XP and Office 97 cannot installConfiguration:
I cannot install Office 97 Pro, Bus, or even a copy of Word from a Works CD on my newly acquired, but previosly owned Dell Latitude L400 laptop, which is now running Win XP home after a hard drive change, reformat, and clean full install of Win XP Home. The install screen appears and the CD can be read, but when I choose to try to install Word, Excel, Publisher, Access, etc. The CD spins for a moment, then stops, then it just does nothing as if I had not even selected a task. No error code. The CD contents can be browsed by the .exe's will not run. I am using the same external CD-RW/DVD combo drive I used to install Win XP the previous day with little incident. I have spent the entire day searching the internet for help with this and tried many suggestions but none work. I have the same version of XP on my desktop computer along with Ofc 97 and it works fine. I thouhgt maybe XP's SP2 was to blame, so I remobved it but no luck. Same old.

Additional Comments:
I also have Avast virus, and zone alarm firewall, outlook express, internet explorer 6, on the laptop so far.
Operating System : Microsoft XP Home
CPU/Processor : 700
RAM : Actual:192 MB
Additional Comments : Dell Latitude L400 laptop

Office 97 does not install on XPSP2 system

I have the same problem so I went to the web and found this...

My company recently had this problem - I discovered the solution while trying to manually register 'htmlmarq.ocx'

Open regedit and browse to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options

You should see htmlmarq.ocx and htmlmm.ocx separate keys. Rename them to something else, ie. htmlmarq.tmp and htmlmm.tmp.

You will now be able to install Office 97, including the HTML option, without incident.

DISCLAIMER: I don't know what this section of the registery does or why these files were apparently blocked (intentionally or accidently), but this solution worked flawlessly for me. If you feel uncomfortable, I'm betting you can rename the keys back to the originals and office will work, but if you need to reinstall, you'll possibly have to rename them again.

Hope this helps...

Your renaming to htmlmarq.tmp and htmlmm.tmp worked. However, I'm unable to install SP2 for Office 97 with SP1. No error code or log file is given.

Hello, I, like Roger cannot
find the htmlmarq.ocx and htmlmm.ocx on my XP machine. The strange thing is that I installed Publisher 97 when I first got this computer and it worked great. In uninstalled it today, because it would not let me make a simple calendar Peggy

Managed to find an easier, and safer work-around.
Simply do a Custom Install and remove the Web Authoring tools.
Office 97 now installs perfectly.

Thank you, anonymous post of Jan 21st. I did a Typical install ticking all options except "Web Page Authoring(HTML)".Worked well. Previously I had Htmlmarq.ocx message,Setup not completed, and only Word Excel and Access downloaded.

I have experienced the same problem and I am curious. To solve this problem is it necessary to uninstall Office 97 Pro before I rename the htmlmarq.ocx and htmlmm.ocx keys?

Thanks for your assistance in this matter.
