How to print from an iMac on a remote printer in a windows home network

I am not able to print a file from my iMac on a remote printer that is hooked up to my desktop pc. My home network consists of a desktop pc, iMac, laptop and a router. The pc and iMac are hooked up to the router with wires and the laptop is connected wirelessly. Can any body help me with this problem?

Thanks!

  1. On the Mac Make sure Windows File Sharing is enabled in the System Preferences Sharing pane.
  2. Open the Print Center and click "Add Printer" with the Option key held. The Option key may also be labeled Alt. Don’t confuse this with the Command (apple) key, or the Control (ctrl) key.
The Print Center may longer than usual as it gathers additional CUPS printing information.
  3. From the main drop down menu select the [Advanced] option. This option is visible at the bottom of the menu. The Advanced options menu will show after a short delay. Further sub-menus will appear depending on the options selected.
  4. In the Device drop down, Select: [Windows Printer via SAMBA]. (If you do not see the option, make sure you followed the step 1 properly).
  5. Give the Device a name. This will be the name that appears in the Print Center list of printers).
  6. Enter the printer's Device URI in the form:

    smb://username:password@workgroup/servername/sharedprinter
where username is your windows username, password is your windows password, workgroup is the Windows workgroup, server name is the Windows' machine name, sharedprinter is the printer share name.

In case this URI does not work, try:
    smb://username@servername/sharedprinter
    smb://username:password@servername/sharedprinter
    smb://username:password@full_domain_name/servername/sharedprinter
    smb://servername/sharedprinter

One of these should work depending upon your network configuration and security setup.

  7. Select the printer type.

  8. Select the printer driver.

  9. Once the printer is added, use it as you will, any normal printer :)
