exterior HD recovery

I had to get a restore disc and restore my computer. It went to my external HD and put a partision in it before I realized it went to the wrong HD. now my external HD only shows 3.19gig when it's a 160gig. I also have some files that are very important to me on that HD. Can you help me so I can get use of the whole 160gig and get the files thats on the other side of the partision.
P.S. It was a restore disc from Gateway. It is Windows XP media center. The disc makes a restore partision wich is what it did before I unpluged my external HD. yet the rest of the HD don't show just the 3.19 gig that was partisioned. The rest of the 160 gigs don't even show that it's there.

Re: exterior HD recovery

Getting that hard disc space back will not be a issue. The problem will be to get the data back. You can try using one of the data recovery softwares available around, but they are not very effective. If you try to create a new partition or resize the 3GB partition, you will not get the other data back.

You can use something like (free) Parted Magic, or (commercial) Partition Magic to resize the existing partition or create a new one to utilize the full 160GB capacity.

Re: exterior HD recovery

I really would like to get the files from the HD.

Re: exterior HD recovery

I have un external HD and it was working perfectly until yesterday that shows the light on, but no driver appears on my computer, how I can fix this problem I don't want to loose my data.

Re: exterior HD recovery

Tuco, you may be able to get the data back using a data recovery tool, but it will normally cost high. So you need to figure out the cost of recovering that data vs. the value of the data being recovered. Also, the data recovery tool may not be able to recover all data or only recover data partially which in some cases maybe useless.

Check if the drive is connected to the USB port properly and that the USB cable is not damaged.
