Big Big Problem by Anonymous Ghost on November 06th, 2002 10:22:39 PM
I don't know if this has been the problem with any of you guys but i really need some help. I don't know what kind of virus this could be, maybe not even a virus just a bug but I will give you some symptoms.

First, I had spyware and I got Adaware to remove them all. I don't know if this was the reason that my KaZaa was not working any more but anyway. I deleted KaZaa and tried reinstalling it. After installing it again I ran KaZaa and it said that a part of the program is missing, it needs to be reinstalled. I did it like 4 times and still says the same thing.

Another problem i noticed is; when i go to my compuer and go to my documents, they have a different icons. Every icon for all differnt extensions is switched. For example: The mp3's have Write icons, the Txt have Realplayer icons and so on (everything is changed).
Another BIG BIG problem i noticed was that I cannot check any webbased email.
At first it was only hotmail but i realized that it was because my IE did not show a cipher strength at all. I reinstalled the IE and still nothing. However, not only is HOTMAIL not working but other webbased email programs are not working.

Another problem i noticed: I have a CABLE modem (OPTIMUM ONLINE) and i wanted to install the Noroton Personal Firewall but when i ran it said that the system is being kept from another program or virus so it changes back the setting.

Another thing is that it sometimes starts IE in www.xupiter.com as my home link.....WHY?????????

I don't konw what to do guys, if you know any solutions please help.

Re: Big Big Problem by Anonymous Ghost on November 12th, 2002 04:03:03 AM
You have many problems removed when you remove Xupiter. Use Spybot which does the job well.

For different icons:
Well, it may be that the icon cache might have got corrupted. You can force windows to rebuild it, by an option provided in TweakUI from Microsoft.com

For Kazaa / Morpheous you may use DietKazaa and party!!!

But you must have the current ref file available for download on their website. http://www.lavasoft.de/

You might also want to do what I did and file a complaint against xupitor with the IFCC - Internet Fraud Complaint Center: http://www1.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp

Go to your BIOS settings and disable BIOS write protect. Then Win98 will be able to write to the MBR properly.

Xupiter/Sqwire by Anonymous Ghost on January 26th, 2003 08:21:14 PM
I have been invaded by the Xupiter toolbar twice and successfully removed it twice. Now I've got Sqwire, which I heard is a new varient of Xupiter. Yeah, I think I've learned a lesson!! Here is my problem. The little bugger will not allow me to download Spybot or any browser hijacker programs I've found on the net. I've tried a bunch of mirror sites to download spybot but I get the same thing. (a little trip to sqwire) Anybody have any suggestions? I have never messed with the registry before.

Xupiter by Anonymous Ghost on January 29th, 2003 12:42:10 PM
Ad-Aware did not pick up Xupiter (new version in Feb. is supposed to). I downloaded Spybot and presumably it is taken care of. While I had it I could not surf from the address bar but could get places via bookmarks so I always went to reliable search engines and used links from there. I got to Spybot via Google. This might work for some of you.

Okay I have attempted all three removal programs. Xuipters removal tool will not even complete the download. I have to get this off my co-workers PC. these are all Win 2000 machines. I'm not scared of the registery so if that is where I need to go, then please throw me a bone
SQWIRE by Anonymous Ghost on February 04th, 2003 07:20:17 AM
I am at this very moment trying to rid myself of the SQWIRE PROBLEM. SPYBOT didn't work on it even though it worked on XUPITER. I still have my search loading with it and cannot custimize it at all. I have cleaned the registry, removed anything that looks like SQ in any enries in my reg, deleted any thing that seems to be related anywhere on my PC. Still the search boots up with SQWIRE. I am still working on it but it seems they have tweaked it to make it even more difficult to remove. Some how I think this is on the verge of hacking. I was NEVER asked if I wanted to add, switch, download anything. I think we need to start thinking of a few legal ways of stopping Xupiter and similar programs!!!
SQWIRE...cont'd by Anonymous Ghost on February 04th, 2003 08:07:29 AM
I finally removed it. If you are comfortable messing with your registry you may want to give it a try after you have used spybot and removed the SQWIRE file in your C:/Windows/ProgramFiles. Once you have removed everything that you can find, open the registry. Do a find under editt. Make sure the 3 LOOK AT boxes are marked then proceed to enter SQWIRE ( or XUPITER if that is what you are trying to remove and spybot didn't do it.) It will take several runs to get all the keys removed but after you have finished removing the keys you will have to re-install IE over the IE you already have installed. All it will do is repair what has been removed with the original values. It may take a couple of times of re-installing because I received an error message error on my first re-install. After you have it installed try the search. You should be able to customize it with the original search engines at this point.

I hope this helps some of you. I know I am quite tired of trying to keep this bullsh** off of my PC. So until their next attempt at hi-jacking, I bid you ado!!
THANK YOU!!! by Anonymous Ghost on February 04th, 2003 05:07:28 PM
Whoever described how to remove the "SQWIRE" crap, THANK YOU!!! I noticed this thing on my IE toolbar and needless to say, it led me here to remove that piece of !@#$. I too think that this type of hacking should be illegal. I didn't sign up for anything, as I don't sign up for anything at all thanks to these type of A-Hole marketing ...etc. Can't depise them enough. Anyways, your description and method worked great. Took me 10 mins what could have taken me hours - and I'm at work cleaning up my PC!!
Boot Sector Virus by vishallagdev on February 07th, 2003 08:27:30 AM
My harddisk show Bad Sectors.......
On formatting (format.com) it never detects any bad sectors......First bad sectors were only in C drive but slowly it got into D,E,F drive.....
I deleted the partitions and Re partioned my HD...while partitioning it gave msg Boot Sector Virus? i said continue .... and the partiotion was compleated.... and again its showing Bad sectors...... any solution.......
the data in the HD was copied to other HD without any problem... No error was found.....
SQWIRE and the saga continues!!!!! by Anonymous Ghost on February 08th, 2003 02:33:47 PM
I undoubtedly received this piece of crap again. Since it is like a vulture and you have no say so about when and if it attacks...I finally got fed up and sent them this lovely email:

I don't know how I manage to keep getting your toolbar because I do not agree to download it. This is the 20th time I have had to delete this mess and reintall what I WANT!!! If I have this problem again...regardless of where it came from....I will see if I can't get something done legally about this intrusive...and bordering on hacking.....useless toolbar/download. ( Maybe you should think about the way this is distributed.....more people would be willing to use it if it wasn't forced on them. And having the download start without the user's knowledge is extremely sneeky and under-handed. Please DO NOT try to claim that we have to say we agree to the download. I saw this one trying to download and could not stop it. It was freezing up my whole PC. I believe this software could actually be classified as hacking and even as extreme as a virus due to the fact that it takes over certain aspects of the PC!!!)

I will also be posting this complaint on any forum that has any complaints about SQWIRE/XUPITER!!!!"

They are getting more vicious with this stuff. I had my ZoneAlarm running but the PC started acting weird, so I though I was needing to close a few programs. As soon as I did, guess what happened??? Yep....Crapiter installed. I WILL NOT LET THESE JERKS HAVE CONTROL OF MY PC!!! I worked too hard on building this PC and to let them take it over ....well it's just not going to happen!!! I will fight them with every bit of strength and knowledge I have available. ( They have pissed me off this time....IN A BIG WAY!!!!!)

BTW...you are welcome for the help. If they change again...which I am sure they will....I will let you know how to remove it as soon as I can. ( Crapiter hasn't built a program yet that I haven't been able to defeat!!!! It's one of 2 things: Either I'm just that da*ned good! ;) or their name says it all....Crapiter!!!! LOL

One thing you might try as soon as you notice you have been invaded by these (^*)^& is to re-boot using a previous registry. Do this immediatley.
Each PC may vary depending on manufacturer but here is for my Dell running Win 98se

SHUTDOWN PC, THEN TURN ON TO START BOOTUP PROCESS
WHEN KEYBOARD LIGHTS START TO FLASH HOLD DOWN
CTRL UNTIL YOU GET AN ADVANCED STARTUP MENU

OR TRY TAPPING F8

THEN CHOOSE SAFE MODE COMMAND PROMPT ONLY

YOU SHOULD GET C:
ELSE TYPE C: AND PRESS ENTER

FROM C: (type) CDWINDOWSCOMMAND (ENTER)
SCANREG /RESTORE
(CHOOSE DATE YOU WANT TO GO BACK TO AND PRESS ENTER)

FOR DELL OWNERS FIND THESE INSTRUCTIONS AT

WWW. SUPPORT.DELL.COM

ENTER SERVICE TAG ON RIGHT HAND SIDE OF WINDOW

LOOK FOR SCANREG/RESTORE

DOES ANYONE HAVE SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS TO REMOVE SQUIRE FROM REGISTRY?
PLEASE POST HERE AND/OR SEND TO JIM_JIM_50@HOTMAIL.COM
k here is the solution to boot sector write virus problem by Anonymous Ghost on February 11th, 2003 08:08:25 AM
k i had this problem and trying fdisk/ mbr didnt work. i tried reformatting and it still didnt go away. i was then forced to give it to the place i got my comp from. they told me that the problem was BAD SECTORS on my hard drve. i think that this problem occurs because u have bad sectors on ur harddrive (i think windows xp caused it). anyways there are a couple of ways u can solve this problem.
1. try to turn off boot sector virus protection.
2. if that doesnt work try to repartition ur hard drive (thats how they fixed my comp)
2. finally if that doesnt work find out what kind of harddrive u have, then go to the manufacturers website and download a diagnostic program for ur hard drive (it should be bootable). try booting up with it and scan ur hard drive with it. if it cant find anything wrong then there should be an option to do a low level format. this wil basically erase absolutely everthing in ur hardrive and basically rebuild it. i should warn u that this should only be used as a last option because u could end up screwin ur harddrive even more.
also remember that whenever u put a boot disk into a computer make sure that it is write protected (the disk should have two holes in it)

UNREADABLE C DRIVE HELP!!!!!! by kampartist on March 02nd, 2003 12:34:14 AM
OK here is my problem i have no idea what is wrong with the computer. I ran a norton scan off of an A: drive floppy yet no virus was found.

Bootvirus screwed up my soundcard?! by Anonymous Ghost on April 27th, 2003 06:59:06 PM
I've got a bootvirus on my comp, I've kind of not done anything about it because it didn't bother me to much. but now I can't get any sound from my comp to my stereo(checked all the cables and all the other stuff to. so I tried to upgrade my drivers but the comp told me that I didn't have a soundblaster card on my comp. which is annoying because I do have a soundblaster card, and if I check my soundcard through the controlpanel it says that I have a soundblastercard and it works fine... any suggestions on how to fix it? if not i'm gonna go at it with a sledgehammer...

I had that same Boot sector virus. i disabled the virus boot sector protection. now i don't know what happened, but it doesn't even try to install windows 98 anymore. it says that it's scanning the system registry....then it says that it cannot create a temporary directory. Also, it says that win98 has detected that drive c does no contain a valid FAT/FAT32 partition. how am i supposed to create a partition or whatever... I don't really know what that is... buti tried to create a partition on the drive from FDISK from the MS-DOS promt, but it doesn't work; i think it says "bad file name" Pleaaassse Hellp me!

Can't see the harddrive from dos either. Any help or comment would be appreciated. Send information to cateddy@hotmail.com or post and I will check back. Thanks

Boot sector viruses by Anonymous Ghost on October 12th, 2003 03:07:22 AM
To get rid of a boot sector virus, use this product called Invircible it was the only thing that helped me. It's not freeware but there is a shareware version you can download. I can't remeber the exact site but go to google and key it in. Make sure you download the windows version instead of the dos version. You can also use this product called Bios Manager for the ones the keep getting the boot sector write question message while trying to download Windows. To avoid these type of problems, it's best to download a rescue disk for your particular antivirus software. If you contract these type of viruses you can't boot your pc at all unless you're using Windows 95 or 98 (I think).

Re: Boot Sector Virus problem by Anonymous Ghost on December 07th, 2003 05:33:54 PM
Other options to save data... you might consider disconecting the drive.. clear bios ... setup and load another drive w minimal system install antivirus I like nodd32 currently.make a backup of the boot sector with any hard drive install utility. set nodd protections settings to max on everything scan type ALL file DEEP methods = signatures and heuristics checked. set to scan at boot. make a folder called oldCDRIVE or WHATEVER you want. get a program like "filesync" ready on the new drive. set to show all files even hidden system files. attach other drive use file sync program to sync old drive and the folder created. sync your drive to folder. shut down unplug old drive check new system for viri if ok and all data there. shut down unplug new drive. plug in old and wipe first 10 cylinders or so, clear bios AGAIN then wipe again full this time. you may want to trash your old floppys as their boot sector may be infected and you may just keep putting the virus back in.I like to use a bootable cd for fdisk etc. (cant get infected}. you can download self extracting boot disk at bootdisk.com. after drive is wiped fdisk + format backup (bootsector). then reset as second drive and sync your files back to the drive from folder, sut down reset drive as primary master and if all went well you should has your system back clean and as was. good luck, hope this helps.

Lods of these boot sector viruses has a bad tendency of corupting your bios, making it harder to fix. Solution:

1.Read your pc/mainboard manual, try find "how to reset CMOS", "using jumpers" or something like that.

2.You have to do it the manual way, this means opening your pc (make shure your warrenty has expired), and using "jumpers" on your mainboard.

3. Create a "cleen" boot disk (on another computer without virus)

4. In your BIOS, select the "boot order" (A, C, D) A first if you use a floppy boot disk , D if you use boot cd. save.

5. Boot with it.

6. Remove partition on your HD using fdisk.

6. Now try to reinstall windows.

hope it works... =) and remember, use protection! (and i am not just talking bout condoms)

Re: Boot Sector Virus problem by Anonymous Ghost on May 04th, 2004 09:56:19 AM
Solution:

Reformat hard drive. Install Redhat or Mandrake Linux.

They are as easy to use and learn as Windows XP and they are free. If anyone tells you that you have to be some sort of IT whiz kid to use it, they don't know what they're talking about or they sell Winders XP.

I usually suggest Mandrake for newbies.

If your system is hosed and you have to reload an OS, why not try one that doesn't have to be reinstalled every month because of security issues?

For Redhat: http://www.redhat.com/download/products.html

For Mandrake: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/ftp.php3

Just read the pages to figure out what you need to do. You don't have to join the mandrake club to download. Just say you are a member and download the iso files.

You will want to check your hardware to make sure it's compatible. If you have standard stuff, it will be.

Burn the iso files to CDs. Install the OS. Now you can do whatever without fighting these stupid things.

Re: Boot Sector Virus problem by Anonymous Ghost on June 04th, 2004 10:00:55 PM
I have Western Digital hard drives on two desktops. Both comps have, at times, not had boot virus/write protection enabled. I have a virus that repeatedly crashes these systems. This is all new hardware. I have had serious boot issues before, on Maxtor hard drives, and went thru the mill with the Maxtor company. They always wanted my drives for inspection, and replaced them with good rebuilts. I never complained... However, their programs for writing to zero to all sectors always seem to have issues, so I switched to Western Digital.
I do back ups on my files, for those I
wish to keep, and file them on-line, just in case. That way, there is a little better chance of salvage to them if I need copies, sans virus...
Anywho, I am writing to full zeroes across my hard drives, tonite, using the handy little utility floppy that came with my Western Digitals.
Indeed, it causes hick-ups in getting the hard drives reprogrammed, but I work thru that. Full formats can spook the drive for a bit, but they always come around. I just re-install the hard drive bios, and respect that one mobo wants W2k star floppies, while the other brand of mobo wants the full CD for W2k, by itself.
It is my ultimate answer to mofo viruses. Sam/Dallas

Re: Boot Sector Virus problem by Anonymous Ghost on June 08th, 2004 04:18:40 PM
Hi, I recently reformatted my hard drive, or rather have just deleted everything and am now ready to reinstall windows and all my data, but I have a boot virus preventing me from doing so. I cant run my useless Avg6 bootvirus scanner that never worked because it dosent exist on my C drive anymore, and I can't use a Norton anti-virus disk I have because I cant access the Windows I don't have installed to install it on my C drive and it won't run in DOS which I can actually get to with my Win98SE disk support. Are there any boot virus scanners that don't need installation, that will detect boot viruses, in DOS, for free, that perhaps I can burn to a cdr? Or am I just a hopeless case?
