can delete all the files in the folder except the default folder. Then from the other threads you need to run the file, find and look for systb.exe and systb.dll and delete all those files. I have not tried this yet on my pc (I'm running XP), but plan to do so when I get home later today. I don't know how this started but I agree it is a nasty thing and I resent those who think messing with people's computers is fun....sheesh
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 05th, 2004 01:44:40 AM
if you can't download the update to ad-aware, the best solution (for win2k/xp users) is this: open your control panel, go to add/remove programs, find internet explorer, click the add/remove button. you'll get a window asking if you want to restore your previous version of ie or if you want to repair your current installation. choose whichever you prefer - they will both work, though i recommend you use the repair option. reboot, and the changes that trojan made to your ie will be gone. make sure you get a good virus scanner and a program like ad-aware to keep yourself safe in the future.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 05th, 2004 02:30:47 AM
Thank you, Anonymous Ghost. Perhaps you could help me a bit further. Your above adviced apparently resolved my first problem. Now, however, when I try to log onto the Internet, the following address shows up on my address line (which prompts a "page cannot be displayed" page):
http://if.searchcentrix.com/searchcat.jsp?p=98567&appid=21&type=dns&id=15053520919378227&url=if.searchcentrix.com

Thanks for your help.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 05th, 2004 01:09:48 PM
UMMM... Those Internet Explorer things you are deleting are UPDATES to Internet Explorer. Dont delete those they fix security holes and the like in the browser. No wonder you are having so many issues. If anyone else deleted the updates you can get em back at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ .
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 06th, 2004 02:55:36 PM
Just for windows 98 info, the above repairing of internet explorer does not work, at least it did not for me. I also deleted it and tried to restore it. I am still waiting for an updated ad-aware from a friend to try.

I have the same problem. I'm running windows xp. Tried everything listed above, still no use. I tried the regedit, but can't find anything under the name of grandstreet. Any other suggestions?

Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 08th, 2004 01:11:07 PM
This is one nasty idea by a very sick person! I got it on July 3rd and spent 3 days trying to get rid of it! I tried everything you have listed so far and my son is a pc tech! I even reinstalled windows xp pro! It seems like the most problems are increasing on xp and xp pro! It would not let me system restore, change my ip address, and everytime I uninstalled and reinstalled explorer it immediately rerouted my system again! I finally bought a new ethernet card last night and installed it after disabling the old one and it worked. Does anyone know where this thing lies in wait!
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 09th, 2004 07:31:39 PM
Ok I had same issue and got rid of it.
Simple 4 Steps :

1) Find systb.dll and systb.exe

2) Rename those files and put under different location.

3) Open Regedit and goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search
CustomizeSearch - remove value
SearchAssistant - remove value
It is generally some w3...drnsearch...blah...com

4) Search rest of the Internet Explorer\Search entries and delete
CustomizeSearch - remove value
SearchAssistant - remove value

I removed badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com using these steps. Just to confirm steps and find exact solution, I renamed the files back and ran systb.exe and badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com got back. I repeated steps mentioned above and got rid of it again!!!
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 09th, 2004 09:22:44 PM
A friend of mine had this problem just yesterday. She could get onto the internet "sometimes" but not all the time, and the grandstreetinteractive showed up in her browser when she was locked out of the net. I had her install AdAware 6.0 from www. lavasoft.com, and once she got it running and updated it, it took care of the problem (and 230 other spyware/adware things as well!).
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 10th, 2004 11:19:19 PM
Alrighty Let me give you a few things of What I did to No resolve. This was my friends Machine Mind you Running Win XP. I uninstalled Reinstalled IE. No Good. I ran system restore twice to TWO previous Dates. No Good. Msconfig'd and End-Tasked all the Spyware Running. No good. Uninstalled all the Spy Ware I could find. no Good. Searched the Registry for the URL. Nothing in there. She's not able to get online so She can't download Ad-aware(which I LOVE on my home pc) Or Spybot - Search and Destroy(which I hear good things about). I've read TWO possible Solutions on Other Sites. ONE. Add Badurl.... to the List of Trusted Sites(which I don't LIKE doing) and/or Try Renaming your Rundll32.exe And rebooting. Ether of these SHOULD get you back online. From their download the approiate Spyware Remover to CLEAN your system of this Nightmare. I've done tech support for 2 years and I've NEVER seen something this F'in annoying. I've yet to try ether of those Since I need to get back in touch with her. BUT. Just wanted to let you guys know what I did.-Dorkbot
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 14th, 2004 12:10:51 AM
Don't get too cozy. First time a reboot solved, then we bought a new ethernet card and still didn't work so hooked up with USB and is running now. Slow though and I want ethernet back. Any clue where it came from and a quick, SURE cure?
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 14th, 2004 04:56:48 PM
The AdAware program worked for the barurl grandstreet interactive deal!

:} Thank goodness
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 14th, 2004 06:51:41 PM
Just to let anyone know, all the above options worked for me except Ad-Aware. I hacked the registry, removed the systb.dll and systb.exe and removed the GSIM entry in the Add/Remove programs as well, rebooted and was perfect.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 15th, 2004 02:37:54 AM
Finally I got rid of this !!! Go to http://www.shopnav.com/uninstall2.html. Download the uninstaller (Automatic Software Uninstall (v3b)) and RESTORE MICROSOFT® SEARCH BUTTON SETTINGS. After this I am not getting any more flashes of badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com

Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 15th, 2004 06:33:25 PM
OK, I've had this stupid thing for 3 weeks now and I've about had it. Here is the MAIN thing that I have found with the badurl. You MUST have Spybot Version 1.3, I only had 1.2...which was only two weeks old. The main guy you are looking for is "IE plugins". Anything else that bot finds needs to be fixed as well. I also had so many other problems, basically my computer was taken over by anonymous people. But try the spybot version 1.3, it is the only thing that has worked for me. CWshredder did nothing for me as well
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 15th, 2004 06:37:58 PM
One other thing, if you are able to get rid of this problem I would incourage you to immediately upgrade all of your windows updates. We figure that this malware is able to enter your system because of certain critical holes in the windows system. Upgrade everything, and hopefully the problem will be solved.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 16th, 2004 09:47:33 AM
Ok update on Windows 98 problem with this...I renamed the systb.dll file and reboot that stopped any grandstreetinteractive flashing, so that seems to work but my problem is deeper I also have errorplace which also stops you from searching on the internet. Question to above posting by Dhina, how did you download from that website because this virus stops me from even showing I have a connection. Did you have a friend download it and burn you this uninstaller?
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 17th, 2004 02:52:27 AM
When I open my explorer with out an internet connection then it flashes with badurl gra.... But when I connect to the internet and if I open IE, I was not having any problems. I downloaded that from my laptop itself. The file is very small. If you want I can email that to you.

This website has been phenomenally helpful to me. Just today I discovered the bad url redirecting my computer in an endless loop. I lucked out in a web search to this website and thanks to everyone's experiences and help I downloaded ad aware, and cwshredder. I then uninstalled ShopNav also. Fingers crossed that my problems are now solved. I am not computer literate at all and some of the advice here was a little technical but it was great to have all the advice! One thing I still haven't discovered is HOW THE HECK I got it! Thanks all. Patty in VA
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 17th, 2004 03:35:02 PM
Dhina: I've downloaded the unistaller, but how do you restore the search button settings? When I click the search button, the ShopNav stuff is still there, as well as in the Customize window.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 18th, 2004 02:52:49 AM
Besides the link I gave you, in the same page, http://www.shopnav.com/uninstall2.html you could see a link "Search Button Uninstall (Restore to Microsoft Settings)". You could download that and execute to restore the defaults. The one I mentioned you earlier is for removing the flash only.

Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 20th, 2004 11:30:25 AM
I got HiJacked also.
I checked firewall (OutPost) Internet was trying to connect to:

xlime.offeroptimizer.com
download.abetterinternet.com
master.mx-targeting.com
toolbar.drsnsrch.com

I had to turn off firewall & reboot. I then was able to connect to home page Google then turned firewall back on.
Downloaded newest Spybot, it found:

IE Plugin: Executable
C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe
IE Plugin: Data
C:\WINDOWS\lu.dat
IE Plugin: Library
C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll
VX2/f: Browser helper object

Spysweeper it found:

registry traces of: IEPlugin
toolbar.drsnsrch.com Hijacker
Twain-Tech
vx2 (Transponder)

These two programs seem to get rid of the pest so far.
You can go here to remove IEPlugins manually

Ok. My daughters PC had this POS, and here is what worked for me. First, let me state I am very wary of deleting dll files etc, and deleting files of any sort to fix.. so... Luckily, as the user stated above, there was a "guest" account created on the PC (WINXP)Log into that, no badurl.gran..xx.... Loaded the latest updates from spybot, adaware, and loaded cwshredder for the first time. Ran all 3 including the reboots asked by adware. How in the world can people go to websites to download programs that gets rid of the virus when you have the virus blocking you out?!?!
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 24th, 2004 11:55:14 AM
I went to:
http://www.zone-x.com/spybot.php
Follow the directions, and see if it works for you. I tried some of the other things suggested in these threads without success. Perhaps, those things coupled with these downloads fixed the problem.
I could not get onto the internet either, at least not with Explorer. But I went through Netscape, and I was able to get on and download these spyware programs with no problem. The virus evidently did not affect Netscape. Good luck.

I contracted this nasty bug/trojan/worm/hijacker today on my XP system. Although I appreciate everyone's suggestions, none of them worked for me. Finally I ran a piece of software called BHODemon that found files mentioned above that I couldn't locate through standard methods or with Ad-aware or Spysweeper. With this software you can disable the files which I did and now I'm up and running again. If you can't find this software somewhere, contact me at ssmith@congregationalhome.com and I'll see if I can send it to you. Thanks everyone.

FOUND IT! Ok if you are using an NT system, go into the TCP/IP properties and click advanced. Open Options -> IP Security. Click the Do Not Use IPSEC and the problem is solved! Its a problem that occurs when a system is set to use a server ip security protocol either by the user or by an installed software.

Had the same problem as other folks here. Deleted a file C:\windows\redir.txt that had link to grandstreetinteractive. this seems to have stopped it, at least temporarily. This isn't a complete fix - I'm sure other files and registry enties remain, but this might let you get started.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 29th, 2004 07:39:51 PM
My procedure to kill this in Win 2K Pro:

1) Run regedit and look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run

and find an exe that has a bizarre made-up name (you will not find it on the web). Delete that entry and go kill the process with the same name using Task manager.
2) Then I ran Adaware to clean up, including the VX2 remover plugin, though that did not see a VX2 infection.
3) Regedit Again: HKEY_LOCAL_USER/Software/Microsoft/InternetExplorer/Start Page and set it to about:blank. This startup URL is the root of the mess. You can also right-click on the IE desktop icon and change this in the properties, but I deleted that long ago.

I believe the demon is slain at this point.

This crap WAS DEFINITELY installed by the COMCAST self-install kit. I am now off to compose an eMail that tears them a new a-hole...

Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on July 31st, 2004 11:43:51 AM
I followed the advice of the person who suggested to download Ad-aware from lavasoft. It was free and easy to do and the scan took less than 2 minutes. It identified 74 items to be removed and the problem went away along with the annoying pop-ups i was also experiencing. I recommend this as opposed to digging in the computer and deleting files especially if you don't know what you are doing. Good luck.

Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on August 08th, 2004 10:54:42 PM
I used LavaSoft's Ad-aware. Although it helped me find and remove several "trojans," it couldn't remove systb.dll--the culprit for the flashing badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com and browser redirects. I have WindowsME. You need to boot your pc into Safe Mode and delete it manually. I have no more problems with it now. My system is finally back to normal.

After reading most of these messages, adding spybot to my growing arsenal of great free software (including AdAware) I thought how great the internet and sites like this are. Thanks to all of you for helping to solve my grandstreetinteractive problem, thanks to SpyBot and AdAware for writing such fabulous free software (I'm going to buy something from each) and thanks to Nibble Guru and other user mutual aid sites. After swearing and fantasizing about body parts I'd rip off of the perps who create these horror-story computer infections, my computer and wifi network are fit and well again and I'm seeing the world through rose colored glasses. Good job folks!!!

I am running XP and tried everything listed above, including Spybot 1.3 and while I no longer get the "badurl.grandstreet....." address, I still get the "Page(or Server) not found" message. I deleted the systb files and looked in the registry for any Grandstreet, etc files but found none. I deleted any odd-looking filenames in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run
as suggested above and still can't open a web page. When I check my internet options in the browser window, the homepage has been reset to About Blank, so I'm obviously missing something. Can anyone offer a suggestion as to what?

I am dealing with the same rediculous issue. I am having a colleague download Spy Sweeper, which he said should work on the problem. I must restate Bud's comment earlier for thanking everybody for their helpful comments. I will try some when I get home and run Ad-aware and Spybot. I filed a complaint with the IFCC, but I don't know if it will do any good. I have a 98 OS and I will let you know if this download works.

For what it's worth, I just solved this on my Dad's 2k box. Here's what I did, since I'm not sure what all fixed it...

I ran the latest adaware and removed a couple of issues it found. At this point, the network was still down so I ran the cwshredder prog mentioned above and hijackthis. Both of them did something but this didn't fix it either. I deleted all kinds of things in hijackthis that didn't seem "normal" to me. Note: do this at your own risk as you could seriously alter your setup. I wasn't concerned because I was getting to where I was going to upgrade him to XP if my fixes didn't work.

I manually deleted the grandstreet references in the registry but that didn't solve the networking issue. I finally ran that lspfix file referenced above and then rebooted and voila. Online.

Good luck --it was a serious pain.

Although we all have the same problem, it appears everyone's solution is a little different. I struggled with this one for about 4 hours trying the different suggestions before getting it resolved.

I have XP SP2 Home edition and a NetGear router. My fix consisted of running Ad-Aware 6.0, Spybot 1.3, and then having the router assign a new IP address for the node on the network.

The reason for assigning the new IP address was because the firewall had somehow been instructed to block incoming UDPs from the router IP address. I couldn't get the firewall to unblock the incoming messages! Fortunately, assigning the new IP address corrected the problem.

All's well now but, man, what a pain this was.

Thanks to everyone for the posts!

For Win98, latest Adaware and Spybot removed most offending items. I manually searched for wupdt.exe and deleted that as well. Still could not connect to the internet. Turns out that Winsock and Winsock2 were corrupted in the registry. If you do not have your Win98 CD, you might have problems. There are two occurances of each Winsock and Winsock2 in the registry. I made a backup of the registry to the desktop. Then I deleted Winsock and Winsock2 from the registry and re-installed them from my Win98 CD. I am now up and running. Thanks for all of your help.

just another 'hey i got it fixed' post. running windows 2000 on a company network. tried ad-aware which half fixed the problem (no more badurl.grandstreetinteractive, but then wouldnt access internet at all or allow to connect to various systems through progs like MSaccess or any printers...only network neighborhood connected to anything). THEN i ran spybot S&D, and it fixed it the rest of the way (FYI: the IP address change didnt work for me).

Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on September 19th, 2004 11:12:21 PM
After doing all that, and you still get a Page Not Found, you may find that IE is set to use a proxy server when there is none (since you removed it) so you get the page not found. Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Settings > Uncheck "Use a Proxy Server for This Connection" and see if that works. Unless of course you really did have a proxy server for some reason. But that was probably replaced by the malware anyway.

Jim Mooney - www.corporatecrimefighters.com

BTW, ad-aware worked fine but didn't find Everything. noAdAware found about twenty more problems, but it requires you to purchase it before it removes them. The kicker is that neither the update nor the purchase for noAdAware worked, since they seem to depend on IE, which was not working. A vicious circle. Ad-aware's update did work, though - probably ftp rather than http. Sure enough, once I removed the proxy, noAdAware updated, so it probably relies on http. But since I deleted all the crap it found by hand, then killed all the nasty cookies it also found, I didn't buy it ;')

Maybe I'll buy it next week if the raisins sell since it seemed to find more than ad-aware. Then again, since I ran ad-aware first and i found about 940 bumwares, it could be that noAdAware might not have found some of those. I'll have to try running noAdAware first next time, then see if ad-aware catches anything it misses before I decide which to get. I'm not buying Both. (I just had to buy inboxer for spam and I'm getting tired of paying for created problems.)
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on September 20th, 2004 09:52:36 AM
I finally did it! If you have gotten rid of all bugs, viruses, cookies, etc. but still can't get online, try this (only for XP)... most likely, it is a corrupt TCP stack. You need to run this fix:

I had the "flashing badurl:grandstreetinteractive" problem...downloaded and ran SPYBOT, restarted, re-ran spybot after the restart...and everything is back and running. Wish I could find and destroy these grandstreet punks...a-holes ruining the web-world for the rest of us
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on September 27th, 2004 04:09:31 AM
SPYBOT V 1.3 WORKS!!!!!

i used a file sharing service to download spybot v1.3, after i tried EVERYTHING else. I'd suggest running through all of those steps in the registry as well.. for the purpose that you might come across stuff you can rid your computer of...

but yay spybot, yay everyone for helping. if you can't get spybot, get a friend to burn a disc for ya.

Help! I know I sound stupid, but I don't know how to create a new User.

Also, I can't get on the internet to install Spybot. If I did, I would need to use the integrated Update, which requires the internet, and the problem may not be found. HELP! (By the way, this is not my computer.)

Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on October 09th, 2004 01:11:04 PM
OMG, I did it, I fricken did it.

This problem is in fact a virus and I finally fixed my computer.

OK, here it is:
Yes, it flashed badurl.grandstreetinteractive.
Yes, I couldn't connect to the internet.
Yes, my ethernet port in general didn't work.
Yes, I couldn't connect even to my home network.
Yes, every time I tried to system restore, it failed.

No, anti-spyware programs did not work, (they did, however, remove a nice chunk of spyware that came in because of the virus)
No, none of the solutions posted above worked for me. No matter what, I still couldn't connect to the internet.

If you're totally crapped out like this then listen nice and closely:

My virus program (Norton) was out of date along with its virus definitions (still dated at 2002) so I went out and bought 2005 and installed it.

I ran a system check and it found a virus under the filename loader[1].exe. The virus name is bloodhound.packer and although Norton couldn't repair the file, it quarantined it. After that, I restarted in safe mode and ran another system check and it found nothing except for the quarantined file. Then, while still in safe mode, I tried system restoring to the day before and lo and behold, my computer is awesome once again!

There are a bunch of other things I did before going out and buying the new virus protection program, but it involved a lot of sitting for hours in front of my computer and I'm pretty sure that these didn't help.

Either way, I'm totally happy again.

My email address is KickAssDwarf@yahoo.com if you guys have any questions or need more help. I am fairly computer savvy so I might be able to help even if my solution above didn't work for you.

Good luck!
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on October 09th, 2004 03:48:50 PM
I finally solved my problem.

I couldn't get to the Internet in order to download Spybot or AdAware.

Norton 2005 wasn't finding anything. (Norton Help Desk advised me that badurl is not a Virus, so Norton does not recognize it.)

Opening new accounts was no help. I still couldn't acccess the Internet.

Solution : My computer has a telephone Modem and America Online. (If you don't have AOL, pick up a free copy at the local department store and load it. Then disconnect your cable or DSL modem and attach a telephone line.

Once you access the Internet through AOL telephone modem, go to the Spybot and AdAware sites to download. (It takes about 30 minutes to download each). You can also have someone with a CD burner burn a copy for you to load into your computer.

Go to http://www.shopnav.com/uninstall2.html and download the installer (v3b) and the Restore Microsoft Search Buttons.

Then disconnect the Modem (so that no new problems are delivered into your system) and run Spybot and Adaware several times.

After all of this, the badurl was no longer appearing but I still could not get on Internet. I called my DSL provider. I went into setup and retyped my password and that reset the DSL connection. (Any playing around with your system, like Spybot or some of the other registry deletions I had attempted disconnects the DSL connection. Resetting is all that's required. Call your provider to walk you through the steps.

Help this helps.

Here's a solution that might work. Download mozilla from mozilla.org. It's like ie but from a different source. I run both on my computer and mozilla never gets infected. It's not popular enough for anyone to want to mess with it. Anyway, if you get that on you can get on the internet one way or the other and fix your ie easier.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on October 30th, 2004 08:27:24 PM
Someone at the beggining of the page posted this and it worked perfectly. Only little problem was that i couldnt rename the dll but i managed to do it using the msdos mode.

Simple 4 Steps :

1) Find systb.dll and systb.exe

2) Rename those files and put under different location.

3) Open Regedit and goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search
CustomizeSearch - remove value
SearchAssistant - remove value
It is generally some w3...drnsearch...blah...com

4) Search rest of the Internet Explorer\Search entries and delete
CustomizeSearch - remove value
SearchAssistant - remove value

I removed badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com using these steps. Just to confirm steps and find exact solution, I renamed the files back and ran systb.exe and badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com got back. I repeated steps mentioned above and got rid of it again!!!

I've had the same problem in the past, and now one of my clients has it as well. As crazy as it sounds, the way I got rid of it was by simply going to Grandstreetinteractive.com and sent them an E-mail. I politely told them tht their software was on my computer and that I would appreciate it if they would please tell me how I might remove it. The next day I had an E-mail response apologizing for the inconvenience and a quick and painless process of removal.
Give it a shot.

I had this "bug" or whatever for a total of three days. A friend suggested I use Ad-Aware and it worked! The only problem is that now when I try to login it takes me to "The page cannot be displayed"! It's been stuck like this for two days now...anyone have any idea why?
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on November 04th, 2004 03:31:39 PM
ad-aware, ad-aware, ad-aware!!!!!!!!!!

For the last couple of weeks it did not get rid of it, but today my ad-aware would not update, so I un-installed and re-installed the free version from download.com (se personal version). After updating it, it found the crap still on my system, and I am finally free of those grandstreetinteractive MF's.

Also, while perfoming the ad-aware scan, I disconnected from the Net, as an added percaution. Hope this helps.

I had adelphia high speed internet installed, now when I go to the internet browser button it redirects to finding badurl.grandstreetinteractive. Of course Adelphia cable company claims no responsibility. I have been trying to figure out what to do. I have been able to get to the homepage a couple of times but it jams up and I get partial windows or the whole page continues to jump around. Sometimes it doesn't do anything and I have to shut down the whole computer. Does anyone have any suggestions that would fix this without destroying my existing files. I have windows xp home edition.
I did a virus scan with freedom and norton both comes up ok. Help somebody!

This post has been a perfect find! I discovered the badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com yesterday morning, and spent most of the morning trying different things. I was able to use my husband's computer to search for topics and came across this one. I am running XP, and the post made July 9 at 08:31:39pm was the solution that worked for me. I've now added Ad-Aware and updated McAfee. Good luck to everyone else.

this post was great - Win XP, used all the ad aware, spybot, etc. to cleanse.
WIN IP Fix was needed too.

For anyone still having problems connecting to the internet - after the above steps - try one more thing (worked for me)
Go to control panel, Network options... If you are connecting via a home LAN or router - check to make sure the Ethernet LAN icon shows 'Enabled' (mine had become 'disabled'. Just enable it, and everything worked. Good luck

I had the same problem.I was using MSN as my home page. It wouldn't load up properly (flashing badurl.comgrandstreetinteractive. It interfered with some pages and not with others (Yahoo). I also had trouble checking email. It has been driving me crazy for about 3 months. I took the advice posted on another site and went to spybot.com. I downloaded a free 30 day trial of Spy Sweeper. Problem solved. Computer is running like new again. (no I am not selling this product - it just happens to work great). Hats off to the poster who filed the FTC Complaint. I also traced the URL through whois and sent the owners of badurl.com a nasty-gram for what ever good it will do. Try Spy Sweeper. It Works.

I just wanted to add a little help. I just fixed this problem on my partner's computer coast-to-coast logging into her computer via netmeeting. Here is one trick - the BADURL stops DNS lookups, so you can still reach websites using the IP adress. For example: the Shopnav site (for the uninstall) can be accessed at 67.18.123.162/uninstall2.html. To find any IP Address go to RUN > CMD > PING [URL].

I am not sure exactly how I fixed this problem, but I think the unistallers at shopnav did it, plus deleteing adware using Alluria. Then you must reboot. I did delete winsock2, but I think it was a mistake because after I did I could not reconnect to the Internet at all. But strangely, a system restore to that morning reinstated winsock2 AND still had the software deleted. Worked like a charm after that.. 10 hours later

a real fix for this problem. hey this just happened to me and i was really pissed, nothing suggested here worked at all. but i tried a hunch and it did actually work, here it is:

real simple, go to "system restore" and restore to the last bolded dated that you KNOW your system was working fine. for me that was about 1 day ago. after that everything is ok, for now.

Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on December 22nd, 2004 01:21:29 PM
Got the error on December 17. It is not a virus so Norton will NOT pick it up.

I could not access the internet at all, so downloading a program(s), which was suggested several times above is NOT a solution.

You can NOT rename wupdt or systb.dll files in windows. That MUST be done in DOS.

My system is working find now. How did I do it. A combination of the above suggestions.

October 30th, 2004 09:27:24 PM Suggested renaming the files while in DOS.

August 29,. 2004 at 10:52 AM
His suggestions were also used.

When I opened up the file redir.txt using a wordpad or some type of writing utility program. Those nasty words "grandstreet" were all over the place.

I went out a purchased a spy ware software and ran it on my system. Guess what? Did not find anything - probably because I already fixed it. But also I hear that spybot is a better program than the one I purchased.

I would think this is going to be disservice the company grandstreet - I know I will avoid this company like a plague from now on - I put them in the same boat as Enron and World Com. The Jack A** boat.

Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on December 27th, 2004 07:03:30 PM
My son picked up this problem using Google sometime yesterday. I ran "Search" looking for any .EXE files that were dated as of yesterday and found a "USBN.exe" file and got rid of that. Not only was his IE looking for "badurl", but his modem had been hijacked and rather than the dial-up number we use to get onto the internet, it was set for 1-888-200-5263. I have not called that number to see what it is yet. Used Windows XP "System Restore" to reset his computer to December 11th. Ran another search and found "badurl" as a "prefetch" file and was able to delete it from there. These mother
f_ _ kers should get the death penalty for messing up computers like this. One way to prevent modem hijacking is to pick up a program that will only allow dialing one phone number. Not sure if anything like that will work for AOL or NetZero users because there could be several phone calls made prior to hooking up online. Found a program called "Stop-It-Now" out of Australia that will kill calls dead if it is any number other than the one you must manually enter into Stop-It-Now each time you boot your system. Hope this helps some of you out. - Stu Tentoni, Univ. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee -

The Post above on nov. 21 at 7:26 is probably the best bet. I just downloaded the uninstall files to a cd to take up and use on my brothers computer. He is out of town and I can't try it until 1/3/04, will let you know. before you start, I would make a restore point in case it doesn't work if you are using an uninfected machine. copy the IP address and use it, it may even work fom the infected machine so it is worth a try. Here is the IP add. ( 67.18.123.162/uninstall2.html ). Try these and let us know if they work, I will let you know after Monday.

Thank you all! I have been pulling my hair out for 2 days trying to get rid of this thing. I tried a bunch of the things in your posts, but finally the ShopNav thing did the trick.

I have Windows ME and could not rename the systb.dll and .exe files and Windows ME won't let you get to a DOS prompt to do it there. I tried deleting some of the suggested items in regedit without success, too.

It was the November 21st post by cruisemates that saved me. THANK YOU. Hopefully this thing is gone for good. I'd love to get my hands on the guy who started this thing!!!
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by dm on January 09th, 2005 04:06:09 PM
Well, cruisemates idea may work for some, but this thing is preventing me from getting connected to anything on the web. The IP address idea gives a connection refused message. I also downloaded the remove programs to my computer and copied them to cd and AdAware & Norton to Zip, the uninstalls don't work from the cd & although the AdAware & Norton worked, I can't connect to the update sites for definitions. any further Ideas would be appreciated.

I believe my next step is going to be to contact the US Attorney and see if there is anything they can do. I am also going to file a report with the FBI Internet Fraud Division, this may not qualify, but I think it may.

I have been battling this problem since last summer. I did lots of research for what to remove from the registry and what files to look for. Even after all that, I still would start getting popups and connection problems. And it still said that it was connecting to badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com. I searched the whole computer for "grandstreet" and it was absolutely nowhere. This week, we could get on but we'd browse for about 3 or 4 minutes and then couldn't connect to any sites. Also browsing was SLOW.

Yesterday, I downloaded SpyBot S&D. It found about 20 different adware/spyware components that I had missed. I let it remove all the suspect files and registry settings and now everything is GREAT. Super fast connection, no pop-ups. Happy.

If you are completely unable to connect, search for the file redir.txt and remove the contents. A few months ago I would have the problem of opening the browser and then it would just close or shut the connection. I removed grandstreet from the redir.txt file and at least was able to connect again. Also make sure you don't have any extra firewall or Zone Alarm running because this bug won't allow you to connect to a site while Zone Alarm is on.

Good luck to those of you still battling this. It's evil, evil, evil.

I had the same issue come up tonight. Luckly I had a few other computers in the house and was able to find this site. I ran Ad-Aware 6 and it found the pesky files in the registry (similar to the July 4/04 8:31 posting). I cleaned it out and restarted the computer and everything works like a charm again.

Just wanted to let everyone know had this prob for 3 days, finally i read over these posts and got it fixed. I used AdAdware, it didnt help, got CWShredder and Spybot 1.3, this got rid of it but couldnt connect to internet, so went to regedit. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search, and deleted Customize Search and Search Assistant, then shut down, unplugged my cable modem, let sit for 5 minutes, and booted everything back up. Now it all works!! HOORAY! Thanks for everyones help, and I hope whoever came up with this badurl.grandstreetinteractive roughts in HELL!!
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on January 21st, 2005 02:14:45 PM
I had the same problem. Three things I did - two of which seem to be common here.

1) Lavasoft Adaware - did a deepscan

2) Spybot S&D - Ran, corrected problems and immunized

and finally,

3) Downloaded and ran "Registry Mechanic", since I don't like screwing with my registry. It also found some other issues adversely affecting my system performance. url below.

Now I'm free of bugs and run this on an every other day basis.

I FINALLY got it to go away!!! I am not computer savvy and my server actually helped me out. First, by giving me this address, then I found
Adware. The weird thing is, that each time I tried to access Lavasoft, I would get the "grandstreet" flash, like it know I was trying to eliminate it. I actually ran three different "killers" Norton 2005(trial), then Spy Spotter, then the Adware Filter. The nice thing about the Adware is I can get a second license for my son's computer at a fraction of the cost of the original program and they will send you a disc. I worked for me! Good luck to All!
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on January 24th, 2005 08:50:08 PM
I have tried everything but this sucker does not go away. I tried CWShreeder, Ad-ware, SpyBot but no luck.

Any computer geek who can help.

big thanks to everyone who's posted on this page since last summer, thank god you did or i never would have been able to figure it out. Finally got this off my pc by doing a combination of suggestions printed here. Downloaded spybot s&d off roommates computer and it picked up some things adaware had missed. Also went through regedit looking for and subsequently found systb.exe and systb.dll, which i deleted. I've been up and running for a few days now with no problems.

I've tried everything on here, but the bug keeps coming back. It seems like its recreating itself. and the shopnav, mysearchrequest, keeps popping this back into my registry. I have and updated adaware/updated spybot. What is constantly putting this in my system over and over again?

Trying to connect to Netscape, progress bar starts as if it working, then regresses and message in lower left pops up: badurl.ieplugin.com...then nothing. I am completely stuck and have exhausted most efforts, system restore, Norton...please help! Can't even get on to download Adaware or sim.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on February 02nd, 2005 08:03:32 PM
Ad-ware.com's free download (which I saved to a CD from my office computer) fixed this first try but these bastards should die a slow death.
RE: badurl.ieplugin.com by Anonymous Ghost on February 02nd, 2005 10:35:41 PM
Ok great...will try. What and how do these things infiltrate even if you have a program like Norton running? And I try to be as careful as possible when surfing. Unbelievable. Thank you so much. Will try.

Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by cjmdwyer on March 01st, 2005 10:15:19 AM
My computer started doing this as soon as I got hooked up to hi-speed internet (cable) this weekend. If I re-boot it will work for a while but it goes back to this again. E-mail wont work at all, it doesn't connect to the server and times out. Cable company says its not their problem, contact microsoft. I have run almost all the suggested programs (except hijack this) and tried to do the registry edit deal, but can't find either of the files I am supposed to search for, and my regedit program pops up and then goes away! Any ideas????
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on March 10th, 2005 02:18:41 PM

Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on April 17th, 2005 07:07:19 PM
Nothing works for me so far. I've unplugged the router and modem for 60 seconds, but that didnt' work. I created a new user account, and still had problems with IE, I've even manually deleted everything AdAware found in my registry settings that was causing this. It just repopulates itself back into the registry. I cannot get rid of this file on my other computer.

Someone on here mentioned that their virus software picked it up... any idea which manufacturer this is?
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on April 21st, 2005 04:53:36 PM

Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on May 05th, 2005 12:51:01 PM
ive had this grandstreetinteractive problem for probably about 3 months now, but it wouldn't block my internet all the time. whenever it would, i would just restart my computer and the internet would work fine again for a few days. i finally got fed up with it, and found the systb.dll file, deleted it, and now my internet does not work at all, even when i restart! apparently i can still ping the internet, according to my tech friend, but im not really sure what that means. and.. when i looked again at my computer, the systb.dll file is back. any ideas on why deleting this file would have completely blocked my internet?
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on May 06th, 2005 04:06:34 PM
I tried everything to get rid of this, everything. I use WindowsXP Home. While I did get rid of it, IE Explorer would still not go to certain sites like Yahoo and Google. It also stopped me from searching my own hard disk with Windows Explorer. Finally, I did a system restore and brought the computer back by about four days. This did the trick. Then I went immediately redownloaded all of the Ad Ware programs mentioned in these posts and ran them.
Re: Explorer flashes badurl.grandstreetinteractive.com by Anonymous Ghost on May 07th, 2005 09:19:44 PM
A few suggestions for this:
- Always install an alternate browser like firefox or netscape in the pc. This will help enormously as IE is out of action with the badurl issue. Keep the other browsers up to date, particularly when you upgrade the windows to a newer version. You may not use them for anything but they are useful when IE is hit with something.
- There is a superb article on spyware topic: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm. Read this.
-- Install winpatrol. Of course, you need a way to access the website and this is where other browsers come in. If you cannot get to Firefox or netscape, order a cd from them and then you can install! http://www.winpatrol.com/ as mentioned in the above article. This one detects the home page/search redirection. Using winpatrol you can disable the spy software from redirection. This will enable IE to work again.
-- Install Microsoft Antispyware (beta now) and possibly a later version when available from microsoft website. Ironically, you can install this antispyware using internet explorer(IE) only but IE is out of action with the badurl stuff! Anyway, with winpatrol detection and disabling, IE works and so install Microsoft antispyware. Microsoft Antispyware detects the badurl problem and prevents the home page/search redirection.
-- You can try registry update and other techniques but for me, none of that worked.
