boot.malmo - boot-virus problemConfiguration:
Hi.

I have been exposed to a rather old virus. From -94 actually. Its called boot.malmo. It infects the mbr. Im using norton antivirus. Norton cant remove it in windows, of course.

But norton canīt even create any rescue disks etc for running from boot. But even if it could. It would be of no use for me. I dont even have an old diskdrive. =(

I downloaded som prg from f-secure, which had to be run from "dos". It ran a viruscheck in "dos" and cleared the mbr etc. (or so it claimed)

I made a boot-cd containing win98 boot-disk, on my laptop. (its only my stationary computer thats infected)

But since Iīm using ntsf, I cant see my hd in "dos". I even tried to boot from the 98-cd, i made, and access the files from cd too (i burned the files from f-secure on cd). But after booting in my fake dos, and running the prg f-secure.exe. the prg freezed, and complained about there being no a:.
and I couldnt proceed.

I dont know what to do. Is this whole ntsf-thing really this crappy? U cant even format ur hd from a boot-cd/disk. U have to use your windows install cd.?

But as Iīve read, even if I actually could access my hd in "dos", formatting my hd wont work. Since the mbr isnt affected by the format-commando. Even fdisk wont do here.

What do I do now? Is a real formatting the only way? Isnt there a tool for people in my situation? There has to have been people with viruses in mbr, using win xp and ntsf.

I have tried other virus prg briefly. But with no luck. I was hoping any of them had a cure.

Curse to microsoft for removing dos in xp!!!! =) And by the way. Plz help me guys. Ur my last hope...

fdisk *should* work for what you need. There's a little known switch for fdisk - fdisk /mbr - clears the main boot record.

You can get a freeware utility called ntfsdos to read ntfs partitions from dos. A paid version allows you to write to these.

But I'd recommend going to grisoft.com and downloading their AVG Free version. Very likely, it will remove this malware.

BTW, NTFS is not crappy, it's just different. It has huge advantages over FAT32.

Oops, forgot the links:
That NTFSDOS is available from

Re: boot.malmo - boot-virus problem by Anonymous Ghost on April 25th, 2004 02:50:11 PM
I just experienced the same problem. The solution is easier than you think. Boot the computer from the xp cd and go into repair mode. You'll get a c:\windows> prompt. Type "fixboot" and press enter. That's it!

Re: boot.malmo - boot-virus problem by Anonymous Ghost on May 11th, 2004 01:42:55 AM
Just experienced the same problem on Win XP, my solution is to boot from the XP CD, when prompted press R to go to repair mode, at the c:\windows> prompt, type "fixmbr" and press enter. you'll get a warning messege which you can accept, and thats it. Just reboot the system and you are home and dry...NOTE! I tried the "fixboot" but it didnt work. so I used "fixmbr" instead.

Hi all,

This virus has plagued me for two years and I’ve tried all the tips above without any results including formating my HD several times. I have windows XP which seems the hardest to clean. However now I found something that work for me and I thought I should share it with you since your must be just as frustrated as I was.

Go to http://vil.nai.com/vil/virus-4e.asp and download emscan.zip. Do this on a non infected computer like on work or school. Unpack the material and put in on a floppy or cd drive what ever you prefer. Now take a NEW disk and go to the windows explorer and create a boot disk (Choose format disk and then create boot disk). Now you have two disks, one clean boot disk and one disk with a simple virus scanner. Important! Lock the disk so they donīt get infected when you put it in your infected computer.

Turn of your computer for several seconds so the virus is cleared from memory. Then boot with the boot disk. Then put in the virus scanner disk and type BOOTSCAN C: /boot /clean or BOOTSCAN /ald /boot /clean (ALD = all local drives) if you have several drives. Now take out the disk and reboot your computer. You now have a clean computer again.

How can 1 old virus create such a long standing problem. Surely the person who wrote it ought to be prosecuted and made to find a cure or all those computer buffs should be able to do something? I guess it doesn't make money for them? Anon

Re: boot.malmo - boot-virus problem by Anonymous Ghost on February 25th, 2005 06:36:43 AM
Very Easy: Boot from your XP or Win2000 CD and enter the setup mode. Then Choose to repair using Recovery Console. This takes U to DOS. Type a Command "fixmbr" and Accept then "Fixboot" and Accept. If this is done then Type exit and restart your system. After this make sure your AV programs are up to date and do regular scans

Re: boot.malmo - boot-virus problem by Anonymous Ghost on December 15th, 2005 12:31:30 AM
For Windoze XP:
1) Follow all the steps as above till step 3(of course with an XP
installation CD)
2) In step 4, DON'T use "fixmbr"! The sky will indeed fall down on your
head!! Messed up someone's machine thoroughly well and still haven't
figured how to restore it to its former state(dual boot,knoppix-XP, any
ideas??). Please use "fixboot" instead. Some warnings will appear but
still do proceed. Things will be fine.
5) After that, type exit and the machine will reboot. The infection
will have gone.
Re: boot.malmo - boot-virus problem by Anonymous Ghost on February 17th, 2006 05:15:28 PM
I did exactly what they said: Boot from your installation CD (I used win 2000) then use recovery console. Type in "fixmbr and accept then type "fixboot" and accept then i rebooted and it was gone.
Re: boot.malmo - boot-virus problem by Anonymous Ghost on August 08th, 2006 08:34:55 AM
For tose whose HDD have bootmalmo boot using a windows 98 disk or cd. At the command prompt type fdisk /mbr and enter. Swith off the machine, then on again. Do no restart the machine, but switch off the machine. This works on all windows platforms. You might get message saying there is no valid fat on machines with NTFS but dont worry it will work.
