I wish to know how can I backup a computer onto an external hard drive.

Recognize and select the data you wish to backup. Some examples
could be your financial data, personal digital photo collection, music,
videos etc.

Connect the external hard drive to the machine which has sufficient space to accomodate the data you wish to backup.

Copy the data/ folders that you wish to backup. Paste the folders inside your backup drive.

It might be a good idea to create a folder like backup_<date>_<reason> inside your backup drive and paste the backup data inside it.

Use the Windows Backup/ Restore wizard:

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup

Following the instructions in the wizard :)
